The Tigers have made it known to other teams that they are willing to trade Jacob Turner in a deal for the right pitcher, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. The Tigers have seemed willing to deal the right-hander in the past but this is the first indication that they are actively advertising Turner's availability.
Turner, 20, had a big fan in A's GM Billy Beane and was discussed as the centerpice for a deal that would have brought Gio Gonzalez to Detroit. Ultimately, Gonzalez was shipped to the Nationals as the Tigers were unwilling to part with prospects Nick Castellanos and Drew Smyly in addition to Turner.
It's hard to say who the "right pitcher" for Detroit might be, but the Tigers are one of the clubs who are in the mix for Cubs right-hander Matt Garza. Last season, Turner spent the bulk of the year with Double-A Erie where he turned in a 3.48 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 17 starts.
Jon Niese?
Righty.
Trade Turner, but trading Smyle would be a mistake!
I really think that Turner will be traded before the start of Spring Training. Bums me out for a selfish reason because I just bought one of his autographed cards. As long as we trade him for someone that can help I guess; though I really do like this kid.
Sure in a sample size at the MLB level he looked ok. Who knows what he can do with 31 starts.
I’d be the one losing here! I have his 2011 ST GU jersey signed, 2010 BP jersey signed, and 25 autographed cards/baseballs/photo’s and his debut ticket signed. So, Cubs fans if you’re interested let me know 🙂
Yes, sure. My name is eBay.
I just hope this doesn’t mean they are so locked into “win now” mode they do another Jair Jurrjens for Edgar Renteria type deal.
They learned from their mistakes.
You can have Jurrjens back for Turner (though Castellanos would be even better)…hehehehe
If they did, Detroit would have traded him for the likes of Gio Gonzalez
Dear Theo Epstein:
You now have 24 hours to trade Garza for a deal with Turner and Castellanos. Get on it.
Sincerely,
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SAVE THIS TEAM!
No way in hell you get both.
If he wants Castellanos the deal WILL NOT happen. Dombrowski said no to the A’s for Gio because they wanted Castellanos. He will not do the trade if Epstein wants him in the deal as well.
LOL, YOU will get Turner but not Castellanos also!
No way in hell you’re getting both….sorry.
Dont worry, we’re gonna gladly take Turner and Smyly instead
You will not get both!
You’re not getting Turner and Smyly either.
just watch..
Keep dreaming.
I’ve seen over pays before, but I think there is no way the Cubs can get Castellanos and Turner in the same deal. They could get Smyly and Turner but only if it was a 2 for 1 deal and nobody was added. I think the best the Cubs could do is a Turner, Oliver, and Paulino deal.
If they want them both, Starlin Castro is a Tiger
You are dreaming if you think you are getting both
if i’m the cubs, i offer to take inge off their hands if it’ll push the deal into garza for turner + smyly or castellanos. that’d be a $6MM reduction in payroll. hell, throw in dewitt and jeff baker in with garza too.
@Stewie you can have Turner and Oliver not Turner and Smyle or Castellanos.
You can have Brandon Inge for free right now if you’d like.
that’s the point, no one wants him, he’d be used as salary relief($5.5M salary + $500K buyout in 13) rather than an actual desirable piece. kind of like the baron davis to the cavs deal last year.
I think he was joking.
He’s got five-and-ten rights, and I doubt he’d be so gracious to accommodate the Tigers.
Burnett for Turner??? 🙂
No!
Gee can you throw in Porcello and all your other bust prospects too
Ummmm?
lol Turner is a bust?
Wish the Cubs had more busts like him.
dude obviously has no idea what he’s talking about
Inge only has a year left on his deal, the Tigers aren’t hard up for cash, they would probably just waive him if they are going to get rid of him. They did it with Shef and Robertson in the last year of their deals.
That’s what we said before they resigned him.
The fact that Detroit fans cannot spell Smyly correctly proves they have no clue about the farm system or the prospects in it, merely by name
The same person misspelled it twice. The fact that you have to call out someone for misspelling an uncommon name shows LOADS about your real life character.
Or they just don’t concern themselves with their farm system year in and year out becuase they have a respectable major league club and they arent picking wilidly away at their triple a club in order to claw to a .500 record at the end of the year
Most baseball fans who have any serious interest in their team usually knows at least a little bit about their top prospects, seeing as those are the guys said fan will be watching in 2-3 years.
Someone is lonely and has nothing to do tonight..
False dichotomy.
Now spell all the names in the Red Wings system.
Turner to the Padres, Rizzo to the Cubs, Garza to Tigers to start. Add a few pieces here and there to make it work.
Headley to the Tigers too for a big confusing 3 way deal?
Padres get B. Jackson and Turner.
Tigers get Headley and Garza.
Cubs get Rizzo, Smyly, and Castellanos.
That’s a decent start.
Bad trade for the Tigers moving their top 3 prospects for Garza and Headley (Headley is nothing special)
Headley is much better than he is given credit for. Get him out of Petco and he’s a potential all star. He’s also young and under control.
Yeah all 3 might be a little much. Take one of the Tigers top 3 out add a lesser prospect and the Padres kick in another prospect.
How many 3b have been more valuable than Headley over the last two years?
Not a trick question, but at the same time answering that will prove your point to lack merit. Assuming your a Tigers fan, and having looked up the production they got from 3b last year… of all people to criticize Headley, I’d think a Tigers fan would be one of the least likely. Headley is not a star, but a well above-average regular in his prime with three years of control left. He out hit Hunter Pence when you look at what each did away from their home parks, not to mention being a ton cheaper.
If you couldn’t tell from my pic, I’m not a Tigers fan but a Yankees fan. And 3B that were better than Headley the last two years
No perticular order:
Evan Longoria
Adrian Beltre
Alex Rodriguez
Aramis Ramirez
Pablo Sandoval
Michael Young
David Wright
you have to remember defense and affordability. Headley is a better defender than everyone except Longoria and probably on par with Beltre and the cheapest, plus look at his H/A splits. Its pretty legit.
A-Ram couldn’t play good defense at 3B if Brooks Robinson was standing behind him.
There’s no way to cut down an immortal, you look foolish, and don’t start with the steriods, 90% of the players were using something.
So he’s in the top third of MLB 3B? That’s pretty good.
HAHAHAHAHA u must be a padres fan
Headley & Rizzo nettng B. Jackson and Turner doesn’t seem out of line to me. I like Turner a lot more then Brett Jackson, whom I think is over-rated. For instance I wouldn’t trade Rizzo for Jackson strait up as Jackson doesn’t scream perfect fit.
For PETCO? A quick, gaps hitter? What?
Not Castellanos.
Take out Castellanos add Crosby or Oliver.
That trade would be good for all teams involved. I glad I read through all of the posts before I posted the exact same thing.
This just in: Oakland A’s trade entire team for Jacob Turner.
This just in: Tigers decline and hang up the phone.
If Tigers seriously want Garza, it would cost them Turner plus one other good prospect whether if it is Castellanos or Smyly and some low level lotto prospects. That is the price Cubs are seeking and if not interested then so be it. There are plenty of other teams interested in Garza’s service who just had top 10 WAR season last year with 2.95 FIP.
I’m good with trading Turner. I love the kid. I saw his MLB Debut. However, I like Drew Smyly a lot more. If anybody asks for Turner and either Smyly or Castellanos it should be and has been an immediate no. I think that Turner, Oliver, Avisail Garcia, and Bruce Rondon should be a haul that would entice Theo.
we wouldnt touch Garcia with a 10 foot pole.. hes horrendous! he struck out 12 times more than he walked
His eye does need work. However, ive seen him play multiple times. The kids got amazing talent. Scouts routinely compare him to Vlad.
Vlad didn’t fit the Theo mold either.
him and 25 other Latin kids who strikeout entirely way to much
I’m a Tiger fan, and I would be shocked if Garcia ever becomes a major league player. He had a .294 OBP and 11 home runs last year in High-A as a 20 year-old, and the K/BB ratio is what you would expect if you brought a 20 year-old up to the majors. At 20, he’s young, but he’s just about at the level he should be at. Also, the power still needs to develop. While he’s much more likely to develop power than make adequate improvements in plate discipline, that’s still another question mark. This is also a corner outfielder we’re talking about, not a shortstop or catcher. If he cut the ratio in half next year in high-a, and maintained that at each level into the major leagues, he would come up as a 24 year-old corner outfielder with Austin Jackson K/BB numbers.
Turner, Porcello, Rondon, and Danny Worth for Garza and Barney.
Hahaha… no.
ERA against Cleveland 4.81, ERA against Chicago 4.73, ERA against Minnesota 3.86, and ERA against Kansas City 3.83. Don’t know if hes worth it for Turner.
Whose to say Garza is that pitcher?
No player is untouchable if the right deal comes along.
theo and jed can easily let him prove him how much more he’s worth next season and let 2 extra wild card teams jump in the mix with wining fan bases. is the offer really going to be any worse than 2 major players and a couple lotto 20 year olds?? i can’t imagine something like that wouldn’t get it done today or at the deadline.
Detroit gets Jurrjens
Oakland gets Turner, Casey Crosby, 1 of McCann/Fields/Garcia, Pastornicky
Atlanta gets Michael Choice and Cliff Pennington
Hahaha. Awful deal for Detroit.
what is this i don’t even
Seems you opted not to wait until midnight to get bombed
New Year’s Eve stash, baby!
This makes too little sense to comment on! Who is Fields or Garcia and how are they exchangeable with McCann if I don’t know who they are?
Fields is Daniel Fields, Garcia is (I think) Avisail Garcia, and McCann must be James McCann, the catcher the Tigers drafted in the 2nd round this year.
But, as everyone else noted, this trade is brutal for the Tigers. They shouldn’t even be willing to give up Turner by himself for Jurrjens.
oakland fan?
So let me get this straight. Braves deal Jurrjens for a prospect and Pennington? And for some reason they would get the A’s involved and somehow the A’s would end up with all the best prospects? Wow. Just wow.
How about the Angels eat all of Pujols & Harens salary and trade them and Trout to Detroit for Victor Martinez and an actual tiger?
……..seriously….
i think throwing in an actual tiger nets detroit weaver as well
//How about the Angels eat all of Pujols & Harens salary and trade them and Trout to Detroit for Victor Martinez and an actual tiger?//
I’d do that deal in a heartbeat, even though the tiger has high upside.
//How about the Angels eat all of Pujols & Harens salary and trade them and Trout to Detroit for Victor Martinez and an actual tiger?//
I’d do that deal in a heartbeat, even though the tiger has high upside.
I will rain fire and death down upon all of MLBTR if that deal happens.
Obviously an A’s fan
If they can get Garza they should do it. I mean they are probably gonna bring up Turner too early and ruin him anyway aren’t they?
I see people say this about the Tigers a lot, but I don’t see why.
Who have the Tigers ruined by rushing?
Andrew Miller, Rick Porcello, and Andy Oliver say hello.
Come again?
Andrew Miller also got the Tigers Miguel Cabrera, so I’m perfectly happy with “ruining” him.
Still too early to tell on Porcello and Oliver, but keep pushing that narrative, bud.
Andrew Miller, Rick Porcello, and Andy Oliver say hello.
Check replies below.
id try to move Porcello before Turner.
paging Andrew Miller…you could argue they rushed Porcello and Oliver, Turner perhaps
Jury is still out on Turner and Oliver, as each has only had a cup of coffee (so it would be strange to already claim that rushing them ruined them). Porcello has been solid (2 WAR/yr) and is now a healthy 23 yr old w/ 500 MLB IP…not a bad spot to be in. Miller had a total of 37 games in the Tigers’ organization, so even if they rushed him, his failure to develop can’t be pinned on the Tigers.
I’ve also seen people mention Bonderman, but he developed into a very good pitcher before his arm blew out 6 years in.
It’s common to claim the Tigers ruin pitching prospects by rushing them, but the facts simply do not back up that assertion.
sorry, responding to rational
Theo knows by now what he can get for Garza, so he either keeps him like the Sox did with Danks or he trades him to the Tigers, Yanks, Marlins, or Sox.
A package around Turner is probably the best the Cubs will do, unless the Jays want to re-negotiate.
Theo and Jed have GOT to make DD include one of Smyly/Crosby and another high-end, fringe prospect farther away.
this will not happen.garza is not worth that much.
I find it interesting that Detroit fans find Matt Garza not worth 2 prospects yet they are willing to settle for the Joe Saunders, Paul Maholms, and Edwin Jacksons in the world. The difference will show up once they make the playoffs and then maybe a few of their more educated fans will understand the importance.
you idiots think detroit will trade Castellanos! and Turner for garza??? I mean come on they could of had gio for that!!! what hell is wrong with you idiots
Sounds to me like you’re insinuating Gio Gonzalez is a better pitcher than Matt Garza, but that just can’t be. I mean unless you think he’s more valuable because he has two more years of team control. Even then a team with a payroll like Detroit shouldn’t be affected by that.
Detroit’s payroll is big, but NOT necessarily flexible (i.e. Illitch won;t increase it substantially unless he has VERY good reason to do so). Acquiring either would involve a commitment to significantly raise the payroll in coming years (lots of young guys to keep around as well).
Supply and demand.
It’s not realistic to get Castellanos AND Turner, but the Cubs hold the best available starter on the market.
Someone will overpay.
Gio Gonzalez is a worse pitcher than Garza.
Four years of control vs two years is a big deal.
Turner, Iorge, Crosby and Garcia for Cain and Pill… Giants struggling to get 1 of their real good pitchers to resign means being proactive.
who is pill?
Brett Pill
Brett Pill
6’4 1st baseman trapped behind many Giants prospects — clobbered 25 HRs last year at AAA. Tigs have no use for 1st baseman/dh but could showcase him in ST and in early 2012 then spin him for something else. Of course the key get would be Cain; any other piece added by the Giants would be gravy.
i hope your trade comes true.i like it.
why garza? cubs wanna let him go……must be something wrong. No more than a number 4 for Detroit
Hesitant to deal top prospect, but if we can get Garza or Jurrjens for Turner and someone else not named Castellanos, then I think it would be a good trade for us. We’d be a all right-handed pitching staff, but a totally solid one!
