Some late night Tigers links…
- Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that general manager Dave Dombrowski's trip to see Yoenis Cespedes in the Dominican Republic is a strong sign of Detroit's interest in the Cuban defender. A team official told Morosi he couldn't remember Dombrowski ever taking a similar step before.
- Morosi adds that the Tigers checked in with the Rockies on Ian Stewart, but cautions that there have been no serious talks yet.
- Luis Ayala is a bullpen target as a candidate to fill a seventh inning role, tweets MLB.com's Jason Beck.
- We heard earlier tonight that Detroit may stay in-house to fill its fifth starter vacancy.

the tigers could really cement their hold on the central with a couple shrewd moves this offseason, but i don’t know if cespedes is the answer. the projections based on his cuban numbers were a little underwhelming
mistermonkey
Agreed. One thing I think a lot of Tigers fans forget is that they already have a pretty good hold on the Central, even if they do absolutely nothing. Obviously Dombrowski will do something, but this is team will contend as-is, so I’d prefer him to be conservative than pull a Dumbo of 2006/07 when he threw tons of money at the wrong people.

right you are. verlander-fister-scherzer is very nice and so is the front of that lineup. i’d have liked to see a dejesus type signing for the outfield and a trade for a 3B e.g. prado
mistermonkey
I’m hoping Prado or Maicer Izturis works out — either of those guys could split time at 2B and 3B and still give Inge and Santiago a reason to live.
But I get the sense that Dombrowski is cooking up something nuts.

As a Tigers fan, I’m not sure either Ian Stewart or Luis Ayala is a great fit for them. Ayala is not consistent enough getting right-handed batters out and Stewart doesn’t get on base or steal.
mistermonkey
I’d be okay with Stewart simply because he’s a left-handed hitting 3B and only 26. He can’t be worse than Inge (even though he actually was last year, and at Coors, to boot), and at the very least, the two could platoon for a season. But only if they can get Stewart for, like, Gerald Laird (kidding).

Yoenis Cespedes—DEFENDER OF CUBA!!!!!I think you meant defector. Or he’s defending Cuban policies while escaping to raise the coffers of the failing government through his on-field abilities.
funkytime
Have you seen his workout video? I wouldn’t put “Defender of Cuba” past him.

Or god…

How do you think Cepedes would do in the cold months of March/April in Detroit, and is he really 26? Personally I would rather throw Cepedes money at a starter and a reliever. I would rather have Izturis than Stewart. My main concern is 5th starter.
CheckYourFacts79
Sign Jeff Francis as the 5th starter. He’s still young but experienced. He’s a lefty. Then when 1 of your 5 goes on the DL because it will happen at some point. Plug Turner into that role.
Stewart and Izturis are no better than what we already have. Trade for Prado as your 2nd baseman. Have kelly/Santiago vs Righties at 3rd, Inge vs lefties. Go out and sign Kerry Wood for the pen. STAY AWAY FROM ARAMIS RAMIREZ!!!!!!
disgustedcubfan
Aramis Ramirez would be a perfect fit for Detroit. He would drive in 100 runs a year hitting behind V. Mart and Cabrera.
His problem is lack of effort and lapses in concentration, but I think Leyland could get that worked out with him.
CheckYourFacts79
Except his defence is brutal and Peralta already has no range to his right. His mid 20’s HR totals are inflated at HR friendly Wrigley. and he only plays hard when he wants.
MattCMoore
Exactly. If you are a tigers fan you probly dont want Ramirez at all. We need to boost the team speed on the bases not bring in another semi truck…
GOTIGERS24
sign cespedes, trade for polanco for 2nd, daniel murphy for 3rd, trade delmon young for guthries, sign dotel, and thats a very successful off season
MattCMoore
I kinda like the idea of trading for Murphy to play 3rd. If they could get him for Dirks and mabe Oliver that would be great.
