TUESDAY, 11:19am: In reference to Murphy, a Mets official told ESPNNewYork's Adam Rubin, "Some players are more valuable to us than other clubs."
MONDAY, 2:19pm: The Tigers, Blue Jays, and Padres inquired on Mets infielder Daniel Murphy, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman adds that the Mets like the Tigers' Andy Dirks as a potential center field alternative to Angel Pagan.
Murphy, 26, hit .320/.362/.448 in 423 plate appearances while playing first base, second base, and third base this year.
101andcounting
Murphy is due to regress considerably, right? I never thought of him as a potential .300/.350/.450 hitter
Brian Mastro
no hes a great hitter 1 problem is he doesnt have a position
adropofvenom
He has a position, two of them in fact. He’s perfectly fine defensively as either a 1B or a 3B (One would assume any team interested in him would be as a 3B), the problem is he’s blocked at those positions on the Mets.
Brian Mastro
hes barely a passable feilder no matter where you put him hes best at 1st and 3rd but still not good but hes a great hitter
adropofvenom
His Career UZR/150 at 3rd (albeit small sample size) is 6.3, and it’s 9.3 at 1st base in a much larger sample (and the eyeball test more then backs that up), he’s better then barely passable. His UZR is actually pretty decent at 2nd too (another small sample size), but I wouldn’t recommend playing him there since he’s gotten hurt there twice on takeout slides in 2 years. The point is though, he’s more then adequate at either corner infield position. His poor defensive reputation is largely because of the failed OF experiment. But he can play the INF just fine.
mookie_and_doc
He plays no position well. He was only decent at 1b in a small sample of games this season before the injury, and is a total disaster everywhere else. Either way, his bat only plays as a middle IF so his value as an everyday big-leaguer is severely limited.
Aidan Maslow
Murphy has always been projected as someone that makes a lot of contact and should hit for high average. The only problem is that the only position he seems at home at is 3B. His problem is his fielding not his hitting.
Lastings
Of course the Mets like Andy Dirks, he only hit three home runs in three games against them this year.
Brian Mastro
NO you cannot take him too
Bluebirdz 2
It seems like mets fans have a hard time realizing they need to rebuild
Brian Mastro
murphy is part of the rebuilding
boraswannabe
He’d be part of the rebuild if Wright was traded.
thejackhammer
That would be great if the Tigers could turn Dirks into Murphy. It might require a couple more low minor prospects but I love the idea of this trade.
adropofvenom
It should take a lot more then a “couple low minor prospects” to make a Dirks for Murphy trade…..as in Dirks would be the 2nd or 3rd best player in that package.
williswinning
No, Dirks is pretty good. He would have to be the main piece. Not many CF’s that can hit, run and Dive for balls. He’s high energy with a very good bat.
j6takish
Although Murphy is a lock to regress a little bit, if Andy Dirks gets it done I do this in a heartbeat. Dirks is great in the corners, passable in center, he can steal bases and he has some power…but he can’t make consistent enough contact or walk enough to be given a starting job.
funkytime
Dirks is more of a contact hitter than a power guy. Regularly hit around .300 in the minors.
I think he can grow into a guy that can hit .270-.280 with 15 HRs a year. Which would be good production in CF, but not so much in the corners. And since CF is taken in Detroit, that makes him expendable.
verlander
I’d do this in a heartbeat.
mmwatkin
Dirks & parts for Murphy? Why isn’t this done already?
Paul Shailor
Tigers please trade dirks to get this done. We have enough utility OF’s. He could start at second!
weaselpuppy
Done. Lefty platoon partner for Inge…cheap…under control until Castellanos is ready? plus can play multi spots like Jimmy Smokes loves? Dirks and a B- pitching prospect like Burgos?…done done done
weaselpuppy
Tigers have lots of catching in the minors…want Brantley instead of Burgos? fine. No on Crosby and lol on Smyly…Oliver I’d be fine with….
MattCMoore
Lol @ Jimmy Smokes..
Freddie Morales
Mets are not going to trade murphy for a 4th or 5th string of. Only way mets are going to trade murphy is if they get a young catcher in return or some good young pitching. No cf on the trade market is worth more than murphy.
Pat Cronin
no reason for Mets to deal him….whose gonna play 2B? Havens?
Joveoak
Justin Turner says hi.
WonderboyRooney10
Justin Turner’s below .700 OPS says hi
Joveoak
He asked who’s gonna play second not who’s gonna play all-star level 2B.
WonderboyRooney10
Thats fair. Im just saying, 500+ AB’s for Turner will be ugly. Might as well pick Brad Emaus back up
inleylandwetrust
I’d love to do that. Nice bat to plug in at 2nd or 3rd and can field his position too.
johnsmith4
Murphy’s cumulative WAR for the past 3 years is 4.4 vs Lind 3.4 Encarnacion 3.1 & Snider 1.4….Obviously a must have player for the Jays.
Aidan Maslow
I would not trade Murphy. Even if we have to suffer through an above average number of bad plays at second, his bat is too good to not have in the lineup. We would never get anything close to his true value in trade. Plus, I would rather have Pagan than Dirks.
You do not trade away above .300 hitters for scraps! Dirks is not projectable as an everyday centerfielder. Murphy projects as an all-star if he could find a position.
funkytime
This deal lines up so well with the Tigers needs. They have too many outfielders and not enough infielders. I like Dirks, but I’d love to see this deal go down.
ilikeike29
Murphy for Dirks + Crosby/Oliver/Smyly
TheBigNice
Not Smyly. But the other two, fine.
funkytime
I think that’d be a bit much. Oliver was the Tigers’ 3rd highest rated prospect before last season. And Smyly has likely passed him now.
Dirks and a couple mid level prospects could work out well for both teams.
MattCMoore
Yea, check out Smylys #s. He was sick. Nearly unhitable.
Mickey Koke
I am wondering if the Padres could dump most of Hudson’s contract to acquire Murphy, along with adding Will Venable?
The Padres could platoon Murphy at second with Logan Forsythe. They could also use Murphy if they dealt Headley until Gyorko is ready.
padresfuture
If the Padres are truly interested in Murphy, I would have to wonder if they are then serious about trading Headley to a team like the A’s for Bailey. Would not be my favorite move as I think the Padres should get a little bit more for Headley. I wonder what the asking price on Murphy would be? You would think pretty high right now given the Mets are going to lose Reyes.
GasLampGuru
I’ve always liked Murphy, and I believe his line drive swing would play well in San Diego. He’d hit a ton of doubles in that park. Considering he plays half his games in Citi Field, I can’t help but think he wouldn’t be dramatically effected by Pet Cos dimensions.
Ohhhplease
Bartlett for Murphy? Add in some minor parts to make it happen?
padreshobo
I don’t know what Murphy makes, but I wondered the same thing. O-Dog for Murphy and Padres eat cash? Please someone take O-Dog away from us.
smokinjays
Looks great to the Jays. And guess who’s got a ton of minor league catching and pitching depth. These two teams should be able to get something done.
M@
dave d please dont F this up!
M@
have the tigers given up on trying to trade for Izturis?
MattCMoore
I hope so.
Tim Johnson 2
Murphy for Dirks + Crosby/Oliver/Smyly- LOL!
Mets fans, why don’t you ask for Dirks and Jacob Turner? Or maybe Nick Castellanos. Oh, let’s go whole hog and ask for Dirks, Miggy Cabrera, Justin Verlander, and the statue of Al Kaline.
Get real about your team, Mets fans- Murphy is a useful utility player who could help a good team, but he’s trade bait for a prospect on a rebuilding club- which you now officially are with Reyes leaving. Murphy is worth a mid-level prospect along the lines of an Andy Dirks, but nothing more.
Sylvan
Dirks is a pretty weak “mid-level” prospect. He’s only a few months younger than Murphy and offers the hope that he will maybe someday learn to hit major league pitching and grow up to be a Murphy-like hitter? Wow, what a deal!
diehardmets
NO, NO, NO! In the time he’s gotten, all this kid has done is hit. It makes no sense to trade him, especially for a sub par return. Let him play at 2B and see what happens. He won’t bring back enough in a trade, so they might as well stick with him and see what he can do.
xhausted_grad
andy dirks? r u serious alderson? how much more crappy of a day can you get
GOTIGERS24
The Tiger should bring in Murphy to play 3rd, there are rumors that polanco could be traded, so the Tigers should trade for him to play 2nd, Sign Cespedes when he hits the market, then try to trade delmon young for Jeremy Guthrie, sign Dotel for the 7th innings, that would be a VERY successful offseason for the Tigers. Restore the Roar Dombrowski.
Freddie Morales
If mets were to deal murphy, i could see a deal with the twins with murphy, parnell, and a prospect for liriano. Twins are down on liriano and hes a free agent at end of the year, they probably will not re-sign him. why not get a young bat who can play 1st, 3B, and dh for a team thats about to lose kubel and cuddyer.
verlander
Every time a Tigers fan says the Tigers should give up anything for Placido Polanco, an angel gets set on fire.
