Yesterday the Royals were linked to Oakland's Gio Gonzalez and free agent Carlos Guillen, and it was also suggested they'd listen on relievers Joakim Soria and Greg Holland. The latest on the team:
- The Royals seek a right-handed alternative to play third base and give Mike Moustakas an occasional break, GM Dayton Moore told Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. Casey Blake and Kevin Kouzmanoff are a couple of free agents who could fit the bill, in my opinion.
- The Royals have a full 40-man roster, so they'd have to free up a spot to make a Rule 5 pick on Thursday.
- The Royals tried for Derek Lowe before the Braves traded him to the Indians.
- Manager Ned Yost told Dutton the Royals would like to add a situational lefty to serve as an alternative to Tim Collins. Check out the free agent lefty relievers here.
- Moore seemed to acknowledge interest in Guillen, but noted, "I think there are going to be quite a few players like that around in January if we want to supplement our team."
- Dutton confirmed the Royals' interest in Gonzalez with a source, though they currently don't like the Athletics' asking price of multiple impact prospects.
- Regarding unfounded lobby rumors yesterday, Moore commented to reporters including MLB.com's Dick Kaegel, "I'd like to keep Wil Myers' name out of the paper as much as possible. Wil Myers is a young, talented player. He had a tremendous Arizona Fall League. We live with him every day. We love him and he's a big part of our future. But he's a Double-A player. He's going to produce at his own natural rate. We're not going to put unrealistic expectations on him. What other cliche do you want?"
NL_East_Rivalry
The Royals need to save up some money and just buy the Braves already
Goose That's Loose
Sadly it seems every dollar the Royals save they never spend it. If they actually saved it, they could probably have a $120 million salary for a couple years.

I just like typing GMDM

“What other cliche do you want?” Sweet xD

I wonder what KC offered for Lowe because the Tribe gave little in the way of money and prospects. Maybe Wren and Atlanta’s FO are a little creeped out with the fact that the Royals are basically trying to be the Gwinnett Braves.
kcgregory
Olney indicating any Gio or Cahill deal would have to have Moustakas, Hosmer, or Myers for the A’s to consider. There goes that rumor. Not a fit for the Royals. Move on.
WonderboyRooney10
For Gonzalez i can see including Moustakas or Myers but no way Trevor Cahill. Pass on the soft tosser
Revive85
Agreed. No way we send Mous, Hosmer, or Myers packing this offseason. Absolutely no way. If the A’s won’t take a couple B+ prospects (because we have tons of those) then a deal just doesn’t fit.
kcgregory
I do think Gio is ‘worth’ an A prospect + two other good pieces, but that’s just not a fit for us at this point.
Revive85
Gio is a great young pitcher but NO WAY is he worth a Hosmer, Mous, Myers (your A type player) + TWO other good pieces.
Absolutely not.
I still think Eibner +Monty + Colon for Gio is a fair deal for both sides.
kcgregory
I’m kind of in agreement, perhaps I just don’t know the grades. I’d consider a top 5 or so prospect in the Royals system an A. Montgomery+ would be fine, though I think you’re actually suggesting too much there.
john
Royals will not get Gio unless they pay the price which I don ‘t see happening. The Royals took to long to be in this position to gamble. They are still a few starters short of being a good team so 1 ace will not put them over the top.
jpkinney7
One Ace for the next Four Years (Guaranteed). Gio would be part of the staff from 2012 – 2015, and you could probably sign him to a 4-Year Deal + Option year(s). Seems like the Royals are meant to contend from 2013 – 2017. Gio would be a great piece for that particular run.
nictonjr
He’s guaranteed to be an ‘ace’ for the next 4 years??
jpkinney7
No, he’s guaranteed to be in KC’s rotation for the next 4 years. I don’t think Gio is a true ace. He’s a great #2 and is still improving.
Mikey Roederer
Why would the Royals be interested in Guillen…they are just finally turning the ship around from stupid moves like that. I really hope they just find another #3 pitcher and call it good…I would hate to see them screw up this close to finally contending again
kcpaul
I think it would be a good move. Guillen would be a great utility player who could spell players at several positions. It would also give us some veteran leadership since that roll currently goes to Francouer who is only 27.
twentyfivemanroster
Dude, that wouldn’t be a stupid move at all. kcpaul is correct, Guillen would be a great utility player and provide solid veteran leadership.
Rick 24
This is not a match with the A’s asking price.
Revive85
I think Buster forgot about how loaded KC’s system actually is. I’d think 2 B+ prospects and a B type prospect would be more than enough to get a deal finished for Gio.
Throw out Colon+Monty+another and see what happens. If the A’s truly won’t make a deal without Hosmer, Mous, or Myers then a deal definitely won’t get done.
Royals Fan
Moose and Hosmer aren’t going anywhere. But if we are going to land a stud like Gio or Shields, we are going to have to trade Myers. I’ll take an #1 starter for 4 years over the lottery ticket of Myers any day. Granted Myers is supposed to be a stud, but so was Brandon Wood, Pedro Alvarez, Smoak etc, etc……..He’s not guaranteed to be anything. You know what you are getting with Gio or Shields. I’m personally more excited about Cuthbert……
KC_Chris
Which means you could move Moustakas
Royals Fan
I think Cuthbert ends up in one of the OF corners. Plus, in trading Moose you run the risk of pissing off Hosmer. Those guys want to build something together long term.
Marky
I think Hosmer has less value than Moose, 1B’s aren’t exactly difficult to find.
Royals Fan
I think you are incredible wrong. Hosmer has gold glove caliber defense that hits for power and average. I wouldn’t be suprised if he’s an All Star next year already. Moose has power and….and….and….
He didn’t really show that much last year either. I hope it develops but I think when it’s all said and done, Hosmer has the much more successful career.
George Pattison
KC’s not trading Moose or Hosmer. Period. The guy in question is Myers…and only if we can get a Gio Gonzalez or James Shields in return. I think the Royals are only an ace away from contention.
Otis26
On the other hand, 1B’s with All Star potential like Hosmer are NOT easy to find.
Goose That's Loose
Aren’t exactly difficult to find? The Royals haven’t had a quality 1b since the early 2000s when Sweeney was healthy.
twentyfivemanroster
You don’t trade Myers for 1 season of Shields, that’s just plain dumb.
That being said, I think the ONLY way the Royals trade Myers, whether in a package deal or not, is for a true ace and neither Shields nor Gio is a true ace.
Please stop referring to busts like Brandon Wood, etc when talking about Myers or any prospects. That is true with ANY prospects, but I would also state that Myers and those you mention are totally different any way. For one, Myers, when healthy, has hit well in a pitcher friendly league. Brandon Wood played in the California League, notorious hitters league.
George Pattison
I don’t think Myers for Gio is that outrageous. Isn’t Gio under control for 4 more years? Seems like a solid move to me…
twentyfivemanroster
except Gio is not an ace and you don’t trade one of baseballs best prospects for a #2 pitcher
Marky
Surprise surprise that the A’s want multiple impact prospects for a young star!
Yeah they should totally just take all the overrated/old/B-grade KC prospects instead of trying to move their impact arm for an impact bat. Sure, if KC is that accustomed to losing that they think Sanchez/Chen/Hochevar is a “big 3” then they are even more delusional than ever. Gio MAKES that team. KC has nothing even close to him in the minors, and I think most if not all teams would rather have him than to overpay for Wilson or Darvish.
I know this “stocking prospects” thing is new to them, but theyre actually supposed to trade the stockpile for players that they need more. KC needs Gio more than they do Myers, or even Hosmer for that matter (1B’s arent that hard to find).
George Pattison
1B’s might not be hard to find, but 22-year-old 1B’s under team control for 6 years are.
Otis26
The Royals have nothing even close to him in the minors? You wouldn’t take Hosmer? Ok…your entire post is officially declared inane.
George Pattison
Otis, I think he’s suggesting that KC doesn’t have an arm close to Gio in the minors which is probably accurate. No way KC needs Gio more than Hosmer though.
BetweenNames
Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery, John Lamb and Chris Dwyer out of those four guys I think at least one one of them will be pretty good…
lefty177
Everybody says about the Royals rotation this year, what level is Montgomery going to be at this year? out of everyone that’s talking about their rotation, i haven’t heard his name come up
Goose That's Loose
AAA to start the year. I’m more curious about Duffy.
