11:45am: Talks between the A's and D'Backs have advanced but aren't close to completion, tweets Olney. He reiterates that Bauer is a player of interest to Oakland.
THURSDAY, 8:49am: The A's and D'Backs have discussed the names of many prospects as a possible return for Cahill, even including Trevor Bauer, reports ESPN's Buster Olney. Bauer, I should note, can't even be included in a deal as a player to be named later until late January.
WEDNESDAY, 1:49pm: Add Athletics righty Trevor Cahill to the list of pitchers under pursuit by the Diamondbacks, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. He says they'd need to surrender Tyler Skaggs for Gio Gonzalez, but not for Cahill. Cahill, 23, is signed through 2015 with club options on the '16 and '17 seasons.
In November, Rosenthal reported the A's were willing to listen to trade offers for any player other than Jemile Weeks.

How is Kuroda involved in this article?
BrandonDbacks
Because the Dbacks are targeting him..
Marky
Do the Diamondbacks have another Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson and Chris Carter available to offer? If no, then move along, nothing to see here…
rfffr
yes but they won’t. Towers is smarter than that
BrandonDbacks
Dbacks would prob give up Skaggs and a lower level prospect at the most for Gio. Nothing more, dream on bud.
snaketrain
praise satan that josh byrnes isn’t pulling the trigger anymore.
Marky
Its not my dream, its AZ who are dreaming of him, not the other way around. A’s fans either want a massive haul for him or to just keep him.

tyler skaggs, matt davidson/bobby bochering, chris owings, aj pollock, and patrick corbin could be a solid base to get trade talks started
BrandonDbacks
Hell to the no. Dbacks aren’t that stupid.
jay the A
Dan Haren disagrees.

I have to admit.. This post actually made me Chuckle.. A LOT!! Why not throw in Bauer too!! Would hate to stall talks!!
muskyfish
I love when people act like prospects stand alone on their perceived value and are not viewed as business assets. Nobody is making either team do a trade, but if you want a Gio or Cahill, you are going to have to give up one of the top young arms and a real good bat. Skaggs becomes expendable to get Gio, and Parker becomes expendable if you get Trevor. The other top pitchers would have to be PTNL, so I think they would be safe at this juncture. Davidson or Borchering fits the A’s well, whereas they may not even have a position in Arizona. I don’t think the last three names make sense do to team needs. But I could see a good reliever changing hands and allowing Parra to be brought into the deal in some nature. Both teams make out in such a case, and that is what is important.
Chris
Musky.. Read the above post I replied to! The guy asked for basically 80% of the Dbacks farm system! So I’m not acting like prospects stand alone. I just laugh at people who have outrageous demands as a Couch GM.
muskyfish
I do apologize. Upon first reading I thought it was the inclusion of one of the top-shelf arms that had you worked up, instead of the actual grouping. I think I took the Bauer comment the wrong way and it threw me off.
Marky
Looks like they are talking about Bauer! Come to san-jo babies….
Snoochies8
was just about to post the same thing!

you forgot Uggla. We put him in the R5 draft and he was an AS the next season <_<
rfffr
If they can cahill for maybe Pollock, borchering and holmberg they should do it
BrandonDbacks
Too much. Cahill isn’t that good, check out his home/ road splits.
Wayne Bainbridge
plus if you really look at cahill, i have seen him have 105 piches in the 5th inning alot as well
BeenThereDoneIt
Can you say FIRE SALE?!?
Marky
All of these teams are coming to Beane, not the other way around.
mjnord
No because they don’t need to trade anyone they are just listening to offers.
BrandonDbacks
I’m not to sure about Cahill.. he would be easier than Gio to get obviously, but I’d rather have Hiroki or Gio than Trevor.
Chris
Yanks need to get in this cahill thing. this is where id send romine, betances or banuellos with heathcott and nunez wont happen but sounds good lol
vtadave
That’s why you’re not a GM, sorry. Banuelos alone is worth more than Cahill.
Marky
That’s not even close to being true. Please don’t overrate your prospects, the only player who deserves an untouchable tag is Bryce Harper, everyone else can be attained.
jay the A
Cahill = 23 yr old All Star MLB pitcher.
Banuelos = never pitched a major league inning in his life, and couldn’t crack a 4.0 ERA in AAA last year.
Any more brilliant analyses?
vtadave
I would give you a load of brilliant analysis, but it would likely go right over your head.
I will say that Banuelos reached AAA as a 20 year-old and that using a seven-start sample is ridiculous.
FamousGrouse
Cahill pitched in 178 innings in MLB at 21. Banuelos is not going to pitch 178 innings in MLB next year. Cahill’s pitchfx is pretty impressive, the guy has tons of movement-in fact too much movement-on his stuff.
Banuelos needs more time in the minors to improve his control.
Marky
LOL at “Banuelos reaching AAA as a 20 year old”! Whoop de doo, Cahill was in a big league rotation at 21 and an all star at 22. Cahill is infinitely more valuable than a prospect, and he’s locked up on a team friendly contract for avery long time with 2 club options.
Ready to admit you said something silly yet?
michael l
The Yankees won’t trade Banuelos for Gio let alone Cahill. Cahill pitched 178 innings because he was in Oakland, not knocking his talent. Banuelos would be in the A’s rotation now because they are rebuilding
Miguel Arias
Cahill with his 4.00 FIP?
Chris

Rather have Gio but i wouldn’t wanna part with Skaggs.. no way.
BrandonDbacks
I doubt they trade Skaggs since he was the centerpiece of the Haren deal. I could see Parker being dangled with Corbin in a potential trade though.
J.j. Miller
then A’s would gladly hold onto gio, even though theyd like to rebuild, they arent forced to trade him.
bigpat
I still like Cahill a lot, not as an ace but a quality #3 or so. Can’t afford to give the farm for him though. He doesn’t have the ace quality like Gio, but I’d take him on my team anyday.
muskyfish
Cahill is much better than a number three…. Is he a clear-cut ace? No, not yet. But young ground ball pitchers often battle inconsistency.
Marky
There arent many 22 year old clear-cut aces in MLB history, Cahill will most likely get there and be a beast when he’s about 27-28.
TheWoodyD
Which, ideally, is around when a new A’s stadium would be opening. I’d rather they have a beast of a pitcher when they move to SJ, than a still-developing 23-year old pitcher again…
Gio, on the other hand, can nab some nice prospects that could have a year or two in the majors by the time the new park is ready.
Randy
thank you why would they trade cahill its stupid he should fit in the plans for the new staduim 23 under team control until 2017 smh
alxn
Bauer is the type of player Beane dreams of
Jon Stark
Bauer is the type of player I dream of.
J.j. Miller
Cahill’s demise is ovverrated, he’s onlyt 23. he had a mid 3’d era in late july…terrible august, then got back on track in september. I guarantee 95 % of teams in mlb would take him in their rotation.
If A’s stadium situation wasnt so screwed up they wouldnt consider trading bailey/gio/cahill
Marky
Well they kind of are listening to these offers in hopes someone gives them a big haul so they can aim to have a good team in 3 years when the new park opens up. Thats the hope, at least.
inleylandwetrust
Cahill is just not as good as his ’09 era suggested. He’s still a solid pitcher, but he’s not an ace by any means. It’s not that strange to see that his era jumped up to where his peripherals suggested it would be. Which is in the 3.9-4.2 range.

Did the new CBA change when a drafted player can be traded? If I remember correctly, under the old rules a drafted player couldn’t be traded until a year after he signed. Wouldn’t that make Bauer untradeable until late July 2012?
Marky
Janruary 2012 he can be traded.
BaseballWizard
Right. I saw what was written. I wondered why he can be traded in January.
EDIT – They edited the original post. He can’t be actually traded until later, but he can’t even be included as a PTBNL until January.
Marky
wow. so if anything happens its going to be like feb until things are announced?
BaseballWizard
That’s why I don’t think anything will happen. Unless the CBA has changed the rules on trading drafted players, they can’t be traded until a year from signing. Even if you can announce a PTBNL in late January, that means that Bauer couldn’t change hands until late July. No team is going to let a prospect either play for their old team over half a season, or sit out half a season waiting to be traded.
DBax31
Please don’t trade Bauer
rfffr
i imagine the bauer thing was instigated by Beane. Kevin probably laughed hysterically.
kcgregory
Cahill has a better contract and will come cheaper than Gio? I’d like to see the Royals get in the mix if that’s the case.
Hoosierdaddy92
I’d love the Tigers to go after Jemile Weeks, but of course he’s the only player the A’s won’t trade. Would Jacob Turner and Austin Jackson plus a PTBNL be a reasonable trade for Jemile Weeks and Gio Gonzalez? AJax is expendable on the condition that it seems likely the Tigers will get Cespedes, as they are reportedly going all-in for him. When Illytch really wants a player, he usually gets him.
Tigers potential lineup
2b) Weeks
RF) Boesch
CF/LF) Cespedes/Young
1b) MCab
DH) VMart
LF/CF) Young/Cespedes
C) Avila
SS) Peralta
3b) Inge/Kelly
P) Verlander
P) Gio Gonzalez
P) Fister
P) Scherzer
P) Porcello/Smyly
Matt
No, it wouldn’t be near enough for those two. The Tiger’s entire farm would have to be gutted, especially because the A’s don’t want jackson.
chee1rs
Cahill’s got a ton of upside and salary friendly provisions
Gator4444
4+ ERA and they want Bauer? Good luck…
