Angels Still Exploring Relief Options

By Mike Axisa | December 21, 2011 at 7:12pm CDT

The LaTroy Hawkins signing got understandably overshadowed during the winter meetings, but the Angels are still exploring bullpen options according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. Gonzalez says they've been in touch with Darren Oliver's representatives and had scouts watch Joel Zumaya's recent showcase.

The Halos have Jordan Walden, Scott Downs, Hisanori Takahashi, and Hawkins slated for the bullpen at the moment, plus they have Kevin Jepsen, Rich Thompson, Bobby Cassevah, and Jerome Williams on their 40-man roster as well. Gonzalez says the Angels can't afford Francisco Cordero, and he adds that GM Jerry Dipoto has not reached out to free agents Luis Ayala and Dan Wheeler either.

just like earlier this winter when they were quoted they only had 20 million to spend this entire off season right?

The alleged “20 million” to spend was pure speculation, based on where the payroll currently stood versus what the payroll was last year.

Do you really think they’ll spend another $50M+ on top of the $324M+ they’ve already spent?

It will probably take nearly a Papelbon deal to get “Madson”. He won’t be signed for just 2 years. Aside from that, I don’t see the Angels having the money to get another big name.

Royals fans have been following along a guy who claims he broke the Pujols, Cuddyer and Furcal signings and has multiple league sources inside baseball for info…

claims the Royals and Angels have been progressing on a trade of Soria to Anaheim. Supposedly, the Royals asked for Garrett Richard, and Angels said no…so now, supposedly the Royals are working out a package centered around John Hellweg…

Please keep in mind, I take any news or rumors not found on this site with a grain of salt and am not endorsing the info…but this guy is developing a pretty big following among Royals fans..so I won’t mention him in case he’s a hack. but…it has our attention.

Yeah Piodeportes1.  Angels fans were on him before the Pujols signing.  He has insider info, he’s just got a happy trigger finger.  Reports EVERYTHING he hears just in case any of it is right.  You’ve gotta sift through the dirt to find gold.  He doesn’t bother with that.

Angels Still Exploring Relief Options… Maybe Dipoto and Moreno should be advised first on…. ” How do you spell relief?” “R-O-L-A-I-D-S”. Then maybe Relief can occur! Plus, Pujols could become a closer in the 9th, Trumbo comes in to play 1st base. Hey you gotta make sure you get your monies worth from the guy! Otherwise, Flatulence or Indigestion might occur and the fans might start to Boo!

How about Morales for Eric O’Flaherty and Eric Hinske?

Braves can afford to lose a Bullpen piece.

I know it’s not a perfect fit but I think Morales might still be able to play some OF/1B.  Hinske’s kinda a cheap throw-in bench bat/DH type for you guys if you need it, not valueless though.  I see Morales at worst filling Hinske’s role on the Braves if he’s incapable of taking LF regularly.

I’d offer Jurrjens and Venters for Trout but I wouldn’t expect that to be accepted.

2 years of injury aside, you’re heavily underestimating Morales’ worth.

Multiple reports from reporters and players (Bourjos works out at the same complex as Morales) indicate that he resembles the player who finished 5th in the 2009 MVP voting.

I know it’s fun to propose beneficial trades for your team, but I’m afraid this one isn’t close.

the injury is why I’d be suggesting it, combined with Pujols signing really reducing the options of where to play him.

EOF is a very good reliever who last year showed potential to possibly be a closer.  The only downside would be 1 year of team control.  I’d actually consider Venters as an option if Morales was a better fit.

Yeah, he’s essentially relegated to the DH spot now, which also includes Trumbo and Abreu as candidates.

It really depends how things play out; whether or not Trumbo is able to transition to 3rd base in time (that experiment was supposed to take place during winter ball but he sustained an injury).

If Trumbo can play third, Morales is the obvious choice to assume the DH spot and Abreu is a quality, albeit expensive 4th outfielder.

I suppose I’m hypothetically protective of Morales since I’m an Angels fan, but I just think selling low on a guy who exceeded 30HR/100RBI 2 seasons ago isn’t advisable.

Not that your Bravos would ever consider this proposal considering the presence of Freeman, but I’d ask for one of your top SP prospects (vizcaino, teheran, minor, delgado) and Venters, and quite possibly more if Morales is fully healed.

Of course this is why I’m not a GM =)

Come to think of it, that’s a big reason I”m glad you guys got Pujols- I thought if Freeman decided to leave in 5 years, it would be for the Angels (Freeman and Hanson I believe grew up Angels fans)

I’d think about moving Freeman to LF if the right 1B was avaliable.

Now, if you guys suggested a package for Hanson around Morales, I’d listen.  My reasoning is I think Hanson is a bigger injury risk then JJ, and a bigger headache, though a more talented pitcher, and one who carries higher trade value.  I think JJ would sign long-term with the Braves.  (same reason I’d only consider a special package for getting rid of Prado)

I understand your overprotectiveness given what happens and Morales’s potential.  I’m really hoping he bounces back.  I saw in him a potentially elite bat.

Don’t the Angels have other good DH options?

That said, I really wish the NL had a DH sometimes, it would have really helped the last couple of years protecting Chipper and McCann from wear and tear.

I’d do John Hellweg and Trevor Bell for Joakim Soria.  Royals get a future #2/3 SP/CL and a 5th SP/long reliever, both of which would be under team control for several year.  Angels get 3 years of Soria at 8 million per.
