The Yankees are nearing a one-year deal with Freddy Garcia, according to David Waldstein of the New York Times (on Twitter). The Yankees offered the right-hander arbitration earlier tonight.
Garcia, 35, signed a minor league deal in February and delivered a surprisingly strong 3.62 ERA in 146 2/3 innings. The 13-year veteran posted 5.9 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 36.4% ground ball rate for the Yankees, spending part of August on the disabled list with an index finger injury.
Though the Yankees have locked up C.C. Sabathia, their search for starting pitching continues. Sabathia and Garcia will join A.J. Burnett, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes in the team's projected 2012 rotation.

Perfect, cant imagine the salary being high, good move.

First Bruce Chen to the Royals and now Freddy Garcia back with the Yanks… now we’re cooking! I might actually get a few right for the contest! Stupid Phillies… stupid Papelbon… ! 😉
CAD_Monkey
My strategy of picking whatever team the player ended the season with is REALLY paying off now!

I love posts that end with “Stupid Papelbon!” — I’ve been shouting this at my television on and off for six years.

OH ME OH MY!

Garcia should pull a Derek Jeter and demand 16M for a one-year contract, with an option year at 25M. Hey, if they want to flush money down the drain for other old guys, why not him. lol.
East Coast Bias
That… was not funny at all.

You stopped using Caps Lock? Today really is a day to give thanks.

I don’t believe that is the real BLEACHER CREATURE….

HEY BLEACHER, YOU LOST YOUR IDENTITY. DON’T LET PEOPLE CRAMP YOUR STYLE. BE YOUR OWN MAN.
Triple Hawpes Brewed
Freddie Garcia to the team with the biggest payroll in baseball. Seems about right.
Mike
Garcia was in such high demand last season, the guy only got an minor league deal that became a small amount of cash if he made it on the team.
Garcia is comfortable with the Yanks, don’t see why he would not comeback.
Phillies_Aces35
Good signing. Gives you quality innings at the back end of your rotation. More than serviceable 3/4/5th starter.
notsureifsrs
the guy throws slop, but he shut me and a lot of other people up last year. earned another shot
Whowonthe2009WorldSeries
Well said, no one gave him a chance but he sure as hell did a fine job.
BLEACHER_CREATURD
Hes learning how to pitch without a fastball. He is just changing speeds, and using a lot of different pitches. He will literally throw a 75 mph curve ball and get away with it. He just has to hit his spots.
commenturd
Nice, the guy is still going at it. I used to love watching him pitch when he came up with the Mariners. All hail “The Cheif”, the original Felix Hernandez but not near as good, obviously…
SixAces
Good back end option, but beware of regression.
W. Michael
Good signing. More reliable than AJ Burnett—that bum……………who’d have seen that one?

I am pretty sure Yankees are not going into the season with this rotation because on paper, it still sucks besides Sabathia. They will probably make one of AJ, Phil or Freddy a reliever, right? There is still CJ and Darvish to go after.
slider32
Great signing for the Yanks, Freddie is a solid veteran for the back side of the rotation. If he can come close to last year’s performance he will be well worth the money he gets. Know they need to go and get a legitimate #2 like Garza, Gio, Cain, Buerhle or Darvish.
Lunchbox45
I think this brings me over the mendoza line

The only bad thing is everyone picked Freddie to the Yanks. Maybe the Yanks are the only loyal team left in baseball with the wallet to back it up.
Dave_in_Gainesville
Guy said he wanted to be a Yankee last off-season, took a minor league deal without complaining, earned his way onto the team, and ate innings like a PacMan high on pot. If he comes back to what we were expecting out of him at this time last year, we’re still way ahead re-signing him.
Not to sully Thanksgiving with a neener-neener across the table, but *some* loudmouthed Yankee hater in here said, last winter, “If Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia are in the Yankee rotation on opening day, I’ll take the rest of the division and love my chances.” Not sure who that was, but I sure hope little some cranberry sauce goes down the wrong pipe at his table this afternoon.

sounds like brian cashman
Jose
They need to get Kershaw, Lincecum, Cain or Felix now to make CC the number 2 in that rotation…I don’t care if you have to part with Cano or Granderson or have to give up the whole farm get it done Cashman…The Window of Championship Opportunity is closeing on this team faster then people think…Arod 37 next year…Jeter 38…Mo Freaking 43…Cano 30…Granderson 32…Teix 32…CC 32…Burnett 35…Swisher 32…I think…even Gardner’s up there at like 28 or 29..the only young guys who you can count on to Contribute are D-Rob,Hughes,Nova,Nunez,Joba,Montero…That’s Six yes Six guy’s…I hope your trying to make a big Splash for some type of Ace Cashman because the Core of this team is geting old fast and this Garcia signing is really meaningless…Hopefully if you don’t acquire an Ace, Yu falls in our lap and becomes one to go along with CC
