Recent White Sox notes…
- GM Kenny Williams won't rule out the possibility of trading both Gavin Floyd and John Danks, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The White Sox GM said he's continuing to lay the groundwork for next month's Winter Meetings, but that some of his fellow GMs are employing a more direct approach this week (Twitter link).
- "We're not going to make moves unless we get an impact player or impact-type prospects, guys who are close to being ready," Williams explained to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. Williams has received at least one surprising trade proposal in Milwaukee at the GM Meetings. Danks, Floyd, and Carlos Quentin could be hot commodities around the game.
- Quentin is fully recovered from a late-season shoulder injury, agent Brodie Van Wagenen told Gonzales. The 29-year-old right fielder is under team control for one more year, and we project him to earn around $6.6MM in 2012.
- Chris Sale will be a starting pitcher next season, Williams confirmed to reporters. The team's 2012 rotation is shaping up to have Jake Peavy, Philip Humber, Sale, and Zach Stewart, with the status of Danks, Floyd, and Mark Buehrle in question. Buehrle has been very popular so far this offseason.
wild05fan
I don’t believe in Humber again, Sale is going to have limited innings and growing pains along with Zach Stewart. Also the health of Peavy and his inability to log a lot of innings is going to be a major problem with this team. Not to mention 2 of 3 of Danks, Floyd, and Buehrle being gone? Have fun with that.
Ted Matula
Bingo. Williams is betting on that 1 in 10 chance that all these things don’t go wrong and/or he can catch lightning in the bottle or get Cooper to salvage some hard thrower or manage to get a starter in a trade who is more ready than not.
the_show
Williams is crazy at times but he isn’t that stupid….You can bet 2 or 3 of those guys will be back
Joey Doughnuts
Which is why we have Axelrod and Doyle waiting in the wings, as well as whatever pitcher we probably get in return for Quentin.
Hoosierdaddy92
Anybody knw what the “surprising trade proposal” was? Adam Dunn and 30 MM for nothing?
Kyle Haker
Honestly I would rather trade for Quentin than get Beltran, and for the O’s Id rather trade for him than spend the money on Prince
James DeMott
I’d like to see Quentin come to the Braves, but the salary would wind up being too much still cheaper to keep Prado and deal with him in LF.
bravesdude
Quinten is only going to be making about 1.5 million more than Prado . We should have the extra money if we wanted to , to be able to trade for Quinten and still keep Prado and still be able to sign a fairly cheap SS .
tomymogo
Quentin will make 6.6 million (estimation), Prado will make 4.4 million, so technically they’ll only spend an extra 2.2 million if they trade Prado.
It’s not out of the question, but if they trade both Prado and Jurrjens to let’s say the Angels for Erick Aybar and 2 low level prospects(with high ceiling). Angels get a 3B that can also play LF and 2B, and a starter which they’re looking for. And instead of signing the 33 year old CJ Wilson to a huge contract, they could use the money to sign Jose Reyes to replace Erick Aybar at SS.
Then the Braves could trade JJ Hoover, + 2 prospects(not named Delgado, Teheran, Vizcaino, and Minor) to Chicago for Carlos Quentin.
So basically ATL gives:
– Martin Prado 4.4 million
– Jair Jurrjens 5.1 million
– JJ Hoover (prospect)
tot: 9.5 million
for
– Carlos Quentin 6.6 million
– Erick Aybar 4.7 million
tot: 11.3 million
They’ll only be paying an extra 1.8 million and they are getting an upgrade at SS and at LF. With an increase in payroll, as Wren said they’ll have around 10 million to spend in a backup SS and a backup 3B that’ll take between 3-4 million. They don’t need to sign a starter, but if they wish to sign an experienced starter like Oswalt or Bedard they could do so
MattCMoore
Sooooo many things would have to go right for that to happen.
tomymogo
It sounds good, but I agree it’s a purely theoretical. White Sox were asking for Brandon Beachy for Carlos Quentin last time, and that is not happening for 1 year of Carlos Quentin. And are the Angels willing to go after Jose Reyes if they trade Aybar.
SS Jose Reyes
3B Martin Prado
2B Howie Kendrick
DH Kendry Morales
RF Torii Hunter
1B Mark Trumbo
LF Abreu/Wells
C Hank Conger
CF Peter Bourjous
SP
Jered Weaver
Dan Haren
Ervin Santana
Jair Jurrjens
Jerome Williams
They look good
bravesdude
Frank Wren …. is that you ?
All of that makes so much sense . I could see Wren pulling off something like that also .
philliesfan136
That would not happen + Wilson is 31, not 33.
tomymogo
I doubt it, but that’s an ideal world, any Braves fan would probably wish for it to happen(me included)
HARRISON ROSE
My guess is that the trade involved the Sox getting Nyger Morgan, and the Brewers getting someone who can play 1st base or third/short
slidingintobase
The meetings are in Milwaukee but the offer was probably not with Milwaukee
MattCMoore
Lol! Dont worry, I thought it said the trade was with the Brewers too…
lolpods
lol nyger. seriously?
wintwins
yeah seriously its T. Plush haha

I like the White Sox with a rotation of Danks, Buerhle, Floyd, Peavy, and Sale better. I think they are much closer to contending than they evidentally do since I don’t see anyone in that division running away with the title. I think it’s a roster that can win with some tweaking. No you can not erase Rios and Dunn from the lineup (surely they can’t be that bad 2 years in a row), but with Konerko, the Cuban 3b/OF, and Quentin, there is enough offense to build a lineup. I think they need a legitimate leadoff hitter and settle who’s playing 2b/3b/lf. There pitching staff is good enough if they resign Beurhle, Danks, and Floyd.
B
I have to agree with you. If they sign Buerhle, then they still have a shot. I like Stewart, but I think he’s a long relief guy next year. I think they fly under the radar this off-season…maybe entertain an offer for Quentin. De Aza in LF, sign a veteran guy to play 2B/3B when Morel or Beckham doesn’t work out. I like this team’s chances as much as I liked last years.
lolpods
enough with this ‘leadoff hitter’ business. sometimes he only leads off once a game. de aza, if he hits like he did last year, will be fine doing it. and thank god pierre will be gone.
The_Porcupine
Lead off hitter= guy who gets on base in front of your big run producers. I wasn’t implying Pierre in the least bit.
sox2727
“…I don’t see anyone in that division running away with the title.” Did I miss 2011 and not see the Tigers win the division by 15 games?
suit95
Chris Sale is gonna be a top line starter in next few years. It’s about time White Sox keep a SP w/ promise unlike Daniel Hudson & Clay Richard in recent years. I am very sure I am missing a few, but those are 2 examples off top of my head.
Guest 6104
Gio Gonzalez also comes to mind.
Joey Doughnuts
Gio Gonzalez is better than both. Clayton Richard really isn’t anything special.
TheHotCorner 2
I agree on Clayton Richard. Some of his success is due to Petco where his ERA was 2.30 compared to 5.30 on the road.
sox2727
I remember shelling Clayton Richard in the 2001 state playoffs in high school…
NYPOTENCE
Can’t wait to see what Sale can do as a starter, hoping him and Chapman actually transition well into the rotation.
TheHotCorner 2
I agree on Sale. I have been waiting for this. Now if the Rangers would move Feliz into the rotation.
EDIT: Just heard on MLB Network that Jon Heyman is reporting Feliz will start next year. Take that for what it is worth.
philliesfan136
If I were Texas, I’d keep Feliz at CL and try and sign Oswalt or Darvish (if he gets posted). Feliz only has two really good pitches right now, and coming into his third year as being a closer means he’ll have a lot more experience with the pressure of the 9th and you’ll see even more consistency. I think he’s too good in the closer’s role to be switched over so quickly and he has already said previously he doesn’t want to be a SP.
The_Porcupine
I disagree. The market is flush with closers who can replace Feliz, while the starting pitching options are thin and dicey. As an Oswalt fan, I’d be afraid of him signing in Texas. He is far from the pitcher he used to be for the Astros. He will expect to be paid like an ace, but he no longer is one. And the transition of Japanese pitchers to the MLB has been a crapshoot.
If the Rangers can resign Wilson for a reasonable number, fine. But otherwise a rotation of Ogando, Lewis, Holland, Feliz, and Harrison is pretty good. I’d rather put my financial risks into a reliever who will take fewer years (no one says you have to sign a big name closer, especially with Adams on the team) than a rotation arm that is in decline or an unknown quantity.
Jim McGrath
The Red Sox could provide a switch hitting 3 b and a prospect for Carlos Quentin.
Joey Doughnuts
I’d rather just keep Morel. His glove is amazing, and his power/plate discipline really came around at the end of last year.
lolpods
yeah you kinda have to see what you have in him. he has some power.
ferg1025
The reds would be players for Quentin’s services too. They need a right handed power hitter in between Votto and Bruce. Lord knows they have plenty of prospects that are or about major league ready to wheel and deal.
