The Pirates have announced that outfielder Xavier Paul and catcher Eric Fryer have been designated for assignment. As noted by MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch, Paul can't be outrighted to Triple-A, so he'll become a free agent if he clears waivers. In corresponding moves, the Pirates added six players to their 40-man roster today to protect them from the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
Paul was picked up on waivers from the Dodgers in April and posted a .254/.293/.349 line in 251 plate appeaarances for Pittsburgh last season. Fryer, 26, has a career .799 OPS in the minors and he recorded his first 29 Major League at-bats with the Bucs last year.

What are you two talking about? He hit .254 with 5 triples, 30 runs and 16 stolen bases, and onlhit ad 40% of the ABs that AM had. AM hit .259, had 5 triples, 89 runs and 23 stolen bases, 2 1/2 times as many ABs. If you extrapolate it to equal ABs, he kills AM – arguably the fastest man in baseball – in triples and stolen bases, and almost equals his runs : 75 to AM’s 89.
I think Nutting pretends to care but when it comes down to it, he doesn’t. I wish Mario or Mark Cuban could buy the team. If finish below .500 again next season, it’ll be 20 years in a row.

Did you really just compare Paul to Andrew McCutchen?

I hope Paul ends up with either the Mets or the A’s so he can get a real shot in the outfield. I also think the Fryer move wasn’t the best choice.

I can see the Braves making a run at him as a 4th OF and speed guy off the bench. If he were a R/S hitting, even better sense to go after him on the cheap.
