We'll keep track of all of today's minor league deals right here..
- The Astros signed Joe Thurston to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to a team press release. The 32-year-old infielder has just 384 plate appearances over parts of seven seasons with the Dodgers, Phillies, Red Sox, Cardinals, and Marlins. He's a career .226/.305/.323 hitter and only saw significant playing time during his 2009 stint with St. Louis.
- The Orioles signed six-year minor league free agent outfielder Scott Beerer, according to Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun. The 29-year-old was a second-round pick of the Rockies in 2003 out of Texas A&M.

This guy has never pitched in the majors.
valkscool
I’m glad he’s never pitched in the majors, he’s an outfielder.
Blue387
Yes, I misread his Baseball Reference page as I was looking at Charlie Zink’s page at the same time.

makes sense

That’s a project I’d like the Mets to take on. R.A. can teach him how to throw a REAL knuckleball.

Was a pitcher, converted just a few season ago to outfield.

Old news is old.

I really thought the Brewers would be in on him,
flickadave
I thought the Red Sox would pick him up for sure. Rumor has it they are going to make offers to Chickener and Gamer any day now

Is this also Duquette’s first move as general manager?
Rabbitov
Move was made before Duquette got here. He may have officially signed the papers for it though.
Richard Rowell
Honestly, this deal doesn’t look too bad. He’s posted decent OPS numbers the past couple of years. It’s only a minor league deal, so it can’t hurt. The Orioles definitely need the outfield depth.
nats2012
Beerer? The Red Sox should have signed him.
Matthew
The Orioles were apparently psyched to sign him. He’s apparently been working with Brady Anderson in the offseasons and they seem to think he can be a Luke Scott type for a few years. Its basically a no-risk move with some minor upside, so its hard to get excited about but hard to criticize.
vtadave
Hopefully he’s taking whatever Brady took back in the day…
Frank Drebin
Noooo, he just changed his “approach” that season. Right, Bautista?
Bernaldo
That is true for virtually all of these moves that clubs make this time of year. Signing minor league free agents and fringe major league players is done mostly to stock the AAA team and provide emergency call ups when injuries hit the big league club. However, a couple of times each season it seems, some team’s castoff becomes a key player – unexpectedly – for his new team. That’s what makes these moves worth following.

Joe Thurston….another AAAA player. Craig Tatum, Brian Bixler, Travis Buck, Nick Stavinoha, Bryan Snyder……well, Oklahoma City (AAA farm team of the Astros) should be well stocked this year…..

Hear yah…Boston seemed like they were in a hurry to fill up Patucket again with retreads like those as well.. Tony Pena jr., Drew Sutton, Barndon Duckworth, Charlie Haeger and Nate Spears will be back and November is half way done.. 20% of the roster.. Not much excitement it looks like at mcCoy stadium being forced to endure retread syndrome again..
Hope they save 10 or so slots for REAL prospects on the AAA team and not more people of this type, Nava and others they already had there.
