The Marlins have expressed interest in left-hander Gio Gonzalez, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. The Marlins are willing to part with Major League players and top prospects to upgrade their rotation, but they aren't convinced the Athletics would deal Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is available, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, but the A’s aren’t motivated to move him. They’d like to obtain cheap, young hitters in trades this offseason, according to Knobler (Twitter links). David Villavicencio reported earlier today that the sides are discussing a deal and that Gonzalez is hoping to sign an extension if he's traded. Frisaro reported last week that the Marlins covet Gonzalez and James Shields, suggesting that Miami will likely trade for one starter and sign another.
Gonzalez, 26, posted a 3.12 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 202 innings in 2011. He led the American League in walks and made his first All-Star team. MLBTR projects that Gonzalez will earn approximately $4.2MM through arbitration in 2012, but he's a super two player, so he won't become a free agent until after the 2015 season.
Wow, Marlins interested in someone? I’m shocked
right i feel like every year there is one team that is interested in every one, last season it was the yankees and nationals
and its always the blue jays
Whatever you do, don’t trade LoMo in a deal for Gio or Shields. I’d honestly rather sign FA pitchers than trade LoMo for either of those guys. LoMo will be a star in this league and I am confident about that. Trade Gaby, Dominguez, Volstad(just give him away for God’s sake) or whoever it takes but just keep LoMo.
Marlins express interest in not sucking.
plans will not follow through, as always
I think the two world series trophies might argue with you. And win.
I have a feeling that this season’s winter meetings are going to be fun to watch. I believe a lot of trades will be made by many teams. Will that be the 1st weekend in Dec?
Too bad Marlins probably can’t afford another starter
considering the marlins havent signed anyone and payroll will probably rise by 40 million im pretty sure they can afford any pitcher with that kind of money
notice the word ANOTHER. If they want to spend more money on another starter, they need to get people in the stands.
He’s only projected to make a little more than $4MM in arbitration, so that leaves about $36MM of Carlos’s figure…I think they might be able to squeeze in another starter for that paltry sum.

Like who?
im guessing your assuming that the marlins will continue to use a $55 million payroll once they move in? when theyve clearly stated they will be a 90-100 million from now on. so gio at 4.2 million a year doesnt seem that hard to imagine neither does a buerhle at 10-12 million, or reyes at 18, or cespedes at 8 million. Im not saying the marlins are gonna get any of these guys but you can combine any of those three and they are well within the payroll. so your idea that the marlins cant sign ANOTHER anything doesnt seem logical when the math says they can sign all four an be within that range. And its possible cause the marlins are filled with young talents like gaby sanchez, logan morrison, and mike stanton making the minimum.
Its almost like the marlins are trying to remake themselves? Like they got a new stadium or something. Weird.
“Marlins Express interest in every player in Major League Baseball”
Would be nice if Angels don’t need to face Gio..
Tomorrow’s news story. Marlins Interested in Alex Ovechkin
How about Ellsbury for Gio? include the Marlins as a third team, after they sign Reyes the Sox get Hanley back.
Athletics want a firstbasmen marlins have two playing on the field at the same time does ellsbury play first?
Why would Ells have to play 1st when they could also use him in the OF?
Because the athletics want a firstbaseman. trading gio for anything else would be counter productive
Who’s going to play CF for Oakland? They actually have more 1b options than CF’ers.
yeah all those 3 oakland options combined stats were out hit in rbi and hrs by either of the miami first baseman so… great options at first. to be honest i would find it harder to believe that there can be any worse choices in oakland’s minor league system for centerfield than there are for first base.
They want offense and my guess is they’ll take it from any place they can get it. Their entire starting OF of DeJesus, Crisp and Willingham are free agents. How you can sit there and say they prefer a 1b (one of the easiest and cheapest positions to fill) over bringing in an all-star caliber OF? Unless they are acquiring a 1b in the caliber of a Votto then it wouldn’t make any sense.
With Derek Lee and Carlos Pena on the market they would be better suited signing one of them to a 1 year deal and using Gio to fill other spots.
A’s don’t need a first baseman, they have three. Barton, carter and Allen. Seems like Allen might be a good fit for Oakland. Power, defensive and actually some speed. What they need is outfielders and maybe a 3rd baseman
what brandon allen were you watching? and the others were just as bad. Allen finished hitting .205 with 3 hrs and 2 sb in 41 games for oakland. And this is the person you want to go with? if the marlins could manage getting gio for nothing but minor leaguers thats cool since you dont want a first baseman in morrison who hit .247 23hrs 72 rbi if you want quadruple allens stat they arent even close or gaby sanchez .266 19hr 78rbi. you are right athletics dont need a first baseman when either one of the maimi first basemen did better than those 3 you named combined.
So you’re saying …
A’s get Ells
Sox get HanRam
Marlins get Gio?
This is borderline retarded. Really? In this trade, The Marlins trade Hanley for Gio? Tell me you’re kidding. Please. Tell me your kidding.
I assume your replying to “madmc44” right?
and then the redsox can trade for Mo, and the can trade lars anderson for Jose bautista too… that trade makes no sense the amount of money ELS is going to cost does not fit the A’s plans at all
These types of posts are just a little goofy.
The Marlins are interested in Gio? Really? And what team isn’t?
Couldn’t we just throw up a sticky that says something like this…?
Headline: “All Teams Express Interest in All Good Players”
Story: “All teams have expressed interest in all good players according to the media. All teams are willing to part with Major League players and top prospects to upgrade their team, but they aren’t convinced that other teams would deal good players.
Most good players are available, according to the media, but teams aren’t motivated to move them. All teams would like to obtain cheap, young players in trades this offseason, according to the media (Twitter links).
The media reported last week that teams covet good players, suggesting that teams will likely trade for good players.”
Can we do that, please?
there is a difference between “having interest” and “expressing interest”….the marlins expressing interest means that they have taken some kind of action…
expressing interest in ordering Chinese food is calling the Chinese place down the street, or asking your friend if they want Chinese too. Having interest would be more thinking to yourself “hmmm…I might like some Chinese”
I’m not familar with the Marlins minor league prospects. Do they have the prospects to even make a trade for someone like Gio or Shields? I know either Sanchez or LoMo will be the main prize, but neither will get it done by themselves.
throwing in chris volstad wouldn’t hurt. might hurt the athletics but not the marlins as for the prospects they have, yes the have some that can get it done just to name some yellich, ozuna, jenesen, dominguez. most of those r outfielders but for sure the main part of that trade would be sanchez or morrison. they also have a couple decent arms in the minors but not many.
If they get Dominguez will they also recieve the paper sack he can’t hit his way out of?
You are absolutely right his bat isn’t the greatest and a work in progress but he can run in to a few and his glove is gold glove caliber right now but he wasnt the only one i named so i mean its not like you expect prospects to be major league ready right now the outfielders are not further than AA.
…was just kidding about Dominquez; I doubt he’s actually a liability, per se, with the bat, but it doesn’t look like a +. His glove DOES draw raves though.
the problem is that yes they may think, key word think, they can survive with a 100 mill payroll but the fact is there is no proof yet. Yes they will get a big bump(maybe) with the new stadium. The fact is it will take 2-3, maybe even more, years to truly gauge the real payroll once the honeymoon phase of the new stadium and their flashy new manager is over…
Dear the Marlins,
To obtain the use of one Gio Gonzalez for the 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 seasons, you will need to send the following players to Oakland:
-Logan Morrison
-Ricky Nolasco
-Christian Yelich
-Marcell Ozuna
For 4 years of cost-controlled pitcher who’s very reachable ceiling is an ace, that’s a firm but fair deal. If the Fish really are interested in winning a title in the next 4 years, Gio will help them more than those players will.
Pablo Ozuna is retired.
I’d be fine with trading Nolasco in a deal for Gio but I want to keep LoMo at all costs. As far as Yelich goes, I don’t really follow the minor leagues that much except for the things I see about the top prospects, but I think the Fish feel the Yelich will be their CF for the future and I think he’s untouchable right now.
Your post has contradictions:
1. Are they trying to contend now, or later? If now, then you do Yelich & Ozuna for Gio. If they aren’t trying to contend now, why do they keep talking about signing everyone and their dog this offseason? Gio would be the ace or #2 for the next 4 years. That isn’t going to come cheap. Its going to need at least 3 of the players I mentioned in my original post.
2. Why would you want Morrison, who already is in the hot seat with the front office AND is about to have to deal with a certifiably insane person managing the team over a local guy like Gio? Sure LoMo might be a good player, but Gio is a massive upgrade over Nolasco and you can never have enough pitching. Miami could just buy a new LF (and one who might be able to play ok defense instead of badly). The fish already have the juggernaut in Stanton, Hanley, Gaby and whoever they get through FA this year, LoMo is good, but expendable due to his personality. You just know Loria would love to send him to the worst park in MLB right as the Marlins open up their new one. He’s evil like that.
Well obviously Gio is better than Ricky, no one is denying that lol. But if it takes Yelich and others to get Gio w/o trading LoMo then I’d do it. I just feel that LoMo will be a star in the very near future. He has so much more upside than Gaby Sanchez does IMO. I think you saw the best Gaby will ever be this past year (at least the best he can be). I personally want to trade Gaby in a deal for a pitcher rather than LoMo even though LoMo would net a better pitcher. Trade Gaby, Dominguez, Yelich, Nolasco, Volstad for Gio and prospects (too much? not enough? not quite sure TBH).
Pablo Ozuna retired 2 years ago
Ok I meant Marcell, you don’t have to post it twice….sheesh.
Thought I posted it once, safari got knocked off.
ah no problem
ok? so a firstbaseman with tons of upside locked down till 2017, an mlb pitcher that is an inconsistant version of gio, a high porspect that hits for high average, and im pretty sure you mean marcell ozuna a high prospect that hits a ton of homeruns… all that for gio? by the way this was last weeks offer for the trade which was immediately turned down. you might have some of the right people but you cant have them all.
Right and seeing as its the Marlins who need Gio, not the A’s trying to get rid of him, why not shoot the moon? Four seasons of an ace-quality pitcher is not going to come cheaply to a team in win-now mode. Think what the Braves gave the Rangers for Teixeira, and that’s probably what Beane is looking for. The A’s are not in great shape and need a franchise boosting trade or two and this is a great opportunity.
I think the trade you propose is quite realistic in terms of the value, and you’re correct; Oakland is in no hurry to trade Gio. Top of the rotation LH’ers under four years of control are probably as valuable commodity as there is in baseball. I’m pretty sure Beane is aware of that and if Gio goes, it will be for a haul.
Another headline of Marlins expressing interest. News flash, Marlins if you have interest MAKE A MOVE!
I would see the A’s taking a package of G.Sanchez, Coghlan, Volstad and a prospect for Gonzalez.
You’re not talking about Gio Gonzalez, are you?
well the Marlins can add dominguez and Yelich and take out volstad and coghlan
The A’s aren’t interested in Gaby Sanchez at all. They have tons of 1B options, that’s why they need LoMo, Yelich and Ozuna in any deal, I would hope.
They have a ton of first base options and thats why they need morrison? you mean logan morrison a first baseman converted slomo outfielder thats the major league peace you want? i guess athletics options at first must be so good to keep morrison in the outfield. why even ask for morrison or gaby if what you want is outfielders? coghlan, jensen, ozuna, yellich all outfielders and the main peace is morrison who is going to be an outfielder for oakland? i doubt that.
The A’s had Josh (no D) Willingham in LF this year, so Morrison is an upgrade over him defensively. Morrison would be the LF for the next 2-3 years then they’d make a decision to move him to 1B or DH, one would think. Its mostly bats the A’s need and Lomo is an available one. Ozuna & Yelich are a few years away and no sure thing. Its a fair package for 4 seasons of a LHP with no health problems who has had dominant stretches already in his young career.
Like I was saying, if the Fish want to win now, its time to clear the farm and make big additions like Gio Gonzalez. Losing those 4 are not going to cripple their team, look at the Braves for example, they gave the Rangers Andrus, Feliz, Harrison, Saltalamacchia & Jones for Teixeria and 28 innings of Ron Mahay, and the Braves haven’t really skipped a beat and won 86, 91 and 89 games since then while Andrus, Feliz and Harrison have been studs for the Rangers. Gio arguably has more value than Teixera did back then, so this package while grand, looks fair considering how good Gio is and how much he’s about to explode into one of the games better pitchers.
i agree with you 100% but insted of ozuna i would rather have dominguez
Those Marlins players would need to go on the 40 man roster. I think the A’s will look for a 1 for 1 swap and extra pieces will be 19-20 year old minor leaguers that do not need to be added to the 40 man roster
The Marlins are interested in (insert High quality player they will never get (except possibly Reyes) here).
Clever.
How original. Haven’t heard this one before.
The Marlins are interested in someone? Well its about time because I havent heard anything about them so far this winter.
It better take a ton to get gio he is going to be a cy young award winner in a few years
Cy Young Award winner, you mean?
thats what i meant
I’d love to see the Nationals make a move to try and get him, we definitely have the prospects to get something done
Who arent they interested in?
