D’Backs Sell Kam Mickolio To Hiroshima Carp

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 14, 2011 at 4:07pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced that they have sold Kam Mickolio to the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reported last week that Mickolio was on his way to Japan.

The 27-year-old right-hander has a 4.83 ERA along with a 33K/17BB ratio in 31 2/3 MLB innings over the course of four seasons. Mickolio has also been involved in memorable trades for Erik Bedard and Mark Reynolds.

It still sounds funny when I read about athletes getting ‘Sold’ or ‘Rented’…makes them sound like used cars.

It always cracks me up to see that a player got “sold”. Didn’t selling and buying people get outlawed about 150 years ago?

How exactly does this work?  Does a player have to agree to this first?  What if he decides he doesn’t want to go over seas, I’m guessing he can’t sign with another MLB team now?

yes he does have to agree otherwise Kawakami would have been back in Japan two years ago

Why would Kawakami rather play in AA than play in Japan. I don’t get it..

Makes the Reynolds trade look worse in hindsight, now all the D’Backs have to show for losing him is David Hernandez.

And 200 fewer strikeouts in the middle of their lineup. And an ugly glove out of their infield.

And they made it to the playoffs without him, so I’m sure they’re not too broken up about it.

And 30-35 and 80+ RBI in the middle of their lineup too.

And they might have made it further into the playoffs if they still had him there.

Or maybe they wouldn’t have even made the playoffs if they still had Reynolds.

The D-Backs got 19 homers, a better average, a better OBP, much better defense and 18 stolen bases, half of the strikeouts and half the double plays from Ryan Roberts, who manned third base in 107 of their games.

Did you know that Reynolds was the absolute worst defensiv third baseman in baseball according to UZR? Yikes…

And what about that awesome bullpen? What would the D-Backs have done without those five wins and 11 saves that David Hernandez contributed? Hernandez threw the most innings out of anyone in that bullpen. What would they have done without him?
