Players outrighted off 40-man rosters today:
- The Reds announced that they outrighted Daryl Thompson and Jared Burton off of the 40-man roster. Burton would have been arbitration eligible for the second time and MLBTR projected a salary in the $900K range for the 30-year-old.
- The Pirates announced that they outrighted Brian Burres, Kevin Hart, Brandon Wood and Steve Pearce to Triple-A to create 40-man roster space. All four players can now elect free agency. Wood and Pearce would have been arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason, and though neither player projected to earn even $1MM, the Pirates decided to cut them loose instead of tendering contracts.
- The Tigers outrighted catcher Omir Santos and lefty Brad Thomas, tweets MLB.com's Jason Beck. Thomas would have been arbitration eligible, but it was clear he wouldn't make it to the point of being tendered a contract after missing much of the season with an elbow injury.

The man, the legend, Omir Santos.

You wonder why the Angels GM got canned? Wood would have brought a ton three years ago.

“Outrighted: Tigers”
Man, and I thought Steinbrenner was prone to overreaction.

I did a double take when I read the headline as well and thought “damn, and I thought the Sox had a rough offseason so far”.

Honestly tho i didn’t think santos did an awful job….wtf?

I wouldn’t mind having Santos as a backup to Chooch.

Omir Santos will always have my heart for that BOMB that he hit off Papelbon over the Green Monster to win it for the hideous 09 Mets

As if it wasn’t bad enough for Pirates fans before, now they’re losing their Wood.

Either the Tigers are committed to VMart backing up Avila next year, or they’re going to bring someone from outside the organization in as backup.
forkball27
Yeah, I think the Tigers would be smart to bring in a backup catcher from outside the organization. Vmart is definately a solid DH and you gotta have Avila in the lineup. So an older backstop would be a good idea. They also need an upgrade in the infield and in the pitching staff overall.
MattCMoore
That is all true. It sounds like alot but the Tigers are set at the core…

I wouldn’t mind someone like Ryan Doumit, who can play a few other positions (1B and OF), in addition to catcher.

Here’s what I wouldn’t mind seeing:
Ryan Doumit (would give Tigers some flexibility as third catcher and can also play 1B and OF)
Aaron Hill (can also play some 3B) or Kelly Johnson (Type A free agent though)
Bruce Chen/Jeff Francis/someone of that ilk (cheap one or two year deal, could be moved later when/if Turner is ready for #5 spot in rotation)
Juan Cruz
and maybe Grady Sizemore (take a flyer on him and give him a one or two year deal with incentives, and possibly an injury clause of some sort)
I’m not sure how likely any of this is and I haven’t had my caffeine yet.

DD said they’re looking for a backup catcher. VMart will be the full-time DH.
