The latest on Baltimore's search for a new GM:
- The Orioles could interview one more candidate and probably won't conduct a second round of interviews, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter links). If the Orioles conduct another interview, it would probably take place early next week.
- Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun weighs in, pointing out that Dipoto wasn't necessarily Baltimore's preferred candidate.
- De Jon Watson has met with the Orioles three times and had dinner with manager Buck Showalter on Wednesday, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (on Twitter).
- The Orioles are "very likely" to hire Tony LaCava for their general manager job, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). The Angels are about to hire Jerry Dipoto, one of Baltimore's four candidates, as their next GM. This leaves LaCava, De Jon Watson of the Dodgers and John Stockstill of the Orioles in the mix for the Baltimore job.
- LaCava is Toronto's vice president of baseball operations and assistant General Manager. He oversees player development and Latin American operations for the Blue Jays and has also worked for the Angels, Braves, Expos and Indians. He interviewed for GM jobs in Pittsburgh and Seattle in the past. Here's my piece on LaCava for MLBTR's GM Candidates series.
Damn.
He will be missed
He will be missed
He will be missed
So…he’ll be missed?
I’d love this hire, but I take John Heyman’s word with a 40-lb bag of rocksalt.
I will never forget when Heyman told us all that Roy Halladay was traded to the Mets.
That sucks. Congrats though Tony, thanks for everything.
Reagins sucks as…oh wait, wrong Tony. Go on.
Sigh. Instead of jumping off the Bay Bridge as originally planned, this is only mildly disappointing, and as such, I will merely take a jump into the Inner Harbor.
Odds of instant death are much lower, odds of slow painful death – much greater.
Oh come on, dysentery isn’t that painful.
I’ve actually warmed up to LaCava and if, big if, he’s given the ability to act on his own accord I think this is a good GM signing. Why are you so Dipoto over LaCava?
Oh I’m not. I was just feeling dramatic. LaCava is #3 on my wish list behind DiPoto and Levine so I’m not upset at all.
Hopefully this isn’t true because I would hate to see Tony go. If so though, thanks for everything and best of luck with the O’s.
Balls.
I just hope whoever the new GM is, they set about firing the stadium sound guy. Yes, yes, I know we should focus on building a winning team…but if I have to listen to “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, even one more time, after an Orioles player swings at the first pitch and hits into a double play with bases loaded, I may go homicidal.
Don’t hate me, but I’ve wanted to axe “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” since I was about 14.
I used to have to sing that song in choir, I can’t believe someone would torture a baseball stadium with that.
The Orioles are “very likely” to hire Tony LaCava
Well when your remaining competition (currently) is Watson (West Coast) and Stockstill ( Oh No!). The odds look good for LaCava. What the Orioles need are more Horses in the Race.
Does anyone know if LaCava had anything to do with Accardo & Gregg in the past?
The way I feel is the Blue Jays can keep him! And you can have back Gregg and Accardo.
Funny thing about the Blue Jays I used to like them from a far. Especially when McGriff was a rookie! Anyway….
What??? *gasp* Does this mean you won’t let us take back Jo-Jo Reyes???
If you take back Jo-Jo Reyes, we’ll throw in Jakubaskas (sp?) and Fox.
Rabittov, this is very good news.
all kidding aside….I think Orioles have a good core of young players and can turn things around quickly with a few shrewd moves.
Do you still want Hart?
I would be content if the Orioles got John Hart
Jays fans should relax. It’s Heyman. Us O’s fans do not have any confidence whatsoever that this statement will come to fruition when there are plenty of unqualified people out there to be the O’s GM. 😉
Would love if this is true. However, I think thad levine deserves an interview as well. effin david freese if screwing up the timeline
Just hire LaCava and be done with it!
Your right Toronto…. that Rasmus trade was horrible for the Cardinals.. HAHA
2011 WORLD CHAMPIONS!
The problems with your post:
1) Your should say “You’re” or “You are.”
2) No one is talking about Rasmus on this board so your post is in reference to nothing.
3) Are you implying LaCava made the Rasmus trade? This has not been stated in your post.
4) You are implying that the Rasmus trade won you the World Series? You won the World Series because your team played well and was well coached. I look forward to you listing the reasons why that trade won you the series and look even more forward to my response of telling you why you are wrong.
5) Congrats on winning the World Series, the Cards earned it.
Disclaimer: This post shall in no way be construed as me defending or supporting the Blue Jays.
1. Nothing more annoying than a person correcting grammer on a baseball blog. Its called a typo or shortcut but its all good YOU”RE not the only bozo who has complained about something so extraneous.
2. I personally watched and experienced tons of jays fans on this very same blog bragging about the Rasmus trade being such a bad move for the Cardinals and how much of a genius AA is.
3. Im not implying LaCava made this trade, I just looked for the most recent Jays post on here.
4. That trade by far helped the Cardinals win the World Series. Did you even watch the playoffs? The bullpin held us through the NLDS, ALCS, and the World Series. Yeah, all the players contributed but had the Cardinals not sent cry baby Rasmus and his father out of the country and reworked the enitre bullpin they would not have won the World Series. Not with Miller, Rasmus, Walters.
5. Thank you
quiet you.
