It's been a busy day for baseball's west coast teams. Angels GM Tony Reagins resigned, we learned that Dodgers star Matt Kemp won't talk about an extension until next season, and the Athletics swung a minor deal. Let's round up some other news from the two west divisions…
- Dan Hayes of The North County Times hears that contract extension talks between Cameron Maybin and the Padres have "slowed significantly." We heard that the two sides had mututal interest in an extension earlier this month. (Twitter link)
- "I do not believe so," said Angels president John Carpino when asked if manager Mike Scioscia could be promoted to GM after Reagins' resignation by Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times (Twitter link). "That would probably be a question for Mike."
- Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times lists some GM candidates for the Angels. Here is MLBTR's list of the game's top 20 GM candidates.
- The Athletics announced in a press release that the contracts of bench coach Joel Skinner, pitching coach Ron Romanick, and hitting coach Gerald Perry will not be renewed. Interim manager Bob Melvin signed a three-year extension recently, and he'll likely be able to bring in his own people.

Though last year and the year before that, everyone was all “Fire Doug Melvin”
Funny how quickly things can change

Pitching coach Ron Romanick gone after one year. He didnt get much of a shot. The A’s must love Tye Waller-that guy has survived a few shake ups.

I thought this site reported that Kemp won’t talk extension once the season starts, not won’t talk extension until next season. Which is it?
BlueSkyLA
Beat me to it. Actually this site linked an LA Times article which reported that Kemp won’t talk contracts during the season. This one gets it wrong for some reason. Apparently the error won’t be corrected.

Yeah, I figured as much. It would seem backwards if he only wanted to talk extension DURING the season. I used to be a sportswriter at a small newspaper, kind of a nit-picker when it comes to typos and erroneous headlines. Today’s media drives me crazy with all the shoddy writing. Where’s the frikkin’ editors at, high-school? Nobody seems to care for quality of work anymore.

I can identify, having worked as a freelance newspaper columnist myself for a number of years. When the economics of the newspaper business starting changing for the worse in the early 2000s, seems the first to go were the copy editors (and the freelancers). The web media is another story. Unless they were outgrowths of traditional media, they’ve typically had little exposure to basic journalism issues like copy editing, and don’t see the importance of sweating what must seem like the small stuff. Tim does a good job here but I’m willing to bet that nobody has overall copy editing authority. That would be typical for web media.

Exactly, the story here as written is just the opposite of what the other story says.

Oh my what a nightmare that would be

Was wondering what ol’ Catfish was up to. He’s a manager candidate?

Time to crank up the Kim Ng for GM bandwagon, She’d actually be a great hire, and should have been the Dodgers choice instead of Colletti.

On a less serious note, the Padres had better get Maybin signed to a long term extension. He is the exact type of player that can excel in Petco. While they’re at it, signing Latos to a long term deal as well would be a good idea. He seemed to turn the corner late this season.

i hope Matt kemp doesn’t sign an extention…i would love to see him in a Yankee uniform…if he refuses to sign with the Dodgers then they may want to trade him i wonder what it take…
