The Red Sox announced that they designated Nate Spears for assignment to create 40-man roster space for Joey Gathright and Trever Miller. They transferred J.D. Drew to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move.
Spears, 26, appeared in three games for the Red Sox this season, but spent most of the season at Triple-A. He posted a .248/.355/.397 line at Pawtucket, where he played all four infield positions and both corner outfield positions. The Orioles selected the left-handed hitter in the fifth round of the 2003 draft.

I love Gathright. Special pinch runner here we come.

I wouldn’t be shocked if someone signs Spears. He’s not awesome or anything, but he’s worth a spot on an expanded roster, and he has all of his options left. I could see a team like Arizona picking him up for some extra infield depth.

Drew they could have already DFA’d anyway. he is not going to be back next year with his contract expiring and even if he was able to play, not better than reddick has been from the LH side.

Why DFA him? How does that benefit anyone any more than the 60-day DL? At least with the DL he’s still part of the company.
