2:42pm: The Rockies won the claim on Rodriguez, tweets Rosenthal, and talks are ongoing. The Rockies are particularly low on starting pitching depth at the moment, and may have the idea of another miracle playoff run in the back of their minds. They're currently 8.5 games out. Otherwise, Rodriguez would provide veteran depth for the next few seasons with Ubaldo Jimenez gone. As Rosenthal notes, the Rockies aren't going to want to give up anything of value if they're to take on Rodriguez's entire contract.
1:12pm: Lefty Wandy Rodriguez has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Currently Rodriguez is owed just $1.38MM for the rest of this season, plus $36MM for 2012-14 assuming he exercises a player option for the final season. The Astros have the option of dumping that commitment on the other club, working out a trade with the team, or pulling Rodriguez back.
Rodriguez, 32, has a 3.31 ERA, 7.7 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9, and 45.3% groundball rate in 147 innings this year.

i feel the indians for some reason
Kyle Buttermore
Cleveland for sure.
Jeremy Sinon
Twins
MauerPower
Better not be the Twins.
Kyle Buttermore
I could actually see Bill Smith doing that.
JacksTigers
That would be incredibly stupid.
jwsox
Why would that be stupid????? The twins could then have two mediocre pitchers getting way way way over paid with wandy and pavano.
Not Fred Titmus
Must be Yankees.
Tom Glennon
Red Sox?
theroundsquare
So how long do the teams have to work out a deal or call it off? 72 hours?
Kenneth
Dump him.
Josh Wagner
yankees or diamondbacks.
Paul Andrew Mawdsley
What about the jays? there was rumors at the deadline of him getting traded to the jays. He fits well with them as they need another solid starter in their rotation cuz they have a constant rotating door scenario for the 5th spot
Luke J.
brewers!
Dave
it’s the Tigers. They wanted a LH pitcher and now have one. See ya, Brad Penny.
threeeds
This could be potentially true. They need something to shore up their rotation with Porcello struggling as of late and Penny being borderline for most of the season.
inleylandwetrust
I don’t think so since he’s under contract for a couple more years. The rotation seems pretty much set for next season and beyond with Verlander, Scherzer, Fister, Porcello, and Jacob Turner.
$1742854
OK, can someone explain to me why the Astros want to dump this guy? His stats are really good overall–consistent ERA, WHIP, K and BB/9, etc. He might be a bit overpaid, but you know what you’re getting year after year.
fxx3605
there a team in development might as well get rid of him now to save money maybe get a prospect
John Burgess
Who said the Astros want to dump him? The Astros certainly did not say that. They specifically said at the deadline that they had no intention of trading him unless they were getting prosepcts in return. The only one’s saying anything about a salary dump is uniformed, bandwagon AL fans.
patrick
uhh…their new owner wants their payroll to get to around $50 million…the ONLY way they can do that is by ridding themselves of the Rodriguez contract….so i guess us dumb AL fans can just read context clues. Odds are the Astros get very very little or nothing in return…this is simply for salary relief
monty4aloha
I am A Red sox fan and don’t see where the Astros ever implied what you are thinking.. They have allways said they would trade him for prospects.
John Burgess
THEN, they will hang on to him and trade him during the winter meetings when there will be a bigger market for him. That has been said all along.
Bucs
I’ll go with a sleeper. Rangers.

Cardinals?
Brewers?
Diamondbacks?
Phils?
No way the Yankees or Rangers or Tigers because they lead their Divisions.
rayking
Diamondbacks is a good guess. He has to go through the NL entirely for an AL team to get him, so I don’t think the Yankees or BoSox are likely.
Damakibe
I hope it’s KC. They sorely need SP help and at 12/yr max, it’s not a bad deal. Heck, if they can work out a trade w HOU for a prospect, and HOU gives some cash, even better!
Guest 6658
I’d rather see Gil Meche come out of retirement for you guys at that price.
Smurf
I’d love the Cubs to claim this guy. Wouldn’t have to face him anymore, AND we’re going to need starters next year anyway!
stewie75
Cubs need less #3 starters who make $10M+ not more of them.
daveineg
The Cubs are in need of starters badly assuming they dump Zambrano, and while Rodriguez isn’t cheap, he’s decent enough value for that price and it’s a 3 year commitment, not a 4-5 year that someone like him might command in FA.
Rodriguez, Cashner, Garza, and Dempster is at least respectable as a rotation, and they can fill the 5th spot with another cheap option. It also gives them at least the option of considering trading Dempster who has just a year left on his deal and might have some value.
So I wouldn’t rule out the Cubs.
stewie75
I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, but with so many teams being SO reluctant to take this guy and his money on- it’s made me a lil weary… I think $12M could be spent a lil more efficiently in the offseason. Guess it wouldn’t be SO bad, but it’s a good chunk of money to eat up for a #3, esp when there’ll be a new GM coming in, let him figure out if he wants an overpriced SP.
Steveospeak
what number 3 starters do the Cubs have??
Steveospeak

Not the Yankees…
jbjoyner
Yanks and Dbacks did not claim Wandy
SpecialFNK
didn’t the Yankees already say they had no interest in him?
as an owner of Wandy in fantasy baseball, I’m concerned. he has always done much better at home than on the road. every season back to and including 2007 he had has an ERA under 3 at home and at least 4+ on the road.
2010 home- 2.82/1.14
2010 road- 4.41/1.44
2009 home- 2.08/1.06
2009 road- 4.05/1.44
2008 home- 2.99/1.20
2008 road- 4.34/1.46
2007 home- 2.94/1.11
2007 road- 6.37/1.55
his new home might now work out very well.
jbjoyner
Teams will always say anything to prevent competition from getting who they want.
East Coast Bias
Would it possible for someone to claim Wandy in hopes of flipping him next season or in the offseason to a team in need of pitching, who can absorb his salary? I mean, besides CC and CJ, there really isn’t anyone else…
ibleedorangeandblack
teams will do anything to better their own situation. a year ago the Giants claimed Cody Ross and stuck him in a packed outfield with Pat Burrell, Andres Torres, Nate Schierholtz, and Aaron Rowand just for the sake of not letting Ross play for San Diego and kill their playoff shots. so hypothetically speaking if im a second place team, id claim him, use him for the rest of the season, and then trade him to the opposite league or just somewhere outside my division when he starts earning 12 mil a year over the off-season (Depending how he pitches). if he plays like Sabathia did when he showed up in milwaukee, i hold onto him
Blue387
It would be hilarious if my Mets claimed him. Have you seen my team’s pitching staff?
ARodinyourPujols
I don’t see him getting by Toronto, Cleveland or Detroit. I definitely don’t see him getting to Boston or New York, but stranger things have happened.
meanguygary
I’m thinking it was Toronto.

Why would they claim him there just going to pay him for what?to make sure they dont come in last

For next year, to pitch with Strasburg, Zimmerman, Detwiller, and Lannan.

Gotta be the White Sox. For no reason of course, just for the heck of it.

They’re cutting payroll by many accounts.

Definitely think it’s gonna be the Blue Jays.

NOOOOO! DO NOT DEAL WITH AA WADE. You will get your A$$ handed to you! … This is the worst possible situation for an Astros fan.
…I can’t believe we’re probably going to give him up for nothing.
threeeds
That press conference probably has to do with the Aaron Hill and John McDonald for Kelly Johnson trade.
rbeezy
Couldn’t see the indians as I don’t see them commiting that type of money for Wandy. If the Indians are looking for anything they should be focused on a bat.
Coollet
AA gets him and will flip him to the Angels for Trumbo
Paul Andrew Mawdsley
Why would the jays do that? they have a no need for a 1B and really could actually use wandy beyond this year and have the money to pay him
Coollet
Really? I know the Angles are the running joke but come on, nobody is that stupid. AA isn’t a real jedi.
patrick
that would be less bad than the wells trade
Coollet
Touche
Ryan Hammer
Coolet…I don’t think Reagins is going to the Blue Jays well anymore. 🙂 AA has worked him over enough to the point where TR probably won’t even return his calls…
Jose_Bautista
AA scheduled a conference in 30 minutes. OUT OF NOWHERE! Lets see
meanguygary
Jays presser could be about AA’s rumored extension.
stl_cards16
I would say that’s a lot more likely than the Jays taking on Wandy.
nats2012
I think its the Jays.
SalvadorM
Kansas City, they need pitching, this year and next year and next.
LUWahooNatFan
Wouldn’t be against the Nationals getting him, he’d fit in nicely with Stras,Zimm, Det, and Lannan, and gives Peacock and Milone more time in the minors until Stras reaches his innings limit
Scott
Padres. Obviously.
Scott
Padres. Obviously.

Jays just dumped Hill in order to save $$. Wonder if that’s related…
nats2012
ESPN said its not the Nats.
Chris1G
If ESPN is saying it isn’t the Nats, then it’s probably the Nats who claimed him
LarrySellers
So it’s not the Nats now…….
I’m calling it – the Brewers.
Sneaky Melvin.
Scott
It’s the Rockies. 100%
Kate
I’m glad the update adding that it’s not the Nationals was posted so quickly after the previous speculation that it WOULD be the Nats — my blood pressure couldn’t have taken much more worrying that Rizzo would be so stupid. So, thanks, I guess.
Remember92
Thinking it could possibly be the Pirates. He would be an upgrade over Maholm for a few million more and they pay Paul’s buyout. Plus the rotation has struggled the second half and have injuries. Could be a move toward next year. See ya later Paul…

I wouldn’t mind my team taking him at all. 12 mil a year on a 3 year deal is reasonable considering there is nobody on the market this winter. It’s not like he is some Carlos Silva scrub or something……

jesus that is an anticlimactic turn. the rockies are weird
AdenverGuy
I tweeted at Troy Renck something to the effect of “please say the rockies claimed him” This could be a very good move for the Rockies if they can trade some players to their AAAA team the Astros
tmengd
Isnt ian stewart with and out of favor with the rockies? Maybe him for wandy ? Change of scenery might do him good
notsureifsrs
i’d try to take full advantage of colorado’s weirdness and poach fowler and eric young jr. as well
tmengd
Ironic the rockies claimed him.he is suppose to pitch against them tomorrow.would be funny if he ended up pitching for them tomorrow instead.or traded right after he beats them.
AdenverGuy
Would be funny if he pitched 1 inning like ubaldo then got trade to the rockies mid game and then the rockies pitched him against them in the same game. (god I hope there’s some rule that allows that to happen)
Also Choo just hit a walk off 3 run HR. He’s a beast when on
tmengd
I doubt if they are close to trade we will see wandy pitch though.I guys we will know of they call someone up.astros still dont know who is pitching for them thursday either.
dilbert719
I don’t know about that happening with pitchers, or in the same exact game, but position players have played for two teams in a single day before. In 1922, OF Max Flack of the Cubs and OF Cliff Heathcote of the Cardinals played in the first game of a double header, got traded for each other, and then played the second game against their former teammates.
Also, Joel Youngblood of the Mets and Expos got two hits for two teams in two different cities in the same day. He hit a single in the 3rd for the Mets in NY, then was pulled from the game and traded to the Expos for a PTBN. The Expos were playing in Philly that day, so he went to Philadelphia, grabbed a uniform, and got into the game halfway through. He collected a single in the seventh to complete the feat.

MattCMoore
I swear, before it was posted that it was the Rockies, there was a comment about every other team besides them…
daveineg
I don’t understand why the Astros would settle for “nothing of value” for Rodriguez. His contract is not onerous at all for a guy with 3 straight seasons with an ERA of 3.60 or less.
Surely there would be teams interested in the offseason.
AdenverGuy
The typical Baseball media guys are claming that there is no “momentum” . I’m pretty sure that if the Yanks, Sox, Phils aren’t in the running for a guy its big medias MO to try to bash every other teams chance of making a trade.
notsureifsrs
i’m pretty sure it’s actually because the rockies have no significant incentive to give up good pieces right now and the astros don’t save much more money trading him now than in the offseason when they can field multiple offers
i.e. i’m pretty sure it’s because there isn’t any momentum
92blueblood_la
Funny how no one guessed right lol…… why guess. no point to it…………… but anyways whoever gets him will regret it. Specially if its in the al east or nl east… yea he puts up nice stats. But I am justt not a wandy believer….. Id take him if he made 6-7 mill……….. but he doesnt…… hope the rockies do get him that would be a positive move for the rest of the division
