Links for Saturday night, after Jose Bautista extended his on-base streak to ten consecutive plate appearances…
- The Brewers formally announced their minor league contract with infielder Luis Figueroa, reports MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy (on Twitter). The deal was first agreed to last weekend.
- Left-hander Lee Hyde was designated for assignment by the Nationals earlier today, but Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports that Garrett Mock was also a candidate to get the axe. He was spared and instead placed on the disabled list.
- Yankees GM Brian Cashman told ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand that the Yankees tried to acquire Russell Martin via trade in each of the last three seasons (Twitter link). Cashman got his man this winter, signing him as a free agent after the Dodgers non-tendered him.
- Mets GM Sandy Alderson indicated to Andy Martino of The New York Daily News that there just aren’t any moves to be made right now. “In this situation, there’s not a lot that someone in my situation can do,” said Alderson. “It’s almost organic. [If any moves] happen, if it’s going to happen from within.”
tacko
Cashman never misses an opportunity to publicly pat himself on the back after making a decent move or blame others for his mistakes.
I don’t think there’s been a bigger tool for a GM in MLB history.

You Mad?!

He mad.

well he was a jock athlete in college

Yeah, that Cashman is such an ass! Remember the time he… and that other time when… and let’s not forget that fay in which he personally… oh well, he probably is Republican, so there!
YanksFanSince78
A) I didn’t hear any gloating or “patting himself on the back” in that little blip of a tweet.
B) Cashman never blamed anyone because he choose to take a chance on Feliciano.
People really overreact about stuff.
strikethree
Well… he blamed the Mets.
But, overall, I think Cashman is a fine GM — not perfect but good.

It’ll be interesting to see what’s gonna happen if Martin has really returned to 2007 form (or better?) and Montero keeps crushing AAA. Small sample size for both obviously, but still.
ARod's Ring
Montero should stay the whole season at AAA, with posada gone for Next year Montero could take over DH and Back up catcher.
TapDancingTeddy
I’ve been thinking that ever since they sent Montero down. He really is unlikely to become a quality defensive catcher, so when Posada’s contract runs out, I think he’s the Yanks next DH.
Austin Romine is more likely to pose a threat to Russell Martin, assuming Romine ever convinces the Yanks that he can hit well at the big league level.

•Yankees GM Brian Cashman told ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand that the Yankees tried to acquire Russell Martin via trade in each of the last three seasons…

Posada says “Gee thanks. Good to know”.
I usually don’t have a problem with much of anything Cashman says but this comment he could have kept to himself.
TapDancingTeddy
It seems Cash has developed a little “diarrhea of the mouth” issue. Less is more with GM’s – and nobody needs to know what they are thinking.
YanksFanSince78
Yeah. Not sure why but he’s more open and blunt than most GMs, especially stuff that’s usually requires a little more tact. But maybe he figures that as much as said about him already then why not?
notsureifsrs
i’d bet that cashman gets asked more questions more often than maybe any other GM in the league. it’s no excuse for getting sloppy, but it probably explains why he always seems to be saying things
woadude
LOL at Diarrhea of the mouth.
RedSoxDynasty
No kidding! Basically he’s saying that he’s been looking for a new catcher since the day Posada signed 3 years ago. This doesnt make sense though cuz Posada was fine on D as recent as 2 years ago!
YanksFanSince78
All that being said and with the obvious disclaimer that it’s a small sample size, most of his reclamation pickups are paying off and with Hughes and Nova not wowing anyone guys like Silva and Milwood might pay off too.
woadude
The Orioles will win the AL East before Silva becomes anything close to paying off, his only good quality will be he can throw awesome BP sessions.
woadude
BP as in Batting practice, not Bullpen.
YanksFanSince78
Silva pitched about 15 decent games out of the 21 he started last year. To say he can’t contribute ANYTHING relative to the lge minimum he would be paid is sort of short-sighted. If all he ever does is take over the long man role that Colon held and fills in spot starts in the rotation at a 4.50 FIP then he would’ve been worth his pay.
woadude
Yeah, we shall see, I cannot wait to ask you about him at seasons end.
RazorShines
Sounds to me like the Mets wont be trading Reyes, something that Mets fans knew already and writers keep forgetting
