WEDNESDAY: The Yankees designated Sanchez for assignment and announced that he has an offer to play in Japan.
MONDAY: The Yankees are selling Romulo Sanchez's rights to a Japanese team, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch (on Twitter). Sanchez, 27 in April, is an out of options hurler with a 95 mile per hour fastball.
He spent most of last year at Triple-A, posting a 3.97 ERA, 8.3 K/9, 5.1 BB/9, and 0.7 HR/9 in 104 1/3 innings. The Yankees acquired him from the Pirates about two years ago for Eric Hacker. At that time, Baseball America wrote Sanchez was "a big, intimidating presence…[who] lacks a great feel for pitching and has control lapses that keep him from dominating."
Joey Doughnuts
To the White Sox for Brent Lillibridge, obviously.
danman1202
Perhaps he’s just being sent down?
qbass187
Not without passing through waivers first…which he hasn’t. Can’t just be sent down without options.
cayanksfan
Here comes Felix! Tough choice though…
start_wearing_purple
Sanchez was traded to the Mexican Leagues for Felix Diaz?
cayanksfan
Felix Rodriguez that is….
PostMoBills
A bullpen arm? The Twins probably traded Slowey or Liriano for him. Maybe both.
danman1202
If it’s a trade it’s probably for a utility outfielder.
Threat_Level_RedSox
Probably not considering they acquired Chris Dickerson last week
danman1202
That’s what’s confusing about this. Did they just trade him for another minor leaguer because they don’t think he has a future with the club? They have dickerson, and obviously Sanchez isn’t going to get you an upgrade over that considering he’s not really good.
andrewyf
They traded him because he didn’t make the major league team, and they’d lose him if they tried to pass him through waivers.
Keith Lawyer
Twins traded Eric Hacker for him.
Dave_Gershman
Has to be the Astros or Nationals.
grownice
Close…
Bo 2
Probably Washington. They’ve been stockpiling arms for the past week.
Truitalian9
Probably attempting to get a back up catcher who is better than Molina.
YanksBlogger96
That’s what I was thinking. Its disturbing to see Gustavo as a back up when he only started 13 career games
SixAces
But he is a veteran with 13 games to his name! Plus the 0 in offense means he has to be good with his defense!
/sarcasm for all the folks with broken sarcasm detectors
Nickkk
Whatever it is, it’s gotta be good… Cashman only keeps the good deals quiet.
jhawk90
Roger Dorn hung a tag in his locker – psych!
LifeLongYankeeFan
Man I was hoping we could have gotten Rick Vaughn and his mistresses for Sanchez. Oh well.
Rangersfan32 2
Well seeing as how the Yankees have a stiuation with their backup catcher position, wouldn’t Jake Taylor be a better fit?
LifeLongYankeeFan
You do make a good point we already have Joba so we really don’t need Vaughn and Taylor is only making the league minimum so it would make sense.
slamsand
For Schierholtz maybe? My guess is Sanchez for Nate Schierholtz on SF
Rick Garcia
Yanks must need that money so they can keep feeding Colon his snacks
YanksFanSince78
Taken care of. Quizno sponsorship. DONE.
whatever
MMMMMMM toasty. I hate you actually, that serisouly made me hungry.
YanksFanSince78
With extra cheese. I hear they are going to name a sandwhich after him as well. It’s going to be called a BC’s Best. Pull BQ pork, Ham, Roast Beef, Three Cheese (Provolone, Colby Jack and Pepper Jack), smotherd in onions and bell peppers. Comes with a side of cholesterol to dunk it in as well. Mmmmm mmmmm good.
whatever
MMMMMMM toasted heart disease..
inleylandwetrust
That sounds absolutely amazing

I would eat the heck out of that sub.

Where is the “love” button?
ballmich
Wow, Japan? Is that really such a great move for Sanchez given what is going on there at the Fukushima nuclear plant? Until that situation is resolved and the radiation impacts is better understood, I wouldn’t be signing up for this.
YanksFanSince78
You know what? Didn’t even think of that. I’m sure that teams aren’t going to play anywhere near that location but still.
I wonder what say, if any, players have to accept or reject that kind of move?
ballmich
Yes, they need the player’s approval to sell them to a foreign team.
A fair amount of radiation as far south as Tokyo. It really depends on which way the wind is blowing that day. And radiation in the tap water is a really bad sign. They can say that it’s safe to drink for everyone but infants, but would you want to drink it? Really, the situation is a lot worse than Japan is letting on.
All I’m saying is that playing in Korea would be a safer choice this year.
YanksFanSince78
I wonder if this is some sort of trick? When does their season start? Maybe he willbe offered back to them at some point?
notsureifsrs
per the WSJ, the season start has been pushed back to april 12

WeAK!

Is it one of those Spring Training jokes?
