The Rockies acquired third baseman Josh Fields from the Pirates for a player to be named later or cash, tweets the team. Fields had been reassigned to the Pirates' minor league camp three days ago. He'd signed a minor league deal in December. The Pirates have jettisoned several of their minor league signings, with Andy Marte perhaps the next to go.
Fields, 28, missed most of the 2010 season due to hip surgery, though he had 104 interesting plate appearances before being non-tendered. Aside from third base, he's dabbled at first and left field.
Fields was drafted 18th overall by the White Sox in 2004 and was once considered a top prospect. He crushed 23 home runs in 418 plate appearances with the Sox in '07, nine of which came in August of that year.

Sounds like a potential Josh Fields/Ian Stewart platoon.

I would assume Fields is optioned to Col. Springs…where he will get a chance to really put up some numbers with out a humidor there.
there is no roster spot on the Rockies, unless Lopez is traded.
And…that is exactly the report now from the Denver Post. “Won’t be added to the 40 man roster, and will be heading to Col. Springs”

AAA depth with a shot at a call-up at some point due to a trade or injury. I remember when this kid was among the “next big thing” names, though, so you never know.

I don’t expect the Pirates to receive anything significant in dealing Fields.

Me neither, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to ask for Carlos Gonzalez

104 interesting plate appearances ???
Ive seen Fields play quite a bit and unless you think looking lost at the plate is interesting, Im not sure what this means.

Some day, Andy Marte will tell his grandchildren that he was a gigantic failure at the major league level, but hey. At least he struck out Nick Swisher!

if he can regain his form fields can be a force. he was ok at the hot corner and actually pretty good defensively at 1st. And when hot and his head is in the game can carry a team. I remember konerko, dye and jim thome all saying that he is the strongest hitter on the team(at the time) and when his head is right and his swing is right he is one of the better power hitters. But for some reason he screwed him self up and didnt get another chance to prove him self because of gordon beckham. If he gets back to 07 form and with the colorado thin air he could be a force

so do you think he could be a force? I mean if his head is right, can he be a force, if his head is right?
