Mets GM Sandy Alderson met with Omar Minaya earlier in the week to determine Minaya's role in the Mets' revamped front office, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com. Alderson, who succeeded Minaya this October, said he outlined possible responsibilities for Minaya, who is still determining whether he wants to remain in the organization.
The Mets are paying Minaya for 2011 and 2012 regardless of whether he works for them. He'll earn about $1MM per year on his contract, which he signed after the 2008 campaign. For a closer look at the moves the Mets made under Minaya from 2004-10, check out MLBTR's Transaction Tracker.
And here I thought “you’re fired” meant pack your bags, we never want to see you again.
In the real world sure…but in the insular world of MLB it seems to mean something like “Get out NOW, and don’t you EVER come back….’til next week.”
In the real world I bet your employer hasn’t already committed $2 million over the next two years to you.
too bad for omar the mets don’t actually have his money
We can always put him on the Bobby Bonilla plan.
Omar has one of the best eyes for international/young talent in baseball. He has great connections with scouts and “unofficial scouts” in DR, Venenzuela, Panama and Europe.
Sandy has said that he has known Omar for almost 20 years, he respects his work, they have a good relationship, and would welcome him to stay on board.
Best case scenario: Omar stays on board, learns how to incorporate statistical analysis along with his old school method of scouting, learns more about proper development in the minor league system and contract negotiation techniques and reading the market from Sandy.
Omar could be a top 3 GM had he been mentored under Sandy during his first tenure as Asst. Gm ( 97-01 ).
This.
you left out worst case scenario: minaya institutes himself in the line of succession for the mets GM job and unscrupulously murders alderson.
Easy: he can be a reverse-scout. When he tells the Mets to give a big-money contract to a player, they run the other way.
you’re fired…LOL jk, we’re the mets, we have no idea what we’re doing
How original! A comment knocking on the Mets!
Oh come on even mets fans have fun knocking the mets now. It’s our only way to cope with the pain.
I know, I’m a Mets fan too…unfortunately.
Put him in an international scouting role. He seemed more comfortable doing that anyways.
I think the thing about the Mets situation over the last 5-6 years that grabs me the most is the absolute totality of the fall from grace.
It’s not just the bad contracts, blowing a 7 game lead with 17 to go, 3 straight strikes to Beltran from Wainwright, Jerry Manuel and his razor, David Wright’s Great Gazoo helmet, David Wright’s 10 home run season, Jose Reyes being taught how to ‘run properly’, Beltran trying to take $17MM less to play for NYY, Johan Santana’s shoulder, clubhouse assistants improperly borrowing money from team accounts to gamble, the Madoff scandal, and the associated loans from MLB.
No it’s the way all those things weave together in harmonic tapestry to tell the story of the New York Metropolitans. Like a Navajo blanket. Or something.
Touche. Let that marker sit atop the last remains of anything resembling Minaya at Shea, Citi..etc…
This could be the single greatest comment I’ve ever witnessed on mlbtraderumors. hahahaaha
In 15 seconds you depressed me. I hope you know that. I bet theres more too, i bet theres more…
Dan Wharthen still thinks Ollie Perez can help the club.
And you did it again.
lmfao that was golden
Baby come back. You can blame it all on me.
This is like the United States taking Benedict Arnold back…
Maybe Omar could be instrumental in a Tony Bernazard suite at Citifield? Would be perfect for the mother of KRod’s child(ren?) and her dad. Kurt Radomski could provide juice.
This comment is all over the place. I have no idea what you are talking about.
“I know you helped run the franchise into the ground, and made some horrible financial deals, and made some awful trades, but, do you want a job?”
