Cuban outfielder Leon'ys Martin is now a free agent and has started negotiating with MLB teams, according to Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald (Twitter links). The Cuban defector is now in Mexico.
Earlier in the month, Baseball America's John Manuel reported that Martin's best tools are his speed and defense. The 22-year-old prospect was a bench player for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and is "considered an elite prospect," according to ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr.

He is like Iglesias with the glove and Castillo with the Bat, whats not to like? he is an elite prospect, just a riveting player, such dynamic speed, how much can he hit? well like I said Castillo with the bat, which translates to not so much, I mean he was a bench player for Cuba, but hey he made the team, right?

Bench player at age twenty for a national team that reached the final… doesn’t sound too shabby. Plus, he’s only 22, at that age his tools are more important to MLB than his accomplishments.

Speed and defense? This has Royals written ALL over it.

Not to mention about 29 other teams.

instead of just spewing out a team that will go after him, my assumption is a team without a supplemental draft pick in this year’s draft will be the one to spring the extra money for him. I’m not entirely sure who doesn’t have a supplemental pick this year, Dodgers don’t im pretty sure but they have like zero chance, Cardinals have a legit chance, tigers seem like a strong candidate as they don’t have a 1st round pick. Teams like the Rays and Jays who have supplemental picks out the wazoo seem very unlikely.

He’s currently in Mexico? Go get him Padres!

Does anyone know of a site that has the stats of the Cuban players within there respective leagues? Shockingly, I couldn’t find anything (stat related) on Baseball Reference. The info surrounding Leon’ys Martin is a bit vague and I was curious to see a more.

.492 OBP in the 90 game Cuban season. I don’t care what league you play in, that is impressive.
