Carlos Silva looks like he has earned a release based on his spring performance, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com. Like Oliver Perez, Silva is set to earn $12MM in 2011. Here are the rest of Heyman’s rumors, including the latest on another candidate to be released…
- Heyman hears that Luis Castillo has looked better than the others in competition for the Mets second base job. Castillo's performance and the lack of a standout alternative may reduce the chances that the Mets release him.
- When Rangers GM Jon Daniels asked Adrian Beltre why two of his best seasons came in contract years, Beltre’s response was succinct: “I wish I [expletive] knew.”
- Ronald Belisario is having trouble getting a visa, so the Dodgers aren’t counting on him this year.
- Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik says Dustin Ackley, the second overall pick in 2009, has “a shot” to make the team out of Spring Training.

I don’t think that the Cubs will be releasing a $12MM player because of a spring training performance. The only other time that I can think of that happening was in ’09 when the Tigers released Gary Sheffield but there were other circumstances that were involved in that.

The Mariners are paying the Cubs $5.5MM this year for him, so the release would be of a $6MM (Cots has his contract at $11.5MM) player.
Also, I’m not entirely sure what the answer to this is, but if the Cubs released him now would they be off the hook for his 2012 buyout? If so, that’s another $2MM in savings, effectively meaning the Cubs eat $4MM to release Silva. Then again that buyout confuses me altogether since it’s a mutual option, but meh. Either way, call it $4-6MM in actual loss to release Silva right now.
They’ll shop around for a trade first, to be sure, but I wouldn’t be so quick to claim it’s unlikely. Pretty much every candidate for the rotation spots–Wells, Cashner and even Looper–are all pitching better than Silva. If we’re talking about actual merit-based awards, Wells and Looper or Cashner would get the rotation spots (perhaps Looper because Cashner can slot into the BP and I believe he still has options remaining) and Silva ends up either a long reliever or off the team. How much the $4-6MM loss plays into that I can’t say.

I need to use the word succinct more.

correct answer: “because i wasn’t playing in [expletive] safeco”

The Dodgers haven’t counted on Belisario since 2009.

I still think Ackley needs some seasoning. Could delay clock w/ Mariners not going anywhere as well. But 100 or so more AAA AB’s wouldn’t hurt him or the Mariners as well, so seasoning it is, in my opinion.
Meanwhile, speaking of seasoning, I have a sudden urge to paprika, pepper, butter, oil, salt, and clove a turkey. Anyone want to help?
crashcameron
oh oh, have a feeling i’m going to be diving into the almanacs to come up with baseball’s all-spice team
Dave_Gershman
Good idea. Let’s do it.
Paprika Jones
Oregano Nicholson Smith (joke)
Salt and Pepper Brown
Sugar Robinson
Mint Jacobs
Thyme Gershman

Aren’t paprika and pepper the same thing?
Dave_Gershman
Completely different. Paprika just colors things. Pepper actually has a taste

Anyway they officially unblocked me at my moms so I’m finally back on, span man.

Hallelujah. Well you know I’m not usually hanging around at MLBTR anymore.
You know where to find me

great class beltre has…of course a nerd idiot like jon daniels would accept that as an answer and say “oh heres 6 years and 90 mil!”
Anthony
Yeah, stupid people who actually work in MLB signing players to contracts. Don’t they ever listen to random users on MLBTR?
To be honest, he’s probably been asked that question several thousand times. I would’ve probably answered the same way.
vtadave
Yep, I would imagine your time as a GM is coming soon. What has Daniels done lately anyway?

Kudos to Beltre for using explicit language with his boss and getting away with it.

Why would the Cubs just plain cut a league average pitcher? Yeah, he was awful the last two years in safeco, but he was decent last year and you’re gonna be paying him the money anyways. Pretty sure the M’s are payin around 6 mill, so he would make around that. On a one year deal, thats not a bad price to pay for a decent 5th starter
