Valentine Interested In Owning Part Of Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 28, 2011 at 8:12am CDT

Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine could return to the organization after all. Valentine has spoken with serious financial backers about bidding to buy part of the Mets, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. Valentine says he's interested in the possibility of owning part of the team.

"I'’ve talked to a number of people interested in purchasing part of the New York Mets, but I'’m not formally with any group that is actively pursuing this venture," Valentine told Rubin.

The Wilpon family is open to selling a minority share in the club, as it faces a $1 billion lawsuit and financial instability. When the Mets needed financial support last fall, they borrowed $25MM from MLB.

Valentine was a candidate for a number of managerial openings last year, though he wasn't a finalist for the Mets position. Terry Collins beat Bob Melvin and Chip Hale for the job in November.

Mets fans are really rooting for this Madoff lawsuit to cripple the Wilpons as much as possible and can’t say I don’t blame them.

I wouldn’t bother Bobby, unless the Wilpons agree to sell 51% of the Mets ownership to your group. Anything less, leaves the Wilpons in charge, to spend your group’s money any way they see fit.

I love it. In Bobby V’s first move: “As part owner of this team, I hereby appoint myself Manager for Life”.

Bobby V leading a group to take over a 25%, Jerry Seinfeld takes over another 25% and Mike Piazza forms a group that takes over other 25% (With the Wilpons still having the other 25% but forfeiting controlling rights and Jeff or Fred being in the board). They make Alderson the COO and he brings Billy Beane to be the GM and Ron Gardenhire to be the manager with a staff composed mainly by former players (including Roger McDowell). Four to five years go by and the Mets are celebrating their first World Series since 1986. I know, never going to happen in a million years, but hey, people can dream, right?

Some years ago, Rudy Giuliani was looking to invest in a team. He’s not anymore?

Some guy dressed in glasses and false mustache said he wanted to buy the Mets.
      Was that Rudy or Bobby?
