The Red Sox announced that they designated right-hander Robert Coello for assignment to create roster space for Alfredo Aceves. Coello pitched in both the Dominican Winter League and the Mexican Pacific League this winter after leading Red Sox minor leaguers with 130 strikeouts in 2010.
Coello, a Cincinnati Reds draft choice who signed with Boston as a free agent in 2008, appeared in six games for the Red Sox last year. The 26-year-old spent most of the season pitching for Boston's top affiliates, where he posted a 3.86 ERA with 10.9 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 107 1/3 innings as a swingman.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but what does Aceves (recovering from injury) bring to the table that this guy couldn’t? Seems like there’s quite a few teams that could at least use him for depth.

Aceves is a real live actual MLB pitcher who has proven he can get outs?

Eh, but they seem like they’re virtually the same role. I don’t know what the AAA guy’s contract status was, but I saw from the other MLBTR article that Aceves has two options — maybe that’s it?

Coello is 26 and hasn’t really shown that he can be a decent pitcher even in the minors; Aceves has shown that he can be a good pitcher, in the majors, when he’s not injured.

Yeah. Not a converted catcher with 2 years grand total of pitching at the professional level. Sure, they could have dumped ex Oriole No Chancer Matt Albers, maybe Dan Nava or Michael Bowden..Then those guys probably would have been claimed. Bowden still with some prospect status, Albers may fill in for a team as middle relief and Nava could be a 4-5OF, tho both he and Coello were rescued by Boston from Indy Leagues.

Bad move. I think Coello will actually pan out to be a good middle reliever. Sox should have dropped somone else.

Bad move. I honestly think Coello will pan out to be a reliable mid-relief pitcher. Sox should have DFA’d someone else.

I kind of wish they would have dropped Nava with the hopes that he might get a shot at making a team somewhere.

Wow. I’m surprised they DFA’d Coello. I saw clips of him on Youtube a while ago and I love the movement on his fastball and curveball. With Sandy Alderson picking up relievers here and there, this is a guy that I’d bring aboard. Seeing that he had some starts in Pawtucket, I wonder if he would be able to do spot start in the majors and do some long relief or even be a setup man. If I was Sandy, I’d grab him quick.

The only reason I can think of for choosing to drop Coello from the 40-man is that they’re sure they’d be able to trade him. There’s no way he clears waivers and there should be enough interest to work out a deal with another team.

That’s too bad for Coello. A few weeks ago, we met some members of the Red Sox at a Jimmy Fund lunch event. He really seemed like a really friendly, open, happy guy. I wish him the best.
