Here is the latest from two of baseball's biggest powerhouses…
- Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of The Journal News that there are no player moves on the horizon. "I have nothing I'm involved with right now," he said. "Zero."
- Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino told Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe that his team will have the financial room to add players at the trade deadline, if needed (Twitter link).
- Lucchino also told Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston and Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe that he was informed by engineers that Fenway Park will be structurally sound for another 40-50 years, so there are no plans for a new ballpark (Twitter links).
- Red Sox owner John Henry told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that he doesn't even know how long GM Theo Epstein is under contract, and there are no real discussions about his future (Twitter link). Cot's Baseball Contracts doesn't know how long Epstein is under contract either.
- Boston has paid upwards of $85MM in revenue sharing and approximately $1.5MM in luxury tax, tweets Speier.
- Anyone dreaming of Mark Teixeira for Albert Pujols trade can stop now. The Yankees first baseman told Joel Sherman of The New York Post (on Twitter) that "I've got that no-trade [clause] for a reason. I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to be buried in these pinstripes."
Brad426
If he keeps the Yankees from getting Albert and falls off any he may be buried in those pinstripes sooner than he thought.
OhioSox
Weird no ones knows what Theo’s contract is
Brad426
It’s probably like that episode of “Seinfeld” where Kramer kept going to work at that place where he wasn’t actually employed. Henry doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact that Theo isn’t actually getting paid.
Vmmercan
Are you saying Theo is Milton from Office Space? If you weren’t, start saying it anyway.
Dave_in_Gainesville
Especially since the engineering report on Fenway makes it sound so difficult to set the building on fire….
Fangaffes
Hey, it’s been done (1926).
Yankee_Baal
Maybe Theo did it himself. He doesn’t seem to have a real boss… though it’d be weird.
Steve_in_MA
Sean McAdams of NESN stated tonight, on air, that he “knows” Theo to be under contract through the 2012 season.
Threat_Level_RedSox
Wait the red sox still have money, thank god! I can start the Miguel Cabrera to boston rumor now.
start_wearing_purple
C’mon, where are we going to put him. Try starting a Tulo rumor.
Threat_Level_RedSox
A slow start by ortiz will give this one wind, dont worry though the tulo rumors will start in april.
MaineSox
Wait. Does that mean there wont be any Hanley rumors?
start_wearing_purple
Well I suppose we can put him in right.
MaineSox
But that would officially end the Justin Upton rumors.
Threat_Level_RedSox
We would still need a 4th OF, back up 1B-3B, pinch hitter, back up DH, Upton could get the job done.
costumedanceguy
Papelbon and JD Drew and maybe Kalish or Anderson to D-Backs for Upton. That’s my pipe dream trade.
start_wearing_purple
I’d hit the pipe again if I were you.
Threat_Level_RedSox
They start when the Heat make the playoffs and the people who run the Marlins remember that people in flordia don’t actually know the marlins exist.
David
i’m afraid hanley will be the next ss for the yanks
woadude
Or a can we please have Hanley back rumor.
Guest 7270
Dear Red Sox fans,
there is no way that Miguel Cabrera is being traded to Boston. can we not even start this please? it is NOT going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!! you had your chance to aquire him in 2007 but didnt. thats your problem, not mine. he is under contract for 5 more years and he will be with the tigers for all of them. people who like boston dont just get to snap their fingers and get any player they wan. if i hear the stupid “dice-k and a prospect not named kalish, igleasis, or doubront” thing again, someones gonna get hit. not only is it unrealistic to think that you could aquire him, but to think that you will not have to give up any top prospects is just plain stupid. im gonna stop this before it starts.
Brad426
Just a tip… threats to hit people on the internet aren’t really all that scary.
Pool Messi
It’s my problem that Cabrera wasn’t traded to Boston? You must be confusing me with Theo
start_wearing_purple
… you do understand sarcasm? It never was about to start, it’s a freaking joke.
MaineSox
Apparently out of that whole conversation the only ridiculous one was Miggy; Tulo, Hanley, Mauer, Upton, and Harper is reasonable though.
Threat_Level_RedSox
Ya it’s obvious small market teams don’t want reasonably priced stars, geez some people just don’t know baseball.
YanksFanSince78
From now on I guess we have to use sarcasm disclaimers.
Guest 7268
sarcasm? what are you talking about? are you replying to the wrong comment or what?
Green_Monster
Dude, you have 99_Problems.
nhlegend
I swear to God, I’ll pistol whip the next guy who says “shenanigans”!
Ferrariman
shenanigans 🙂
start_wearing_purple
Well he might have trouble finding you, can you pistol whip yourself for him?
roomwithamoose
oh you mean the place with the wings? haha
Fangaffes
A) It wasn’t a Red Sox fan who said Cabrera to Boston.
B) If you don’t want to read what Sox fans have to say, why come to a Red Sox thread?
C) Stop the “internet tough guy” act. It’s just silly.
Good day!
Threat_Level_RedSox
Im Actually a red sox fan, and apperantly some people did’nt get the joke, im just make fun of the pujols to boston rumors.
Fangaffes
Ugh! It’s impossible to tell humor from derp anymore.
Verlander_Will_Save_Us_All
While I dont fully agree with the way he went about it, I do agree with him in a sence. This was an opening for Sox fans to start talking about trade rumors again. It happened in ’09 when Cabrera had a similar incident and there is no doubt in my mind that they will do it again.
GoAwayNow
Yea we got our middle of the order bat and his recidivism rate is super low. So we’re happy.
wickedkevin
I got 99 problems and you are one.
Brandon
The Red Sox are going to have even more money to spend next year. Ortiz, Cameron, Drew, and Papelbon (all guys I could live without) add up to 35.75 Mil this year and they will all be gone next year. Maybe sign Ortiz for a one year, 5 mil contract and you can work from this:
Pitchers: Lester, Buchholz, Beckett, Lackey, Dice-K, Bard
Hitters: AGonz, Pedroia, Youk, Lowrie, Iglesias, Crawford, Ellsbury, Ortiz, Kalish
Think of all of this with 30mil. plus to spend? Hmmm…
Side note… The big free agents next winter are: Pujols, Fielder, Hill, K.Johnson, Reyes, A. Ramirez, Yadi Molina, Hart, CJ Wilson, H.Bell, and Broxton.
Who would be a good fit for Boston?
Rabbitov
Did you factor in signing Agon long term? Regardless, not being a Sox fan, so not having too much insight I would think catcher and outfield would be top priority for them next offseason.
Brandon
Wow you are right. Let’s say he will make 23 a year. That means the sox will have somewhere between 10-20 mil to spend.
Steve_in_MA
Blackcourt is correct. We have over $50MM coming off the books at the end of 2011, before we pay A-Gon on his extension. There is the matter of needing to extend Buchholz and possibly Ellsbury, so conservatively, I would say $25MM+ would be available without increasing payroll over the present $161MM commitment. Obviously, the Sox’ payroll could and probably will increase for 2012, to maybe $175MM.
woadude
Pujols and get draft pick compensation for Agon
Brandon
I think AGon can put up similar numbers as Pujols now that he’s out of hitter’s hell PETCO, and plus he’s younger and won’t be signed for as long into his late thirties. I choose Agon to be completely honest.
start_wearing_purple
I’d choose AGon too, but I still think Pujols will put up better numbers in Busch than AGon in Fenway. When the choice is between a $30M+/yr HOFer versus a $20M+/yr who’s still one of the best hitters in the game you really gotta ask the question “what else could we buy for that $10M we saved.”
RedSoxDynasty
Let’s begin Math Class shall we: Drew 14, Ortiz 12.5, Papelbon 12, Cameron 8, Scutaro 6, Wake 3, Tek 2 equals 58 million! Add in a 16 million raise to AGonz and theirs 42 million left under the luxury tax! Factor in 6 million in arb raises to Buchholz, Ellsbury, Salty and Bard and theirs still 36 million sitting around with only an opening at DH to fill as Kalish takes over RF and Iglesias/Lowrie at SS. Thus team is locked up for 2 years before Youk and Dicek expire and 4 before Lackey and Beckett expire! 36 million could easily add a major player or two to an already dominant looking team!
woadude
Or we could trade Dice K to the Tigers for Cabrera, it would take some prospects though too, but no good ones, maybe Pimental and Bowden plus Dice K should do it, right 99_Problems?
Threat_Level_RedSox
Fielder would be a great ortiz replacement, but he has to be the larget vegitarian i’ve ever seen.
wickedkevin
Technically the cookie monster is a vegetarian.
Brandon
2012 Best Case: Yadi C, AGonz 1B, Pedroia 2B, Youkilis 3B, Iglesias SS, Lowrie 1B 2B 3B SS, Ortiz DH, Crawford LF, Ellsbury CF, Kalish RF (only 22 years old)
Corey Hart is like a Jayson Werth to me. If Ellsbury plays poorly, I rather move CC to CF and Kalish to left so they can sign Hart to play right. Thoughts?
Verlander_Will_Save_Us_All
I like the Corey Hart/Jayson Werth comparison
dickylarue
The great lovable Carl Crawford refuses to play CF just like he refuses to bat leadoff. That’s your 20 million dollar OF. He tells you where to play him and when to hit him. They’re gonna love him in Boston.
BoSoxSam
Hey guess what: They already DO love him in Boston. Stop whining.
vonhayesdays
good line up providing iglesias and Kalish are what they are supposed to be what are you gonna do with your pitching staff, i could see phils trying to get one of those pieces in the back of bullpen from you it would be good even if they are not but great if they are
BoSoxSam
Yadier Molina?? Ew, why?
bomberj11
Molina>Catching options for the Red Sox right now.
BoSoxSam
Not really….he can’t hit. Yes, he can catch like nobody’s business, but I dunno. The Sox have Salty, and many other good-not-great prospects in the system right now. I just don’t like the idea of spending money on another one-dimensional catcher when we could just give our own guys a shot for cheaper.
Ferrariman
yadi molina isn’t a free agent. Well, technically he is but he has a no brainer option for 2012 season.
AlKelz
If Pujols signs with the Yankee’s , I wonder if the Red Sox would counter with Prince Fielder as their dh to replace Ortiz ? Don’t laugh. Both teams have the money to make that happen.
As an Oriole’s fan , this would be my worst nightmare. A long shot I grant you , but it’s possible .
ugotrpk3113
Anyone else slightly put off at the idea of revenue sharing and somehow these small market teams end up reducing payroll? The Red Sox added 85 mil to revenue sharing and the Yankees should have added easily that much. Plus other teams with larger payrolls…
So there’s about, what, 200 mil in revenue sharing given out to small market teams? Seems lame that these teams don’t increase payroll.
Steve_in_MA
Does anyone else find the revenue sharing disclosure of the BoSox to be very interesting? From my understanding, this fund requires us to deposit 1/3 of baseball operations revenues, i.e., ticket sales. That means that the Fenway gate last season would have been $255MM. Of course, this doesn’t count concessions, product/logo licensing, rental income, TV/Radio/Cable broadcasting fees and advertising. That’s a pretty good number, given that they only have circa 37,000 seats to work with. That’s $85 per available seat, on average, for each and every home game.
Brandon
I’m just saying that with extra money next year if we dont get Pujols or Feilder and Salty doesn’t play up to expectations, then getting Yadi is definitely an upgrade especially because he wont want to stick around in St. Louis when/if Pujols and he calls a really nice game, even if his offense isnt quite there. You have to think Yadi is pretty good at calling games when you look at Wainwright and Carpenter’s last two seasons and Garcia’s last year. I would love for the outfielders next year to be Crawford, Ellsbury, Kalish, Reddick/McDonald, but if Kalish or Ellsbury have a down year… hey look! There is 25 million bucks sitting on the table! And go head and sign Hart to maybe a 3 year, 36-45mil deal (pending on this season).
thomas
brewers resigned hart last yr…
YanksFanSince78
Why are you speaking on Yadi? Who is to say he doesn’t stay in St.Louis regardless of Pujols? Cards have an option on him for 2012 anyway so he probably won’t be avail until 2013 if he doesn’t extend with them.
bomberj11
“I’ve got that no-trade [clause] for a reason. I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to be buried in these pinstripes.”
Your team is also gonna be buried in the cellar of the division next year…
YanksFanSince78
Meth hurts.
Nothing like fans ready to hand up the post-season banners before ST even begins.
