Here's the latest on Kenny Williams' search for power bats, as the White Sox announce their deal with Adam Dunn:
- The White Sox discussed Prince Fielder with the Brewers before completing the Dunn deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal explains how the shortage of available pitching could make it difficult for the Brewers to acquire high caliber young arms in a potential Fielder trade.
- Dunn says he'll DH or play any position, according to Scott Reifert of the White Sox (on Twitter).
- Williams says A.J. Pierzynski and Dunn will accept deferred payment on their new deals to help the White Sox make Paul Konerko a strong offer, Reifert notes on Twitter. Konerko is meeting with the White Sox on Monday, tweets USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

“Williams says A.J. Pierzynski and Dunn will accept deferred payment on their new deals to help the White Sox make Paul Konerko a strong offer”
Coolest thing I’ve heard in a while.

Players who care more about winning than a paycheck.
MeOnTheInternet
Team friendly sure, but a deferred payment is not a salary cut, they still get paid
jwsox
true but it does help the team in the now..it actually can hurt the team down the road but its smart for the players too because it allows them to continue getting paid even after they are gone from baseball
MeOnTheInternet
Yeah, hence my “team friendly” qualifier at the start.
How would this hurt a team down the road though? Instead of having to find X dollars now, you know you need to find w,x,y,z dollars years from now, allowing you to set less money aside now, and grow it slowly.
also, wouldn’t it actually benefit the team, (assuming “the dollar” doesn’t lose all value that is) because $1 in 10 years isn’t worth what $1 is today right?

MeOnTheInternet
nevermind, I see your next statement about the interest obligation, fair enough
jwsox
in terms of how much is defered, lets say of adam dunns 54 million 10 is defered 5 years then paid out over the next 10 after that…conventional wisdom says yes thats only 1 mill per yer but its one mill per year of a player not on your team. Thats one mill that could be used for other players and thats still assuming there is no interest on the money defered if there is it a totally different story
MeOnTheInternet
right, but as long as the interest to inflation ratio is team favorable, that 1 million in 10 years from now costs less than 1 million now right?
kahnives
I was thinking the exact same thing. I think bringing AJ back in the first place would be a big step in PK’s mind. It’s pretty obvious they are in a WIN-NOW mode. I would expect a Konerko signing, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if KW added at least another arm (bullpen or starter)
Red_Line_9
The White Sox are always in “win-now” mode.
snaketrain
until that money comes due later and the franchise is limited once again on how much it has to spend – or at least that was how it went in arizona if we are to believe the current owners.
jwsox
that only depends on the amount the is defered and the interest if any…if were are only talking 2-3 mill a year in dunns case and a few hundred K in AJ’s case it wont hurt the sox lets not forget the sox are a bigger market team than the Dbacks
the_show
It isn’t deferred the contract is just back loaded
Dunn (who’s deal is $12mm/$14mm/$15mm/$15mm)
jwsox
this will sound bad but where is that info im interested..is it on cotts already?
the_show
A buddy of mine got the info I don’t where he saw it

We’re like the Heat!
…only we’ll be good!
rbeezy
still need a bullpen
wickedkevin
Just like how the heat need a bench
moonraker45
and a big man
YanksFanSince78
Meaning you’ll beat up on the Royals and Indians but get beat up by the Twins and Tigers? Let’s hope not.
Matt Manzella
We are not like the Heat. Dunn is the only new player so far.
evenyoudorn
Ha, I meant because guys are structuring deals such that we can bring Konerko back. But I’m glad everyone is taking this so seriously…
Dave_Gershman
Prince to the Rangers for Derek Holland and Robbie Erlin would make sense to me…
Derek Holland, Engel Beltre, and Jurrickson Profar for Zack Greinke would make even more sense…
moonraker45
Prince Fielder in that hot Texas heat would not be a pretty sight
wickedkevin
It would be like watching Ruben Studdard
rbeezy
The Sox and Tigers are going blow for blow here with more to come.
whitesoxfan424
nightengale (via twitter) says they’re meeting with konerko monday
MeOnTheInternet
Here’s an untrue fact, Prince is actually short for Princetopher
cvollbrecht
Brewers are looking for a #2/3 pitcher from Fielder. Switch Broxton for Billingsley and you have a shot.
Billingsley & Loney
for
Fielder
moonraker45
Billingsley for 1 year of Prince? no chance..
bleedDODGERblue
Hate the deal but would make resigning Padilla make more sense..
MeOnTheInternet
How did you get a trade proposal out of my lame joke?
Anyhow, I’ll counter that with:
Jays offer:
MIL’s pick any two of these pitching prospects ( Z. Stewart, C. Jenkins, N. Syndergaard, H. Alvarez, maybe some others )
In exchange for Fielder in 2011, and we DO NOT require a negotiation window, we’ll simply let him audition for the team in 2012.
Vincent
is prince fielder actually available?
what are the brewer’s needs?
what kind of salaray relief do they need?
Is Broxton/Loney for Fielder out of the question?
moonraker45
Brewers need pitching.
bleedDODGERblue
And Broxton would be a pitcher
bleedDODGERblue
How bout.. Broxton, Loney, Belisario, Withrow
moonraker45
You’d trade Withrow for a year of Prince??
bleedDODGERblue
Well, in hopes that we extend him. Withrow doesnt seem to be meeting the potential he was hyped at and we have minor league pitchers passing him up in value now unless I’m getting him mixed up with someone else. A year ago I’d say no. And hopefully Lee’s not a disapointment like Elbert..
thegrayrace
I wouldn’t sell low on Withrow. Broxton is practically useless to the Brewers because he’s a free agent after 2011. Loney’s trade value is minimal, but it would make sense to move him for Fielder. Belisario would also be selling low.
I’d rather trade guys with low upside coming off decent seasons. Guys like DeJesus, Paul, Ely, Monasterios, etc.

Dunn says he’ll DH or play any position….
Looks like 4 yrs and $56MM was the right price to buy Dunn change of tune from “I don’t want to DH.”
Art Wilson
Good luck re-signing Fielder after this coming season when he becomes a free agent. Boras is his agent and he’s going to be asking ridiculous money for a guy who’s going to eat himself out of the game just like his dad.
Red_Line_9
That’s one of the stumbling blocks in a trade fo Fielder. The team acquiring him is likely to want an extension window before completing a trade. If Fielder and Boras won’t talk extension…then it makes it VERY hard for the Brewers to move him…cause who’s going to give up much…especially pitching….for a season of Prince Fielder.
moonraker45
I just don’t see anyone going that hard for Prince even when he becomes an FA.. reports came out that he was looking for 20+ million a year… I just don’t see him getting that much from anyone.
Hoosierdaddy92
depends on whether Pujols gets extended. If Pujols does NOT get extended, Prince would be the THIRD best 1b on the market with Pujols and AGon there.
moonraker45
and who are the big market teams looking for 1b??
Red Sox? Dodgers? … no small market or mid market team is going to give Prince 20+ a year, his weight is a concern, no team will go in to that blindly.
thegrayrace
I agree. Teams will likely look at him like a marginally superior version of Adam Dunn.
moonraker45
I agree, but dunn only got 54 mil…prince wants double
Red_Line_9
“Reports” say that Prince Fielder wants double. Are Prince and his agent going to announce their bottom line publicly?
“Reports” also said that Dunn didn’t want to go to the AL and DH….I guess $56/mil changes some minds.
flickadave
Boras needs to hire Prince a nutritionist and private chef
YanksFanSince78
Didn’t he become a vegetarian? But then again a Apatosaurus was a vegetarian too?
jwsox
carbs carbs carbs….thats why is is soo fat…you cant not eat any meat at all but if you eat a ton of carbs and cheese and drink a lot of non-skim milk…drink a ton of juice(real juice not “juice”) and eat a ton of candy your going to get huge he is better off eating meat
Ian_Smell
I want to see Dunn playing short this season.
bigdaddykool
He’d still have more range than Jeter!
lol
Red_Line_9
You laugh….the man stole 19 bases for Reds one season….so he had ‘dem there wheels at one point.
Funny thing. Today I was flipping through some baseball cards and came across an Upper Deck of Dunns from his Reds days. In the photo he’s lunging out….glove almost on the outfield grass…EYES CLOSED!….for a fly ball. What a defensive wizard…….
Dunn plays the outfield like that auto-pilot doll from “Airplane” landing the plane. Dunn doesn’t always get his landing gear down either.
ThinkBlue10
White Sox are going to be good in 2011.
jwsox
assuming peavy comes back to full strength the sox should easily be the favorite to win the central the twins are going to lose pavano(huge piece for them last season) and probably will lose thome( another big pices for them)
ThinkBlue10
Exactly. That rotation will be pretty filthy.
ThinkBlue10

Matt Manzella
Glad we got Dunn instead of Fielder. Fielder’s kind of a hot head and in far worse shape than Dunn. Trading for then extending him would be far more risky and more expensive. Plus we don’t trade what’s left of our pitching depth.
Matt R.
What about Fielder to the Rays? Hellickson or Davis too high a price to pay? TB is losing Pena (whatever he’s worth…) and Crawford and potentially Bartlet. Not sure who can hit other than Longoria who isn’t a true middle-of-the-order threat.
