The Reds have had preliminary extension talks with the agents for Jay Bruce and Joey Votto, and those aren't the only players GM Walt Jocketty is thinking of extending. Here are the details, from John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer:
- Jocketty says the extension Troy Tulowitzki signed will probably figure into discussions with Votto "to some extent."
- Free agent deals have been more lucrative than Jocketty expected so far this offseason.
- The Reds continue to talk to Arthur Rhodes, who's a Philadelphia target, and Miguel Cairo. Jocketty says he expects to reach a deal with Cairo.
- The Reds are also making progress on an extension with Bronson Arroyo. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe hears (on Twitter) that the talks are hovering around three years and $35MM with some deferred money. Arroyo, writes Cafardo, is "not biting yet."

Great news on Votto and Bruce. I expect Bruce to get locked up this winter.
I say no on the Arroyo extention
Jay
Well unfortunately for you The Reds GM is the person that matters on if we sign Arroyo to multiyear deal or not.
Brian H.
Totally unrelated, but just met with Neal Huntington and he said they are gonna nontender some guys tonight
Dave_Gershman
How did you just meet with him?
Brian H.
I’m at a Pirates ticket holder event and I just went up to him and started talking to him
Dave_Gershman
nice. I think we all expected that though. Jeff Karstens for one…
Emanny
Lock em up, Reds. At least for parity’s sake.
Dave_Gershman
I think Votto should sign a deal between Zimmenator’s and Hanley’s deal.
Ethanator99
5/90 for Votto and 7/60 or something for Bruce?
Dave_Gershman
way too much for both…especially Bruce. Bruce has only had one good season…maybe a Pedroia deal for Bruce and a Zimm-Hanley deal for Votto.

I dont understand the arroyo extension. Picking him up for this year was fine because the young starters still might not fully ready and arroyo will consistently be counted on. But, Homer, Cueto, Volquez, and Leake will hopefully be ready in a couple seasons. After this year, cordero’s and arroyo’s contract will be up freeing around 24 mill to bolster the lineup.
The only reason locking Arroyo up makes sense is if Jocketty plans on trading some of those starters

Yea I don’t understand it either. I’m was all for picking up the option for another season but I don’t think a 3 year extension is the way to go. I love Arroyo’s durability and consistent numbers, but signing him until he’s 36/37 doens’t seem logic given he’s not an ace and we have so much promising young starters.

I think the question is, if not Arroyo then who? Bailey had a great 2nd half but will (or should) be under innings limitations since he’s barely gone over 100 IP. Volquez has had 1 good year and has not pitched more than 70 innings since his rookie year in 2008. Leake had a great rookie season but suffered a shoulder injury in his first full season and has never pitched more than 145 IP in college or in professional baseball. The Red rotation is very shakey and signing Arroyo might prove to be an overpay but is the price they may have to pay to stay competitive because relying on a very young staff with inexperience and health issues is a concern. What you get from Arroyo is 200 IP w/ a 4.00 ERA. His “happy zone” should be right around $10 mil per. If he comes off of his demands then Cincy should do it unless they plan on acquiring someone along the lines of Greinke.

I agree that Arroyo is durable, consistent, and reliable. All I’m saying is if the Reds are counting on him 3 years from now as a producer and ace, then it won’t really matter because we won’t be very good. Homer, cueto, and volquez should have figured it out by then with Leake and hopefully Chapman close behind. I would rather bet cheap on them hoping they pan out and reach their potential than overpay for someone who is good but not great.
YanksFanSince78
Right but that’s what happens when you’re a team looking to win now and you dabble in FA. I think it would be difficult for the Reds to compete in 2011 w/o Arroyo but Arroyo is good enough to get 3 years from somebody. The way I see it, they should suck it up and give him the 3rd year because their window of opportunity to win is 2011 and 2012. I wouldn’t drastically overpay for him but I would give him 3/$30 and if he sucks or you guys fall apart then you’re back to where you were in 2007-2009. But expectations mean you sometimes overpay for results now vs what you will or won’t get later in the contract. Even if Arroyo struggles in year 3 chances are his deal won’t handcuff them.
Jay
Did the Jock Man say Arroyo was the ace of the staff sometime that I missed. I think he is going for the 3 things you mentioned durable, consistent and reliable when offering this deal to Arroyo.

Dammit, that’s like the 5th time I’ve seen “Reds’ rumors” and clicked because I got excited and thought it said “Red Sox rumors.”
jcf313
haha I’ve done opposite, thinking “Red Sox rumors” were “Red’s rumors”. At least the Sox rumors are more exciting at this point though.
sherman
votto was born to be the jays first baseman
Jay
Keep dreaming if he gets a lucrative deal he will be with the Reds for some time at least.
slasher016
Leake did not have a shoulder injury. They shut him down (put him on the DL) due to too many innings. They were just protecting him. Bailey is plenty durable, he just hasn’t stuck in the big leagues. Bailey threw 200 innings in 2009, between Louisville and the Reds.
Jay
I don’t know where that guy got the idea that Leake got injured. I think he had a tired arm maybe… but even that was never proven.
