Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels has some interest in bringing Mark Prior back for 2011, writes Richard Durrett of ESPN.com. Prior inked a minor league deal with the club just before the end of the 2010 season and pitched just one inning for their Triple-A affiliate.
"He's a free agent now and we have discussed him coming back," the GM said. "There’s a level of interest."
Texas could possibly bring the right-hander into spring training to find out what he can do as a reliever. Recently, Prior's agent John Boggs told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that his client has offers from three teams.
Prior hasn't pitched at the major league level since 2006 due to injuries. In his sophomore campaign in 2003, Prior posted a 2.43 ERA with 10.4 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9.
Why is there still any interest in Mark Prior???
Because he was once really good. At minimal cost its worth a shot. It would be another minor league deal so not much at stake here.
Yep. I wouldn’t be opposed to giving him a cheap NRI.
We should develop a corollary for this. Minor league signing of someone formerly great who now stinks and subsequently does not regain formerly good form. So many players could fit… Prior… Dontrelle Willis… we could even extend it to former top prospects who were never even good players like Sean Burroughs.
Especially with Kenny Powers still out there and available.
Yeah, but you’d have to get him a year supply of pine tar on top of his salary.
I thought he was going to sign with Tampa Bay?
Especially with Kenny Powers still out there and available.
Over or under 1 inning in the majors for Mark Prior in 2011?
2 1/3 in Spring Training.
I think the Mariners would be a good fit for him. Cheap, nice pitchers park ect…
Amazing. Never has their been a baseball player who made so much money while actually delivering so little.
I’m Kei Igawa and I disapprove this message.
I’m Barry Zito and I disapprove as well.
Well at least Barry has a ring and has a Cy Young under his belt. Igawa has uhhh, just money.
He’s at least a major league pitcher…
That too
Who’s never been on the DL. And who sat, quietly cheering his teammates on as he was left off the play off roster.
Hey, he’s earned at least some of his salary.
I’m Gary Matthews, Jr. and I too disapprove.
I make a great stir fry for the boys in Trenton.
I’m Kei Igawa and I disapprove this message.
And I’m Carl Pavano…
And you’re bitter and oblivious to what he did in Minnesota this year.
Calm down, Nancy. I’m a lot of things, but bitter isn’t one of them (not a Yankees fan). He had a good year, but he still got paid a whole lot of money to not play for three years in NY is all I’m saying.
And I’m Mike Hampton…
aren’t they still scarred from doing this with rich harden?
Big difference. Harden got actual money. Prior won’t.
aren’t they still scarred from doing this with rich harden?
I feel like I saw this exact same article last year.
How hard does he throw now days?
Low 90’s.
Reportedly sitting around 90 to 91
if Prior throws another pitch in the majors, i will eat Steve Bartman.
I hear he tastes like goat.
Eating Steve Bartman gave Chan Ho Park diarrhea
Denny Neagle and Jason Schmidt here – we’d like to join this discussion.
Let’s calm down – no reason to not give the guy a shot. Not like they are giving him A.J. Burnett money here.
Hey look, Kyle Farnsworth and Darren Dreifort want in too!
I see I’m in the minority here, but I wish Mark Prior well. If he wants to keep trying, I hope someone gives him a chance. Give him credit for still wanting to pitch-he has made more money than he can spend, he’s gone through at least two shoulder surgeries, he really could walk away and call it a career. Make fun if you want, but it isn’t easy going through rehab. He’s done it multiple times and he still wants to pitch.
I hope someone signs him.
I hope he makes it back to the majors, I want a good comeback story.
With 500k being the standard buyout, what does 65k mean to a team?
What’s crazy is…after all these years of inactivity…he’s still only 30.
