Links for Sunday, with winter meetings right around the corner….
- Mariano Rivera hinted that he may retire when his two-year pact with the Yankees is up, though he left some wiggle room. Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News has the details.
- The Pirates will focus on pitching at this week's winter meetings, writes Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Biertempfel names Aaron Heilman, Jeff Francis, Brandon Webb, Justin Duchscherer, and Chris Young as potential targets for Pittsburgh.
- ESPN.com's Buster Olney (Insider required) wonders if the Orioles could be a match for Adrian Beltre.
- The Athletics will be focused on free agents, rather than trades, at the winter meetings, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The orioles would be a good fit for Beltre, and they seem to have money to spend. I just don’t see Beltre signing with a team that isn’t really a contender. I think he goes to the Angels.
Yeah, Beltre would be a match for the Orioles but MacPhail likes to say “grow the arms, buy the bats” yet he only makes low ball offers for those bats so really it is not a question of is Beltre a match because of course he is, the question is would MacPhail make him a legitimate offer or low ball him like he did Dunn.
i don’t think he legitimately thought he was gonna get dunn with that offer. I bet the o’s get reynolds instead he is more cost controlled, albeit worse
Looks like it is going to happen very soon.
Exactly ! Waiting for the ‘breaking news’ that Beltre was offered a 2yr/9mil deal by McPhail.
If I remember correctly, God told Rivera to retire after the 2003 season (and several times since then), so I don’t know if we should really take him at his word. He will continue pitching as long as he is effective and having fun.
Adrian Beltre + A’s = Happiness for me.
And sadness for me, as a Ranger’s fan.
Beltre+matsui=playoffs
Nah, no it doesn’t. Rangers would still have the division and the AL East/Central would have the Wild Card.
Not if the Rangers lose Cliff Lee, and the A’s somehow improve their putrid offense.
I have this strange feeling they’ll still be playing “Enter Sandman” in yankee stadium for more than 2 years.
I hope so. Mo can pitch till he’s 50 for all I care. He’s the greatest closer in the history of the game and I’m glad he plays for my Yankees.
Is this Hank?
your in no way associated with the nyy just another fan your not important sorry
Adrian Beltre to the Angels sounds good to me.
I would like to the Pirates to get Webb or Young the most. Francis I would be fine with, though they already have Maholm.
I think getting either of those two would be a hell of a steal for the Buccos (should’ve never given up on Young in ’02 for Matt Herges, who in turn didn’t even make the roster out of Spring Training). Young would’ve been a nice arm in the rotation during the past 6 or so years, just saying… I even wouldn’t mind them taking a flier on Justin Duchscherer, if he’s not hurt he’s great, just a big if on the hurt side of things…
Mo will not retire until he passes Hoffman.
Maybe Hoffman will never retire himself.
But no one will let Hoffman close again after this past year with Milwaukee…
a bad team will who want experience
both will be pitching 2 yrs likely and retire
Obviously Beltre doesn’t simply want money, I’ll give the guy that much. No way anybody equals, let alone tops, 5 years/$64MM.
Your right. Only other team I think would even come close to match would be the angels. I think its just up to him where he wants go. He would have signed already if money was the only factor.
A-Gon deal is dead! This will increase the stock of Beltre, now the Sox are in the mix for him. The A’s and the O’s are doomed. All the big free agents look like their going to big market teams. It would be nice to see Beltre go to the A’s or O’s. My guess is the Sox offer him 5/68.
A’s are out of the Beltre deal! Looks like the Sox and the Angels.
Beltre has become a must for the Sox. Werth just signed with the Nats, the Gonzalez fell through, Beltre is going to get big bucks! Beltre’s stock has just gone up again. It now or never for the Orioles to make a big offer.
