The Tigers designated righty Zach Miner for assignment to clear a spot for Victor Martinez, according to a team press release. Miner had Tommy John surgery on May 28th, so a non-tender was expected on Thursday anyway.
Miner, 29 in March, posted a 4.24 ERA, 5.5 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, and 0.9 HR/9 in his four seasons with the Tigers. He had a strong 56.1% groundball rate in '07, but it dropped off in the two following campaigns.

If Zach can regain his groundball ratios, he might be a good fit for the Pirates.

I will never forgive him for coming in and promptly blowing game 163. Glad to see him go.
FunkyTime
Agreed. I also can’t forgive Leyland for that. Porcello was dominating in that game, then Leyland pulls him early for the unreliable Miner … horrible decision.

I remember it was Rodney that gave up the winning run in that game, not Miner.
tigers22
You are correct in the fact that Rodney gave up the winning run. However, the entire complexion and momentum of that game changed when Miner was brought in to replace Porcello and he then promptly gave up a home run

it’s looking more and more like he’s going to be non-tendered now. if he’s not on the major league roster, it doesn’t make sense for anyone to even give him a major league contract, especially because he hasn’t pitched for a whole year. i can see a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, but really not too much better than that.

I think that the Red Sox should sign him to a minor league deal, have him start at AAA and he can be a spot starter/insurance kinda option. Plus, you could kinda say the Sox got 2 draft picks and Minor for V-Mart signing with the Tigers!

Haven’t they taken enough Tiger minor leaguers?
progmatinee
Being a Miner in the minors is better than being a minor in the mines.

Who will the tigers send down when they grab a corner outfielder??brennan boesch?

The suspense is killing me,who is the next on the tigers signing list, smalls ?

Switching back to moves that actually impact the Tigers next season. I wonder if DD has considered making a play for Colby Rasmus. Who thinks a trade of Jacob Turner/Rick Porcello, Dan Schlereth, Drew Smyly, Ryan Strieby, and Brennan Boesch/Casper Wells is realistic with Mo’s request for a “kings ransom”? One elite starter to contribute this season possibly and replace Carpenter after next season possibly, (doubt they can afford BOTH Pujols and Carpenter at 15MM), two quality lefty bullpen arms, something they desperately need, and two power hitting cost controlled OFs to replace Ludwick and Rasmus.
