Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest Rockies buzz…
- The Rockies are interested in Javier Vazquez. Vazquez joins Jake Westbrook, Jon Garland, and Hiroki Kuroda as pitchers of interest for the team in case they are unable to re-sign Jorge de la Rosa.
- GM Dan O'Dowd described the team's plans at catcher as "a fluid situation," but added, "We are absolutely prepared to give Chris [Iannetta] every opportunity to get over the hump." Re-signing Miguel Olivo hasn't been ruled out, but it sounds like the Rockies will be giving less playing time to Iannetta's catching partner in 2011.
- Notable minor league free agents, from Baseball America's Matt Eddy: Luis Ayala, Brad Eldred, and Kaz Matsui.

If Olivo resigns, that would be incredible.
AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs
-ly stupid of them.

Javy won’t do it. The Nats want him, he wants to be in the NL on the East Coast. Him going to Colorado would be a sudden 180-degree shift on the mentality he’s had his entire career.
Brandon Woodworth
I agree. Want to know how Javy gave up 20+ more runs while giving up 30+ less hits from 09 to 10… the big fly. 12 more homers than 09 in 10 with 50 less innings. Get him out of Yankee Stadium to put him into Coors Field is insanity.

not everyone can play in NY…

Not everyone can play MLB in a sandbox.

Vasquez had a number of games where he gave up big innings and not just in NY. Too many 3 run homers early in games. Girardi also became very frustrated with him and treated him unfairly towards season’s end. He allowed him to take a pounding on several occasions and in one outting, pulled him after 4 2/3 innings with a 1 run lead because he had men on base. Vasquez didn’t help his cause by pitching scared. I was rooting for him all year, but to be honest, he never looked comfortable pitching in NY. He became a nibbler and attempted to fool hitters rather than go after them as he did with Atlanta the year before.
In his first tour in NY, Vasquez was lights out the first half of the season, got hurt, tried to hide it, and finished poorly. The loss of velocity this time around says to me that there’s something amiss again. He claims there’s nothing wrong physically but I’m not so sure.

So pardon me if I’m missing something, but if Iannetta is going to be the primary catcher, what is the Rockies’ interest in Victor Martinez? As a first baseman?
Yucavich
I would guess as a part-time catcher and also spelling/platooning with Helton.
Tim Dierkes
I think them getting V-Mart is a pretty long shot.
Yucavich
This too. Ha.

We are apparently avoiding type A free agents anyway.
bleedrockiepurple
Tim, you are correct that its a long shot for the Rox to get V-Mart but everyone is clearly only reading the second half of that statement.
GM Dan O’Dowd described the team’s plans at catcher as “a fluid situation”

Please let someone else deal with Vazquez. I would much prefer Kuroda any day.
cookmeister
what about Mike Napoli? rockies were rumored to have liks to maybe looking into a trade. he can catch and play first to give Helton off day or whatever as well..
tomymogo
Oh Rockies, why, why would you sign a flyball pitcher that just lost 5 miles per hour in his fastball, and had awful control this year? And to play in Coors field of all places, god help them….
Ted
I was going to attempt a defense of Vazquez playing at Coors until I looked up his career numbers. 4 starts, 7.00 ERA, 6 HR in 18 IP. That’s a lotta home runs despite the sample size.
Mark Townsend
It’s probably just posturing. I don’t think their interest is too overwhelming, but why not throw your name in the mix in case they miss out on other targets and Vazquez is still looking for work a few weeks down the line.
