Links for tonight as we remember Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson, who passed away today at the age of 76. MLB.com's Marty Noble penned a great article today looking back at the life and career of the universally beloved skipper.
- The Mets announced that GM Sandy Alderson will interview in-house candidates Wally Backman, Terry Collins, and Chip Hale in California this weekend, writes Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. Earlier today the Mets sat down with Bob Melvin and Dave Jauss in New York.
- Giants GM Brian Sabean says that the club will soon make an offer to Aubrey Huff and will "certainly be in discussions" with Juan Uribe, writes Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News.
- Expect the Rockies to call Kevin Gregg's agent, tweets Troy Renck of The Denver Post.
- Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols said that he hopes to work out an extension with the club before Opening Day, according to the Associated Press.
- Jonathan Maurer, the agent for Brandon Webb, says that several teams have already contacted him with interest in his client, according to the Associated Press. We learned yesterday that Webb would like to return to Arizona but that seems unlikely.
- After turning down his end of a mutual option today, Scott Podsednik is still in talks with the Dodgers, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
- The Denver Post's Troy Renck says that Jorge de la Rosa hasn't been presented with an offer from the Rockies since last winter when he instead opted to take a one-year deal in arbitration.
- The Mets dropped five players from the 40-man roster today including Jesus Feliciano and Omir Santos, tweets Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

Sparky was a true icon who gave real meaning to the term “Big Red Machine” and gave Reds fans everywhere something to be forever proud of. Rest in Peace – and thanks for some of the most amusing baseball quotes ever.
Dave_Gershman
Not to mention some plain old original quotes from his heart…My favorite
It doesn’t cost anything to be nice to people – Sparky.
Great quote if you ask me. I was barely born when he was still managing, but seems like the perfect manager for your favorite team. Great guy, Great Baseball guy, he will be missed.
Alex Ramos
NED PLEASEEEEEEEE! dont sign pods to a deal we need POWER not another cheap juan pierre!
Dave_Gershman
I think Brandon Webb would be an exceptional fit for the Phillies.
Brandon
I think brandon webb will be a waste of an investment. he just doesnt have it anymore. goodluck to him though, i hope he can recover, but that seems impossible after following him the last couple years. -dback fan with mixed emotions.
Brandon
okay i have a question for a baseball fan with some decent knowledge of the dbacks.. who do you see as potential relievers for this team? closer? left feild? 1st base? and the other starter? lol i know its alot but im a die hard dback fan that wants to talk baseball with someone. thanks.
Alex Ramos
1st base? Left? Closer? All i say is the Dbacks are screwed again this year GO DODGERS!!!!!
Dave_Gershman
“All i say is the Dbacks are screwed again this year ”
So the Dodgers weren’t screwed this season?
Alex Ramos
its a work in progress my man remember when the giants finished under 500. in 08′ look where they are now……….CHAMPS even though i hate to say but we did suck this year but the dbacks were no better
Dave_Gershman
I will say, Jerry Sands deserves to be up next season. I wish the Dodgers were in better shape, but then again, as so I wish the same for the Snakes.
CaseyBlakeDeWitt
I’ve only just started hearing about Sands this year. You seem to be an expert on just about every player. How good do you think hes going to be?
By the way, is their a single team that you root against?
Dave_Gershman
Thanks man! I love every team!
Sands to me is actually very good. He has good power potential and is a natural fit at 1B I think he’s going to be on the MLB Network Saturday night.

its okay you can hate on the dbacks all you want, but i got respect for the game of baseball so im not gonna sit here and talk trash about the dodgers goodluck this year to you. Go Dbacks!

Brandon Allen at 1B. Left Field is questionable, it might be Parra but I doubt it. They will probably either sign a cheap LF, or put Allen in LF and re-sign LaRoche. There is a good chance that the D-Backs will sign Bobby Jenks in my opinion if he gets non-tendered. He is really good friends with Joe Saunders and Barry Enright. Also expect the D-Backs to sign a lot of relievers to minor league deals hoping for a Clay Hensley in the rough or something like that. I could see Mike Lincoln maybe being that guy. I would like to see them sign Brandon McCarthy or John Maine as well.
Their pen as of right now is really questionable and my guess is only Demel, Carrasco, Gutierrez are the only sure things on their roster to be assumed a job in the pen. I think Brian Sweeney could be in the mix. Heilman, Fuentes, Jenks, Wood, would all be good fits and I say Jenks signs in AZ if non-tendered and definetly see Towers spending money on the pen and rotation.
Also keep an eye on Jarrod Parker, you will likely see him in AZ next season. Hudson, Enright, Kennedy, Saunders, Parker…I like it.
Brandon
Thanks a lot I pretty much agree with everything except Parra wont be in left, no chance.. Towers said he wants more power in left. And Heilman wont come back most likely. But I think me and you think alike in terms of what their offseason will look like. But thanks for the info span.
rfffr
I think they should hope the Dodgers don’t sign Podsednik. He’d be great for left field. I think they should resign Church after nontendering him to be the
4th outfielder and ditch Parra.
Ferrariman
well i could see a couple of things. Allen Craig is a very capable left fielder/first baseman with a solid bat. Jason Motte was probably the cardinals best reliever last season and could be a closer on most teams who don’t have an allstar closer already. Motte+craig+brendan ryan for stephen drew? any takers?
rfffr
You can have Reynolds but not Drew. Drew is not available
Ferrariman
why would we want reynolds? he isn’t worth motte, craig, ryan and cardinals already have freese. actually, i wouldn’t trade anyone of those guys for reynolds except maybe ryan if we got another shortstop.
Brandon
The Dbacks wont trade Drew this offseason unless its the Rick Porcello deal with Detroit which isn’t happening. Why would they get Motte when they can go after a proven closer this offseason and keep Drew? Not happening. They have 15 million roughly to spend and they will spend about half of it on pitching, and the other half on a LF/ bench.

I personally think closers are the dumbest thing to to spend anything more than 6mil/yr for. Their are also not many ops closers on the market except soriano and he will probably get k-rod money. Motte makes league minimum, that offers tons of flexibility. I’l do you one better, take motte out and add prospect eduardo Sanchez.
rfffr
Jarrod Parker will debut in 2011 so a 5th starter isn’t a necessity unless they don’t trust enright.
Brandon
Towers said he will at least start the season off in triple A but could get called up in June.
rfffr
Well they could use a few different guys in the 5 spot like Carrasco, Kroenke, maybe Mulvey, etc until Parker is ready.
rfffr
John Maine wont be playing in 2011. I think they learned from Webb.
jeenyus245
hahaha John Maine, what a joke
J.D. Iglesias
Do it, Cardinals. Extend Albert Pujols. May he never reach free agency in his career.
The_BiRDS
Im thinking Albert will get something around 8 year $210,000,000 with bonuses and incentives. Deferred.
PookieGonzales
I was about to laugh at the joke then i remembered we were talking about Albert.
start_wearing_purple
Whatever the final total is I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t sign the third $200M+ contract. As much as I have this awesome fantasy about seeing Pujols in a Red Sox uniform, I honestly think it’s much better for baseball if Pujols remains in St. Louis.
Stl_Great
It’s funny when people think Albert will sign somewhere else…
cardsfan1988
Good to see Pujols is wanting to sign an extention this offseason…finally all the people that say Albert doesn’t want to be a Cardinal can shut up and stop saying that he is going to bail and go for the biggest contract possible…because obviously if he was going for the biggest contract possible, he would go and hit FA, but obviously he wants to stay a Cardinal
Just_MLB
with the yankees out of the picture. how many teams are in play for albert that will top 25 mil + per year?
55saveslives
Huff 2 yr / 12 mill
Uribe 2 yr / 8-9 mill
Then a LF and we’re done!
Ferrariman
Their is not a chance that huff only gets 2yr12million. At least 3/30.
vtadave
3/30? We’re talking about Aubrey Huff here right? Tell you what, if that happens, I’ll text a picture of my junk to Jenn Sturger.
Ferrariman
U happen to check his performance this season? He is easily going to get a 3yr deal from someone.
Johnny
NO way Huff is getting a 3yr deal & at 10mil a year???
55 had it right at 2/12 and that is still on the high side.
PabloFTW
Not only was last year one of his best in his career, he hasn’t shown much for consistency in his career and is 35 already. Also remember he had no offers prior to the Giants calling him. I doubt he’d secure a 3 year deal very easily if at all and the Giants would be fools to offer him 3/30.
rockstar!
You’re actually trippin. He’s 33 and it was NOT the best year of his career… it was his 3rd best year for OPS, 4th best year for HR, 5th best for BA.
cubfan4life
Still not 10M a year worthy but you could probably give him a 2 yr deal at 13M total. Thats double what he made this year. Who knows? He liked SF a lot he may even go a little lower.

55saveslives
Nah, Huff made a speech before the W.S. to the team saying he doesn’t know how much longer he can play. Plus he fired his agent so he will be dealing straight up with the team. And he WANTS to be back. A deal that works for both sides can easily be reached.
The_BiRDS
Man you sure seem to think you know everything about how the offseason works.. why dont you just let people discuss things instead of you creating a answer for everything.
Brandon
Scott Podsednik to the Dbacks anyone? (If the Dodgers dont bring him back)

I’ll be the happiest man ever when they lock up Pujols for life.
