Scott Boras says he has met with Angels officials to discuss his free agent clients more than once this offseason, according to Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com. The agent represents Adrian Beltre, Jayson Werth and Rafael Soriano, the Boras client the Angels appear to be targeting most pointedly. Though Carl Crawford remains the Angels’ top free agent target, it appears that they can afford both Crawford and Soriano.
Though Boras has presumably been in contact with most or all of baseball's 30 teams since the World Series, the Angels figure to be of particular interest. They have multiple offseason needs and the resources to address them with free agent additions. Boras, meanwhile, has a suite at Angel Stadium, which is relatively near his agency's Newport Beach headquarters.

Package Deal… Beltre/ Werth/ Soriano
5 Years/ 225 Million.
Dave_Gershman
Or just sign Derek Jeter to a 5/yr 225MM deal.
Motor_City_Bombshell
It is what he wants, after all.

Boras and angels always been good buddies. Angels will get either werth or Crawford. They need a power outfielder. And beltre will come to his sences and go to the A’s. It’s going to be a good division race next year. But I still get a feeling bout oaktown. They just need a couple bats and I believe they can do it
okojo
The Angels and Boras haven’t been good buddies for a period of time. The Angels were so pissed off at Boras in how he handled the Teixeira sweepstakes, they refused to negotiate with him with his other clients in the 2008/2009 off season, like Manny Ramirez.
I think most GMs look at Boras as a necessary evil. He hardly is straightforward and honest. He basically is constantly being deceptive and creating an environment of heighten anxiety so he can get the best price for his clients, and of course himself.
Boras has negotiated many bloated and constricting contracts, with his coup de grace the Barry Zito contract.
cookmeister
the Angels refused to negotiate for manny ramirez was because they did not want manny ramirez on their team period

So what you’re saying is that Boras is good at his job. We should all strive to be as good at our jobs as Boras is at his. Not necessarily to use his tactics, but I’d love to do something as well as Boras represents his clients.
pedroiayouk
except that Boras is known for lying, deceiving, and even cheating to be “good at his job.” Most people would consider Boras unethical. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens also strived to be good at their jobs.

Honestly, even though he’s a Boras client, I think Beltre is the Angels’ for the taking, should they try to sign him…he’s made no bones about wanting to play in Southern California again, and I think the Angels have an even greater need at third base than they do in the outfield. This post says the Angels have the money to sign both Crawford and Soriano, but I’d rather see them sign Crawford and Beltre, and give Jordan Walden a chance to close, rather than dishing out a big multi-year deal on Soriano…let’s face it, the Angels have never had much luck with big money deals for relievers…it scares me a little.

And if they miss out on Crawford, I actually would prefer if they didn’t go after Werth… he’s not a bad player, but he’s not going to be worth the 5/90 or 6/110 he’s likely to wind up asking for… is he going to regress as badly as Jason Bay? No, because I think he’s a much better all around player than Bay, but I’ll bet he regresses once he leaves Citizens Bank Park, nonetheless…I think Fenway suits him, and that’s where he’ll probably wind up.
If the Angels do miss out on Crawford, I’d rather see them approach the Red Sox about dealing Mike Napoli for Jacoby Ellsbury. This deal makes tons of sense, and it fills needs for both teams. Then the Angels can use the money they’re saving to throw at Beltre and maybe a left-handed reliever, like Scott Downs.
pedroiayouk
Napoli for Ellsbury! You have got to be kidding me! Ellsbury is worth 5 times as much as Napoli. Napoli is a terrible defender and has no baserunning skills. He doesn’t hit for average and is only good against lefties. Ellsbury is good defensively and on the bases. He hits .300 against righties/lefties. Also, Ellsbury is under contract cheaply for 3 years and is 27.
The reason they let VMart leave is because he was a bad defensive catcher. Why would they replace him with another bad defensive catcher, all while giving up Ellsbury???
scotty
Napoli’s a better defender than V-Mart was, would produce more HR’s than V-Mart did and would more than likely split time between catcher and 1B in Boston (assuming they don’t bring back Beltre). Youk would split time between 1B and 3B.
Napoli established career highs in XBH (specifically HR’s) and would more than likely hit well over 30 Hr’s in the bandbox that is Fenway. Those catchers are hard to come by. Boston also claimed Napoli off waivers last year and had a rift when they misdiagnosed Ellsbury.
I’d say right now Napoli for Ellsbury is a pretty reasonable trade. If the Angels added in a minor league CF it would make even more sense, along the lines of Jeremy Moore. But make no mistake, Ellsbury’s value is as low as it’s going to get right now, and he’s certainly not worth more than a catcher that would hit 30+ HR’s a year.
BK
No! Napoli + Prospect For Gordon Beckham and let Beckham play 3rd. Sign Crawford, bring on a cheap reliever.
Done and Done
Ferrariman
unless the prospect is REALLY good, that deal doesn’t happen.

KEEP DREAMING!
Chris
In regards to Boras being evil and all… If an agent’s job is to represent the best interests of their clients and get them the best deal possible, then Boras isn’t evil… he’s just a damn good agent. I think there’s this perception that Boras is some devil who takes innocent young ballplayers, who are only in it for the love of the game and have an unwavering loyalty to their hometown team, and he twists them into soulless money-grubbing monsters who only answer to the highest bidder. I’ve got news for you… players who are like the first half of the sentence above wouldn’t sign with Boras to begin with. As a player, you know what you’re doing when you sign with him.
And as for the bloated contracts (Zito, Holliday, etc…), don’t blame Boras. Blame the owners and the teams willing to spend that much! Boras merely understands and is able to navigate market demand. If no team was willing to pay that much, then he wouldn’t get it. Of course, then the owners would be accused of collusion, but that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms…
Motor_City_Bombshell
Very nicely put. If the owners weren’t willing to ante up the dollars that Boras and his players want, then there wouldn’t be overloaded contracts to begin with.
pedroiayouk
I think you’re missing the point where he cheats and makes a lot of very unethical decisions. Sure, he gets great results, but he doesn’t quite go by the rules.
SoCalAngelsFan75
Anyone else find it eerie that the devil keeps at suite at Angel Stadium? Anyway, I hope we land Crawford. Beltre and Soriano would be welcomed additions but not for the price Boras will be asking for. Definately don’t want Werth. Horrible numbers with runners in scoring position…which is one of the things the Halos struggled at last season. Why add fuel to the fire?

With the Yankees post George austerity movement, the Angels are poised to make the biggest moves of the off season. Look for them to sign Crawford, Beltre and Soriano. Hal Steinbrenner is a egg headed numbers cruncher. The days of the Yankees overspending is over. Long live Arte Moreno.
SmackSaw
Werth is awful.
vtadave
How so?
SalvadorM
Bell for Napoli and prospect
vtadave
Isn’t Jay Bell retired?
scotty
I think you mean Bell and a a really good prospect for Napoli. Heath Bell is under contract for one more year and isn’t exactly cheap. Why would the Angels send the Padres a catcher under contract for multiple seasons that just hit 26 HR’s for a 30 something year old closer and throw a prospect on top of that?
BK
If the Angel trade and impact player (Napoli) for a relief pitcher I will s#$t in a bag and light on fire on home plate.
Brian
@ Jake Humphrey.. With that statement you could also say a pimp is good at what he does as well… All Boras does is drive up ticket prices, food prices and make the game more about money than baseball… It’s gross..
GMwannabe
Napoli for Ellsbury??? i assume that is a joke
Doug
napoli for paplbond sound like a good trade
Doug
rangers have no money to sign lee angels have more money then they do crawford going to the angels
kdub53
heres the deal
i would keep nap at any time at any level..
the problem is…if there is ANY reason that he wont be played the the fullest extent…then what is the reason for keeping (which is bs, but there are politics in bball 🙂
I think that we can use a closer but it would be better to sign a guy like crawford and a power 3rd like beltre… (there are others too)
We need more power to mix in with the rest of the speed that we are looking to aquire…from there we should work on the pitching…forget the whole cliff lee run…we should go after a good 2-3 starter…then work the pen from there…
webb could be filthy if he is in fact back to health? 🙂
jt24
the halos dont need another starter they already have a pretty impressive rotation of Weaver, Haren, Santana, kazmir (when healthy), and Piniero. The angels need to focus on signing cc and some lefty relievers (1 or 2). then we go and bolster the offense with a beltre if needed or get a lights out closer via soriano
kdub53
yea thats true…but kaz is shakey as hell…healthy or not and has been since we picked him up.
I would love to see him straighten out though…
we do need a few great veteran relievers to compliment some of the new additions that are looking good (such as waldon)..
cc for speed and beltre who had a good average last season, and could hit 25 homers more then likley…
KB
No way we give up Nap for Ellsbury. Spare me.
angel31
I say the Angels sign Crawford and Beltre. They trade KEndrick and another player to the Padres for Heath Bell and try to extend him cuz he is cheaper. Then really get crazy and trade Abreu and Sign Dunn as platoon 1B and DH with Morales
kdub53
Dunn would be a good power sign, but he doesnt realize he cant 1b like moralas and would only be a dh to us
we still need to unload a ton of players like rivera willits etc
I would love to say bye to brandon wood but for some ol captain mike loves him lol
