Andy LaRoche and Delwyn Young elected free agency today after clearing outright waivers, MLBTR has learned. LaRoche, Young, and Zach Duke were designated for assignment by the Pirates ten days ago, with Duke being traded to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
MLBTR pegged all three as non-tender candidates on November 2nd, so infielders LaRoche and Young are just reaching free agency a few days early. Both former Dodgers prospects struggled to hit at the Major League level, but they're on the right side of 30 and can play multiple positions.

Yay for the Dodgers prospects that failed with other teams!!!
Only a couple more years until Tim posts the same thing about Blake DeWitt.
thegrayrace
and Carlos Santana…?
Smrtbusnisman04
I think you forgot James Macdonald too.
Pirates fans are pretty excited to see him in the 2011 rotation.

These guys will be heavily sought after..
Smrtbusnisman04
Are you Andy Laroche’s brother?
He was horrible last year! He shows no upside in power or bat speed, I’m really glad I won’t see him ground into anymore inning ending double plays.
Young, on the other hand, will be sought after as a pinch hitter.
vtadave
Uh pretty sure your sarcasm detector is on the fritz…
Smrtbusnisman04
My sarcasm is functioning better than Andy Laroche’s hand-eye coordination.
But with sarcasm, they will be heavily sought after.

rootman1010
who will have a better future in the MLB? i’m guessing it’s young given his versatility and ability to switch hit…
coachofall
Laroche will wind up in Oakland
eviola1
Every Oakland fan says every free agent is gonna end up in Oakland. Quiet.
Dave_Gershman
Not really. A’s fans are actually some of the most knowledgeble fans out there, and I like the idea of Andy LaRoche on the A’s, but I like him on the Orioles, Marlins, Jays, Indians, or Royals on a minor league deal as well.
coachofall
actually not an A’s fan sorry Jay guy! Reference was to the fact that Billy Beane has been trying to acquire this guy for the last 5 years. Now he can have him for free
Smrtbusnisman04
coachafall is correct. Beane inquired about Laroche back in January, but the Pirates demanded both Ryan Sweeney and Gio Gonzalez in a trade.
Because back then, he actually showed some upside in power and contact.
jaysfan702
I wouldnt want to play for the pirates ether
Breeno
And nobody wants to play in Canada, most players actually enjoy their time in Pittsburgh, the most livable city.
white angus
pittsburgh is awesome and PNC Park is awesomer. hopefully the FO sticks to their plan and does it the right way.
Smrtbusnisman04
Octavio Dotel didn’t want to leave Pittsburgh!!
Jake Humphrey
Someone will take a flier on LaRoche’s upside. He was a top-20 prospect in all of baseball at one time. I’d take him with the Braves if he’d accept a MiLB deal.
Dave_Gershman
Completely agree…He’ll definetly get the chance to win a job and may get many chances.
T Morgan
I like this idea too, if he pans out then great, but if not, there isn’t much risk involved.
rootman1010
laroche seems like a dallas mcpherson minus the injuries… solid third base prospect that can’t make it work in the majors
Gumby65
I’d like to see Delyn Young back in LA to take Podsenik’s place (not necessarily in the starting lineup, unless they plan on going into 2011 w/o a new true LF) to split time with Gibbons
rootman1010
when will trayvon robinson be ready to hold down a starting spot in the LAD outfield?
thegrayrace
2012 at the very earliest. Probably 2013.
stl_cards16
I’d like to see the Cardinals take a chance with Laroche. With not knowing how Freese will bounce back from injuries, Laroche seems like a good insurance policy.
CJ Montiel
Completely agree! We were interested in him last season before we realized he didn’t look like that big of an upgrade over what we had. LOL Go get him Mo!!!
skoz
I’d actually rather the Cards see if Young shows them flashes…
ThinkBlue311
They say Trayvon Robinson is one more season away from getting to the Big’s.
Ian_Smell
I really hate to see DY go. He was one of my favorite players and it’s too bad that he couldn’t stick as a starter. He is a great pinch hitter but does not belong with a glove.
Breeno
I hope to see Andy get a spring training invite from the bucs, such a great guy…his bro can come too!
Chris
Said it last time LaRoche came up on here, I’ll say it again. I think my Indians should at least think about him for a 1 year deal. At least until they feel Chisenhall is ready to take over there. Just sign him as a stopgap, he can’t be any worse than the three headed monster that was there last year…
gamehawk
They both will end up signing 1 yr deals somewhere. Too many teams out there will see the upside to a bounceback year.
YanksFanSince78
I would like the Yanks to try and sign Young to a minor lge deal. They should give him a shot to win the 4th OF position and if he doesn’t then stash him in AAA because or system has very little depth in terms of OF’ers. The fact that he can play 2B as well is a plus.
zartan
Andy LaRoche is a bad baseball player. Bad as in bad.. not “Baaaad”.
