The Mets have formally interviewed five candidates for their vacant GM position – Sandy Alderson, Rick Hahn, Allard Baird, Logan White, and Josh Byrnes – so far, but COO Jeff Wilpon indicated that a hire wasn't imminent according to Dan Martin of The New York Post. Here's what Wilpon said yesterday in a letter to fans…
"[The GM candidates] are intelligent, creative and passionate about winning … They conveyed their honest assessment of our franchise and discussed how we can move forward on our pledge to give our fans the winner that they deserve. We are continuing our search and expect to hire our new GM in the next few weeks."
ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider req'd) hears that team president Saul Katz is urging the Wilpons to hire someone with "experience and stature" to help restore faith in the team's fanbase. Alderson, who Ben Nicholson-Smith profiled yesterday, certainly fits that criteria. He has been considered the favorite for the job since it opened.

So in order to get a new GM they have to acquire Rickie Weeks?
Seriously though, both parties are interested…Just hire Aldlerson and get the ball rolling. The later they hire, the harder it will be to get their off-season started, which has already started for all teams that have a GM.
Tko11
Hhaha Rickie Weeks. I agree though get Alderson already! The Mets always make things so complicated.

You should also add that all the good managers will be gone.
Dave_Gershman
That’s a really good point. 100% true. They need to get the job done.
roberty
I think they mean they want to hire Rickie Weeks as their new GM.

Alderson is certainly the choice that would most restore credibility with the fans and help them hold on to season ticket holders (which is important since they might have trouble fielding a genuine contender until 2012). Unless they’ve really been blown away by one of the other candidates they ought to just go with him as soon as they can.
Dave_Gershman
And it not like it should be a crazy decision…As far as I know, Byrnes and Baird were responsible for the Diamondbacks and Royals unsuccess. Rick Hahn is a guy who really intriuigs me kind of like AA and Jed Hoyer. White has done a good job with the Dodgers, and then Alderson who we all know. So it should really be a case of Hahn, White and Alderson.
Between Hahn and Alderson, who do you want? The expierenced Baseball guy, or the Sabermetricky young inexpierenced though, Hahn…
Gerald McLaughlin
I’d prefer Alderson, since he’s developed his own sabermetric guys before, and probably can again.

‘experience and stature’ bothers me when I hear it coming from Sual Katz. Thats sounds like another way of saying, ‘style over substance’. I would have prefer he said ‘ get the best person for the job available’.

Of course it will take weeks to hire a GM. The playoffs take forever with all the offdays and they can’t make an announcement during the World Series.

I still believe the Mets should trade Ike Davis for Matt Garza.
nymets4581
Yeah and maybe in the process we should trade David Wright for Ervin Santana
BravesRed
I got a better one. David Wright for Milton Bradley.
CitizenSnips
Got any ideas for 1B then?
gursk1989
how about pena and his gold glove for 1 year and 5 million? Even Lyle Overbay, who had a better batting line than Pena last year, to a one year deal. After that, the Mets may actually sepnd some money on an awesome first baseman… Pujols, AGon, or Fielder.
CitizenSnips
Meanwhile Ike Davis was one of the best defensive 1B in the league this season and Pena’s ever dropping BA sunk below the Mendoza line. Plus people are saying Davis is probably another Overbay so why spend more money on him while Davis is cheap?
gursk1989
To get Matt Garza. I love Davis, but he isn’t Adrain Gonzalez. The Mets won’t sign AGon if Davis is here. This way, they could have their number 2 with Garza and a monster with Gonzalez. I was just saying sign Overbay or Pena as a one year place holder until the better options become available.

Right on the money! Davis has three things going for him.
1. Davis has shown ability with the bat and glove. With potential to get better
2. He has become a fan favorite
3. As you say, he’s cheap and under team control for a few years.

why is it so unbelieveable for the Mets to do this deal? I don’t get it. Ike is a good player, but he isn’t great. Garza is a solid number 2. It works out for both teams. Pitching beats hitting. The Rays have a lot of it, while the Mets don’t have so much. If everybody stays healthy and hits as they should, they would be fine with somebody like Pena or Overbay for a season.
nymets4581
Because Matt Garza is essentially Mike Pelfrey. Ike Davis has 30+ HR potential, he’s cheap, he’s an amazing defensive player, is payed minimally and is under team control for quite a while.
gursk1989
huh sorry, but no. Pelfrey isn’t anything special. He doesn’t miss bats. He is a number four guy in a good tram. Garza has posted very solid stats in the AL east, and keep in mind that the AL is a much tougher league… better hitters and the DH, and the AL east is ridiculous with Toronto, Boston and New York. Saying Pelfrey equals Garza is foolish.
Look at 2010-
Pelfrey- 15-9, 3.66, 1.37 WHIP, and a rather terrible 1.66 k/bb.
Garza- 15-10, 3.91 (in a tougher league and division), 1.25 WHIP, and a 2.38 k/bb ratio.
I love Pelf and Davis, but there are going to be better options at first base soon, and having Garza in citi field would be awesome.
nymets4581
I’m sorry but Ike Davis is one of the cheap, talented assets our team has and we shouldn’t go out and just give him away. And what says Adrian Gonzalez will even want to sign with us. By keeping Ike Davis we get solid, cheap production for quite a few years.
gursk1989
I’m sure Agon will go if the money is right, especially because he is very underpaid currently. And I never said lets give him away, lets trade him for another young, rather cheap, electric, no hit stuff pitcher with quite a bit of playoff experience. This team needs an edgy attitude, and I believe Garza would deliver that.
Ricky
guys we dont even have a gm yet…cmon

Honestly Jeff Wilpon… I’d have more respect for you if you name yourself GM… but if you hire Alderson you really won’t have a say in things at all
