Wednesday night links, as Daniel Hudson attempts to keep his NL ERA under 2.00….
- David Ortiz tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports that he thinks Carl Crawford will sign with the Yankees or Angels this winter.
- Joe Girardi doesn't expect Alfredo Aceves or Damaso Marte to be back with the Yankees in 2010, tweets MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.
- The chances of lifetime Angel Scot Shields returning to the club's bullpen next season are "less than remote," says Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Whether Scott Kazmir will be a part of the Angels' rotation also remains to be seen, DiGiovanna writes in a separate piece. MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith examined the team's 2011 rotation yesterday.
- The Astros are looking into the possibility of signing Barret Loux, but haven't made an offer yet, according to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).
- Carlos Guillen would like to play second base for the Tigers next season, write Jason Beck and Alex DiFilippo of MLB.com.
- Jack Moore of Fangraphs looks into the outstanding numbers Geovany Soto is putting up this year. Earlier today, we looked at Soto as a possible candidate for an extension.

2010… not 2011.

Typo. Thanks for the heads-up.

Angels have something good going with Jered Weaver and Dan Haren. They need to dump Kazmir, and keep Santana because he has pitched good for the Angels In a comeback year. Of course not to his fulest extent but I would take that, idk why Angel fans are complaining about him. Joel Piñiero is a solid #4 pitcher, and Napoli and Mathis could both be traded for pitching to make way for Hank Conger. Nap should net a nice return. Maybe Shaun Marcum?
Sean W
Not sure why the Jays would need Napoli, though. Maybe the Jays will trade John Buck for Weaver
moonraker45
John Buck is a FA
Sean W
Yeah, just making a point that trading Napoli for Marcum didn’t make sense
moonraker45
Why on earth would the jays trade Marcum for Napoli? Marcum is a cheap and controllable 2/3 starter, he’s worth way more then Napoli.

Guillen BETTER play second base for the tigers. For what they are paying him he better bat .280 minimum and win a damn gold glove.

I don’t understand why aceves didn’t have back surgery in May when he originally got hurt. It’s a bulging disk!! not a muscle tweak. At the very least he should have opted for the surgery after he reinjured himself trying to rehab it. He would be strong enough by next season, now, after wasting several months, he still hasn’t had surgery and may not be back to 100% for next season. Hopefully he can recover from this.

Shouldn’t almost every team be looking into Loux? Or at the very least, any team that didn’t sign a high draft pick. I get it, the kid is an injury concern. I got to see him pitch against Jungman at UT; he’s got pretty good stuff to pitch like that while injured.
bjsguess
Shields is done. Has been done for several years. He was a great Angel but that arm has nothing left to give.
If Kazmir doesn’t cut it early on in 2011 he moves to the bullpen. Be the most expensive middle reliever but maybe, just maybe, he can recapture a little bit of his former self.
redsandyanksfan
Ollie Perez would like to have a word with you about him not being the most expensive middle reliever…
Dave_Gershman
Kerry Wood is in line behind Perez.
bbxxj
Is Perez even a middle reliever? Seems like they have designated him as the bulpen waterboy and/or random middle infielder you pitch a few innings in a blowout.

MLBTR tells David Ortiz we think he won’t get more than 2 years.
TheFenwayFaithful
You know, I was against signing Ortiz again. But then when I thought about it, if the Yanks are going to get stuck with another 4/$100MM for Jeter, I guess its not that bad to pay a premium for our guy who’s earned the respect and been the face of the organization. I just have a big problem with the fact that for that same $12.5 we could grab a guy like Vlad and spend the other $4-5MM bolstering the bullpen.
PL
So did David Ortiz answer who out of Swisher, Gardner or Granderson will be traded by the Yankees this winter? They cant sign Crawford unless one of them goes.
Henry Castellanos
I don’t really care about CC right now, if Grandy can stay healthy and continue his good hitting we don’t need Crawford when the yanks have a 20-20 man.
alphabet_soup5
Last 2 seasons (including this one)
Granderson: .248/.323/.451 47 HR, 31 SB
Crawford: .305/.360/.469 30 HR, 102 SB
The Yankees don’t need him, but Crawford is a clear upgrade over Granderson. From August 1- present, Granderson is hitting .241/.325/.482 … good hitting? Seems to fit right in with his numbers above.
