Here's a look back at some of the analysis and reporting MLBTR's writing team produced this week..
- This week we brought you up to speed on a pair of non-tender candidates: Dodgers second baseman Ryan Theriot and Mariners second baseman Jose Lopez.
- Brandon Webb's agent emailed MLBTR to make it known that his client is seeking an incentive-based contract with a significant base salary. The contracts of Brad Penny, Rich Harden, Ben Sheets, and Tim Hudson will be used as starting points, says Jonathan Maurer.
- This week we unfurled the "5 Surprises" series. The Dodgers, Rockies, and D'Backs were all chosen to kick off the new feature.
- After the season the Elias Sports Bureau will label free agents as Type A, B, or leave them without a label. MLBTR readers can keep track of how players will be designated thanks to Eddie Bajek's projected Elias rankings.
- We picked up our "Free Agent Stock Watch" series this week with examinations of Giants outfielder Pat Burrell and Orioles reliever Koji Uehara.
- Is your favorite team out of contention? Don't worry, we got you covered. Now you can track your team's bid for a higher draft pick on our reverse standings page.
- Tim Dierkes broke down the arbitration-eligible players for the White Sox, Indians, Tigers, Royals, and Twins.
- Oakland's Trevor Cahill could be in line to receive an extension, writes Luke Adams. Meanwhile, Ben Nicholson-Smith says that Jon Lester's deal will be a model for Clay Buchholz's extension, if Boston decides to go that route.
- On Wednesday Tim conducted his weekly chat.
- Our look at 2011 rotations rolled on with previews of the Twins, Cardinals, Mariners, Rays, White Sox, Red Sox, Orioles, and Blue Jays.
- If you're unclear on how September trades work, we have a post explaining everything you need to know.
- Howard Megdal wrote an entertaining recap of the 1982 trade deadline.
- MLBTR readers voted on a pair of phenoms, which late-season addition will perform better, the White Sox's acquisition of Ramirez, and discussed Adrian Beltre's next contract.

You guys are doing a great job with the original content. Much appreciated!

Trevor Cahill is underated IMO, dude deserves an extension i just wish the Brewers could produce some good young arms besides Gallardo.

Jake Odorizzi is a sure thing. It sure would have been nice if they had signed Dylan Covey.
Anyway, I think they are the dark horse for ZachGreinke is he were to be traded. I suppose something like Lawrie, Odorizzi, Jeffress, and Gamel might get things started.

Greinke won’t be traded, at least not for more than a year. Frankly he’s what Moore can point to and say “see I’m not a total screw up.” If the Royals really have any shot of making a run on the division with some of what’s coming up from the farm, they need 2009 Greinke.
Dave_Gershman
Well their system is the best in Baseball, and Dayton Moore has a lot to do with that…But trading Greinke will only make the system better. I know you are a Royals fan — Can you imagine Jesus Montero in our system with Hosmer, Moose, and Myers among the 4 lefties and Giavotella and Robinson? I don’t think he will be around post contract and trading gim (and keeping Soria) might only make them a better team in the future…
Although this is a reason why I wont Greinke…He could be a great veteran presense to Monty, Lamb, Duffy, and Dwyer…Plus, he is a great pitcher, it’s just his contract will be up soon and if they aren’t going to re-sign him (they should) it might not be worth keeping him. This is what I think for example..
start_wearing_purple
They’re better off trading Soria to get what they want for the farm.
Though I wouldn’t call the Royals farm system the best in baseball… don’t even know if top 5 is right. At the very least Tampa Bay and Oakland are definitely ahead of them.

And everyone who knows the minors would agree. Not saying you don’t know the minors, I’m just saying.
I wouldn’t trade Soria. He is one of the best closers in Baseball and closrs are very hard to find, and he is also under contract (cheap contract) until 2014.

No, but no offense, I’m guessing you don’t follow MILB.

Dave_Gershman
But in all fairness my good online friend, I’m not old enough to drink, so you should have pieced that together dawg!
start_wearing_purple
Your grammar is not up to it’s usual standard… I was half wondering if you were drinking and typing. Note to self stop watching Sherlock Holmesian stuff… makes me think I’m perceptive. That said, I did see the movie Machete today… violent, hilariously insane and over the top acting by everyone not named Danny Trejo, I highly suggest it.
I do follow the MiLB and have seen massive strides in the Royals farm but I still won’t call them the best in baseball, let alone the best in MILB history.
Dave_Gershman
Well when I said “do you not follow MILB” — That was a joke…I know you know your Baseball whether it’s MLB or MiLB. And you obviously have your opinions, and if you think the Royals farm system isn’t the best in Baseball…Thats obviously your opinion…But seriously, many say that there hasn’t been as good of a trio (Moose, Myers, and Hosmer) in any organization in a long long time. Plus you add in the 6 lefties and the lower level Royals, plus the Naturals in NW Arkansas — Bottom line, the Royals organization is shaping up to be the best if not one of the best in Baseball. It’s just been great drafting by Dayton since ’07. But I really do think you need to believe in their organization as the best in Baseball. Although if you’re trying to score points with Grant Green or Stephen Parker…I understand!
My grammar, well I’m not exactly Mavis Beacon or Albert Einstein…I’ve always told you this…I pretty much only know Baseball…I can’t spell, I’m not good with words like perceptive…I’m just a Baseball guy as you know.
The A’s and the Rays, well they are probably, I’m saying probably in the top 5 with the Royals and Jays. I also really like the Indians farm system. There was a really good podcast from John Manuel and Jim Callis that I urge you to check out…Seriously it’s good. I’m going to name a sleeper for you to check out, Kyle Petter. John Manuel really likes him in the Indians organization…2010 34th rounder and is pretty much a poor mans Billy Wagner or Tim Collins if you will. Has good stuff. I really like those 5 that I mentioned as the top 5 in Baseball with the Royals, A’s, Jays, Indians, and Rays in that order. The Astros is also in that mix. They’ve completely turned their organization around to what is a newly very impressive system. Also a big fan of the Tigers recent draftees but I wouldn’t say they are even top 15. The Yankees also have a good thing going with Betances now looking like a future ace. Anyway, just pointing a few things out. But always good talking to you man…Still surprised you watch those kinds of movies. I always thought of you as a disney type of guy!! (joke)

I’m far too tired to respond to everything, so I’ll be brief but annoying. My crack about your grammar was more of a back handed compliment, tonight you were off making me suspect libations.
As for the Disney movie crack… Sir I’m dishonored, I shall meet you on the field of battle. Joking. Still I think Walt Disney to be one of this country’s worst heroes.
Dave_Gershman
Maybe, but again…I have no idea what the word liberations means. When we talk, it has to be easy words, like good, bad, yes, no, chalupa, ceiling, prospect, Moustakas, and absolutley….Yes?

Has moose been giving a position yet? reports I read said he still might not have the skill for third. And I would wait on Myers. He hasn’t even played past high A and a lot can happen with catchers. Good example: Myers and Jarrod Salthalamacchia have almost the same high A stats in Salty’s 20 yr old year and he is having a lot of trouble getting acclimated to the majors. Catchers are very hard to project. And I like Hosmer’s BB and K rates but do we know how he hits lefties?
Dave_Gershman
Myers isn’t a future catcher. Moose is a 3B. Hosmer hits lefties.
jwredsox
Thanks. And my bad not realizing Myers wasn’t a catcher.

Cahill’s K/9 is too low. Oakland needs to see him strike out more guys to justify it.

Doesen’t matter when he has a sub 2 ERA, and good groundball rate that is going to thrive with the A’s great defense.
