The Cubs have designated Mitch Atkins for assignment, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (via Twitter). The DFA was part of a series of moves in Chicago, as the team also placed Tyler Colvin and Geovany Soto on the disabled list.
Atkins, who turns 25 next Friday, appeared in five games for the Cubs this year. The right-hander struck out a batter per inning, but recorded a 6.30 ERA and allowed 18 baserunners in just ten innings pitched. Atkins had more success for Triple-A Iowa, with a 3.63 ERA over 106.2 IP.

Haven’t heard about Colvin since the day before yesterday. Hope he is doing okay.
start_wearing_purple
Well according to what I read from the article he’s supposed to be in the hospital for several days for observation.
harrypav
They took the tube out of his chest, so he’s doing really well, all things considered.

IMO,
Cubs should not go after A. Dunn and spend millions.
They should make a hard push for Jacoby Elsbury ( BOS) and make him their everyday center fielder. Shift M. Byrd to Right field and put Colvin at First Base. Trade Fukudome.
This way we will have lots of speed at the top of the lineup with Elsbury and Castro.
These kids in the pen will be much better next year. The killer M’s ( Marshall, Mateo & Marmol)
Wrek305
Marmol needs a pitching coach to teach him control.(Rothschild doesn’t count) He need a real pitching coach
BlueCatuli
Despite having a 6.06 bb/9 he has a 15.4 k/9 and 33 saves in 37 chances. Given that his team has the 4th worst record in the NL, he would likely have more saves. He is very comparable to Brian Wilson and he was the NL closer. Carlos Marmol is one of the few people the Cubs can actually be excited about.
clark182
Don’t you think if the Cubs were considering Colvin at First Base, he would have been getting some time there over the past 30 days?
aaron b
Why the hell would we put a 785 ML OPS guy at First base? At some point you need to score runs to win.Bet you’re a fan of Juan Pierre and Cecil Espy as well?

For what corresponding move to eb made? Any AA callups?
harrypav
Esmailin Caridad was moved off the 60-day DL and optioned to AA. He had been on a rehab stint there, through the playoffs.

Jacoby Ellsbury and a prospect for Hak- Ju Lee, Jay Jackson or Chris Archer ,Kyler Burke, andWellington Castillo
Jntg4
That’s a horrible trade! An overrated CF when we already have Byrd for our top minor league SS, our top pitching prospect, an excellent pitcher, a good Outfielder, and our top Catching prospect? Even with the extra prospect going to the Cubs it just isn’t wort it at all. Might as well throw in freaking Brett Jackson if you are going to be that dumb!
Chris
Dumbass, I was saying 2 or 3 of those guys. Your not going to Ellsbury for nothing. Castillo, Archer somebody, Castillo Burke and somebody ect. it would be along those lines. Please refrain from calling anyone dumb before you know how to comprehend a statement.
Jntg4
Why the hell do you want Ellsbury anyway? Then what happens when B-Jax is ready? And you said: Lee, J-Jax OR Archer, Burke, AND Castillo! What you said meant Hak-Ju Lee, AND J-Jax or Archer, AND Burke AND Castillo. I’m not a dumbass, you just had horrible grammar and phrased it wrong, making you the dumbass.
clark182
The Soxs are down on Ellsbury. They’re making comparisons to him and his injury to Nomar. I would avoid including Lee, Archer and Castillo in any trade unless your getting back a sure thing like a Adrian Gonzalez. I like the idea of Ellsbury and would offer up Colvin as a starting point.
BlueCatuli
I would add Wellington Castillo in a heart beat. He won’t be anything but the back up with Soto there. Colvin has way more upside than Castillo in the Cubs organization.
clark182
You may think Colvin has a lot of upside, but if they could use him as a piece to acquire Ellsbury, I’d be all for it. An outfielder that hits .250 with a .316 OBP is much easier to acquire via than a 40+ SB leadoff hitter. As for Castillo, in the evaluation of him, if he provides better defense, but not necesarily the offense of a Soto, I would see what kind of return I could get from Soto in the offseason. The Cubs are notorious for selling low on players. Colvin, Soto and Marmol should be dangled in the offseason.

Hendry keeps getting rid of the wrong players.. Ramirez Soriano, Zambrano. Those players need to be DFA
The Big Clayboski
Great idea! Then the Cubs can foot the $50 million bill while they play for someone else.
Chris
Atkins never really got a shot and has had some amazing years in the minors. What I saw was he had descent stuff. I could see him latching on to a team and being a LRP or a spot starter.
aaron b
The cubs should have DFA’d Nady and Koyie Hill. Those guys are going to be off the 40 man roster next month anyway.
Why lose a fringe prospect for nothing?
I’m starting to be really jealous of the well run front offices around baseball.
BlueCatuli
Considering the Cubs just named Koyie Hill the player rep at the union meetings, I’d have to say he will most certainly be on the 40 man roster. What is so bad about having a back up that is above average defensively, only hits .240, and costs less than $1,000,000? His job is to give Soto a break once or twice a week, not be the next Johnny Bench.
aaron b
Since Koyie Hill is a career .217 hitter, I’m not sure who you are alluding to? Anything that Koyie Hill can do. Wellington Castillo can do better. And he can do it for 400K.
I’d rather spend Koyie Hill’s 1 Million dollar salary on an upgrade elsewhere. Or in the draft. Even Latin America.
aaron b
Good lord some of these suggestions are moronic.
Get a brain morans!!!!!!

I would tend to agree with you about Randy Wells. The Cubs have some pretty good young arms in the minors, Jay Jackson, Chris Carpenter, Casey Coleman and I would even throw Austin Reed into that mix despite his youth. I would put the Cubs window officially reopening for being serious contenders again at 2013. Given his recent resurgence, if Zambrano finally got his act together a staff of Zambrano, Dempster, Carpenter, Jackson, Coleman wouldn’t be something I would frown at, now. The Cubs minor league system has vastly improved and with a budget like they have, building a contender from within and retaining it and adding pieces should not be a difficult thing to do.
