Angels Notes: Reagins, Scioscia, Matsui

By Zachary Links | September 12, 2010 at 5:28pm CDT

Let's take a look at some Angels-related tidbits..

  • Angels GM Tony Reagins blames himself for the team's underachievement this year, writes Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times.  Reagins says that he will evaluate the club from the top to the bottom in an effort to turn things around this winter.  He also stood behind his acquisition of Dan Haren, saying that the pitcher will help the club beyond this season.  Haren's contracts calls for him to earn $25.5MM in the next two seasons and has a $15.5MM club option ($3.5MM buyout) for 2013.
  • Meanwhile, Halos skipper Mike Scioscia says that the club needs only minor changes, and not a complete overhaul, heading into 2011, according to MLB.com's Evan Drellich.  Scioscia believes that the return of missing pieces from this year such as Kendry Morales will provide a major spark for the Angels next season.
  • Scioscia would not go into depth about next season's plans and would not directly address the potential return of Hideki Matsui.  The veteran, who has hit .268/.358/.448 with 19 homers in 2010, will be a free agent after the season.

They need to get back to winning by speed and defense. Fix the bullpen as well.

Bullpen is a freaking disaster. Can’t tell you how many games were lost from the 6th inning on. Hopefully, the new crop of Kohn and Walden stick. Jepsen and Bulger are both significantly better than they have pitched (when healthy).

But the bullpen is just a piece of the puzzle. The entire team (exceptions for Weaver and Hunter) are hugely underperforming. This team either needs players to play to expectations or be completely made over.

Can’t you say the same thing about Brandon (Dead)Wood as well?

If Matsui had hit like he’s been hitting lately all season, I could see the logic in keeping him around. Unfortunately, it took him so long to get going that he spent half the season as a waste of space on the roster.

I remember thinking when the Angels signed Matsui that they just gave away Mike Napoli’s position. If the Angels are going to use a roster spot for a DH-only player, it should be Napoli and Napoli only.

How about sign FA Carl Crawford to play LF. Sign Manny Ramirez to play DH. Trade Rivera for a bullpen arm. Matsui and Shields will be gone and would pay for Ramirez contract. 2011 lineup would be great.
    1-Crawford LF
    2-Kendrick 2B
    3-Abreu RF
    4-Ramirez DH
    5-Morales 1B
    6-Hunter CF
    7-Napoli C
    8-Callaspo 3B
    9-Aybar SS

    1-Weaver 2-Haren 3-Santana 4-Piniero 5-Kazmir or Bell or Palmer.

how could you possible want manny ramirez on the angels man…
      hes terrible
doesn’t play hard offensively or defensively..
bad attitude…everything I would never want on my team, even in his BOSTON hayday that I must point out was the last time he was good. Look at him with the dodgers..
