The Indians acquired catcher Luke Carlin from the Pirates for a player to be named later, tweets Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The backstop had signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in mid-January.
Carlin, 29, has big league time with the Diamondbacks and Padres. This year in Indianapolis he hit .239/.331/.317, a big dropoff from his work in the Pacific Coast League the previous two years.

These are the types of moves that perplex me. The Indians already have Carlos Santana and Lou Marson, both of whom younger and more talented than this guy, yet they want to bring in another guy who’s pushing 30 at the same position… Is this a Columbus Clippers playoff push move?
Moebarguy
Santana is out-the-year. Doesn’t hurt to have backup catcher or Triple-A depth.

Pirates really didn’t need anymore. The Pirates need to stop tradin players for PTBNL. They traded Brandon Jones, Brian Bixler, and now Luke Carln for PTBNL. Pretty soon the Pirates won’t have any minor leaguers. When are the Pirates getting th PTBNL in the Virgil Vasquez deal? They traded him in April and still didn’t gt anybody

Within six months…so in October or before.

Someone has to catcher at the minor league level this is a filler depth system situation period. The tells me that Toregas may well be added to the big league club when the rosters expand. This move is no different than the last couple moves the indians have made.

Wyatt Toregas is injured and done for the season. IIRC he suffered a major groin injury and was carried from the field the day after Marson went back to the majors after Santana was injured.
TERRENCE

Unfortunately, the Pirates are going to leave quite a few prospects out there for the Rule 5 draft next year. Not every person can be on the 40-man roster, so you will probably see a few more PTBNL or cash deals by the Pirates before the end of the season. I just wish instead that they would trade a bunch of marginal prospects that they may lose for one really good prospect. Also, to Moebarguy’s point, the Pirates aren’t really using him at AAA and the Indians could use him for depth. Plus, Luke calls a good game. A win for the Indians.

The indians have about 30 guys that will be available guys to maybe be concerned about Jordan Brown / Rob Bryson / Goedert / Hagadone / Josh Judy / Graham / Pino / McBride / Drennen these are the ones that concern me the most.

The above post as far as the rule 5 draft goes

Carlin suffered an injury in June guarding the plate. Bad sprained ankle but the guy wanted to play through it/his numbers suffered for it but he has improved offensively over his past two seasons and has a cannon for an arm. He’s better known defensively/would be a great back-up catcher for the Indians.
