The White Sox might consider dealing for Roy Oswalt, tweets Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. At the same time, GM Kenny Williams & Co. are leery of a switch from the National League to the American League.
Williams may have some convincing to do as Oswalt reportedly does not want to play for the White Sox. One has to think that the ace could be swayed, however, as the ChiSox present Oswalt with a chance to win and the opportunity to team up with friend Jake Peavy. Back in 2008, Peavy was open to joining the Astros in order to play with the three-time All-Star.
It appeared that the White Sox would be sellers just one month ago. However, the club may look to buy after rallying in recent weeks and climbing their way to the top of the AL Central.
tmo564
i don’t get it. didn’t oswalt say he would use his no-trade and not come here?
oremlk
According to an unsourced Ken Rosenthal report. Even if it’s true, we don’t know when that information comes from; it may have been before the White Sox vaulted themselves back into contention.
Things can change.
Adam
Didn’t Oswalt already say he would decline a trade to the Tigers and Sox?
Luke Georgia
Didn’t Oswalt say he’d refuse a trade to CHW, anyway?
Gregory L. Vince
Pretty sure Oswalt said he wouldn’t approve a trade to the White Sox.
tigers22
Haha… go ahead and waste your time Kenny, while we go out and get Haren
evenyoudorn
You guys already stole second place right out from under us…
tigers22
Typical Sox fan… middle of the pack all year, finally work your way up to first for one day and start talking like they own the division. It’s mid July, don’t act like you just grabbed first in September.
evenyoudorn
Wait, is this Rick Porcello chiming in from the minors? On behalf of all typical Sox fans, I apologize for hurting your feelings. Maybe next time we spot you guys a 10 win head start, you’ll take better care of it.
tigers22
haha you guys are hilarious. Because your boy Gordon Beckham is doing a whole lot better than Porcello this year huh? Dude should be in the minors himself… but KW is content with just letting him suck in the bigs.
OD
Typical Detriot fan… Someone talks a little smack and you play the innocent victim, all the while conveniently forgetting Detroit fans are the worst I’ve ever met at running their mouths. Don’t act all squeaky clean on the trash talking because the Sox have put together a great run. We all have no idea who will end up winning the division, but the fact remains..you’re in second, we’re in first. The standings at the end of the season matter, but don’t act like you didn’t enjoy your run in first place while it lasted, today’s our first day atop the division. We’re enjoying it.
tigers22
haha yeah, im playing innocent victim over an internet message board. ok man… whatever you say. congrats on apparently being really good at running your mouth.
Nate Pave
You have the arguably the worst pitching staff in the AL central and have no shot at winning the division. Your average starter ERA is about 5.00 and the only pitcher on your staff that could pitch for the Sox is Verlander. How do you possibly think that you have any chance at competing when all you have is a few good hitters (won’t argue with that)? I can’t wait until they restore Detroit back to a “natural” state so we do not have to be anywhere near that dump of a “ghost” town.

Yes we fear the brilliant wheeling and dealing of the tigers, seeing as you guys have a whopping one wild card birth the last ten years.
Ferdinand
hah… Haren is a 1st half pitcher. go ahead and get him
lug
The guys splits are night and day. First half most years he is incredible (not this year) second half he is average. He is putting up these numbers in NL West not sure what they would like in the AL Central but I am thinking not as good.
michael wilson
Really you’re cracking on Kenny?? Dont forget he is a World Series winning GM! And peavy and oswalt are good friends. Remember last may when peavy said im not going to the white sox? Until I hear Oswalt come on tv and say Im not going to chicago…then im keeping out hope. Get oswalt and berkman in a package n id be happy
syn
He’s good friends with Peavy. I bet it’s all posturing.
dro03
Peavy said the same thing last year too, I believe around the same time. Then he reconsidered after the Sox started winning at around the same time. Its seems to be an eerily similar situation here. I have two concerns though, first that he’ll fare the same as Peavy who hasn’t had too much success here, and second that we will give up too much for him. Regardless I trust Kenny Williams, we got a first place team to show for it.
JST1331
Ok…. a little bit ago he said he would refuse to sign with the white sox what the hell?
aap212
If baseball writers are Team America characters, Jon Heyman is Matt Damon.

Matt Damooon.

Hey…um…..just throwing this out there…..didn’t Oswalt say he wouldn’t go to the White Sox? I mean if no one else is going to bring it up, I will. You know what I’m sayin’?!?!? :))
tmo564
everyone has brought that up.
scottblanks
Right, which would make this sarcasm.
tmo564
haha, touche!
anonymice
Did you read the article? Or any of the comments?
MARTIN
I’m guessing he was being sarcastic.
anonymice
You can never tell with these gosh-dern internet people!
ThinkBlue10
clueless much? im sure he was being sarcastic.
Joe the Fake One
Isn’t Peavy done for the year with injury? How can you “team up” with a guy that isn’t pitching?
whitesoxfan424
Teaming up at an all-you-can-eat restaurant, after the game.
damnitsderek
Well, it’s good to know that Carlos Silva finally has a cross-town eating buddy.
oremlk
Oswalt is under contract through 2011, like Peavy
B
I’d rather see the Sox add a bat to the line-up. Aramis Ramirez anyone? I don’t see them giving up the farm for Dunn or Fielder. Aramis to 3B, Viciedo/Kotsay at 3B. But I’d prefer to see more Viciedo than Kotsay.
MARTIN
You mean viciedo/kotsay at DH right?
B
Viciedo/Kotsay at DH, yes. What do you think about the Sox pursuing Ramirez?
Soxman17
I think I just threw up in my mouth. That guy’s nothing but a dog who plays when he wants to. And gets overpaid for it.
Kelly
It came from an unsecured source and no ones knows if it is really true.
But that point is moot it would cost the White Sox whatever they had left in the Minors to pull this off and Gordan Beckham would be the starting point.
I pretty much know for a fact they wont trade Beckham
oremlk
Don’t think the Astros will want Beckham. Daniel Hudson would be the demand, plus some prospects in low A. The White Sox farm system is so terrible that not getting Hudson would be a dealbreaker for the Astros.
aap212
The Astros would absolutely want Beckham. Much more than Hudson.
tp962
Sox have penty of talented players in the minors unlike the Ass-tros get your facts straight. Stefan Gartrell,Brent Morel,Donny Lucy,Carlos Torres,Gregory Infante,Ryan Braun,Jordan Danks,Tyler Flowers,Brandon Hynick,Charles Leesman,Jared Mitchell to name a few I think the sox will be just fine.
oremlk
Yeah, if I’m the Astros front office… I think I’ll pass. You enjoy those kids, though!
Soxman17
The sad thing about your reply to that comment is that tp692 took the time to rattle off a bout 15 players, and because you probably don’t know who half of them are, you decided to come back with that bland response.
oremlk
Actually, I know about all of them, at least in passing. I spend a lot of time following the minors. Most of them are having bad seasons. Tyler Flowers is moderately interesting, but his strikeout rate is very high, high enough to scare me off.
Jared Mitchell is the only one I’d want as more than a throw-in for an Oswalt trade, but he’s a long way from being MLB-ready, so I don’t see him as the centerpiece of a deal.
A deal centered around Hudson and Mitchell could work, if the Astros can’t find something better. But I’m hoping they can get more from a team with a better farm system.
damnitsderek
Oh my god, did you really just include Lucy and Braun in your list of “talented” White Sox prospects?
Michael Jordan was more of a prospect than those two.
Yankees420
“I pretty much know for a fact they wont trade Beckham ”
Does this mean that KW pretty much told you personally?
Burn
Oswalt will be in a a rotation preceeded by Santana and followed by Pelfrey
Josh
At this point I think we need another starter more than a bat. If I were Kenny I would definably try to get Oswalt as long as it dosent mean we have to give up Beckham. If we eat salary then a package built around Hudson should be fine.
foxtown
Oh, definably!
opwhitesoxfan
Go Kenny Go!!! Oswalt for the rest of this year and all of next season sounds like the final piece to the Playoff puzzle. Lets worry about 2012 later, lets make big runs in 2010 and 2011.
John
The white sox piss me off. They always want to trade for everyone and sign everyone yet they’re still mediocre. They’re the Redskins of MLB.
the_show
dumb comment, the White Sox have been playing great ball
Soxman17
I’d love to hear your argument behind this statement….and then watch even more people tear it apart.
1Tough9
I said this when Oswalt said he wouldn’t accept a trade and I’ll say it again. So, the White Sox are getting Oswalt then.
Soxman17
I honestly don’t see this being a good deal for the Sox. Pitching against the Scrubs, Pirates, Brewers, etc. and their 7-man lineups with 2 outs built in is not even close to the AL. I didn’t feel that way about Peavy, but I do about this guy. I keep thinking back to that one horrible inning he had in game 3 against the Sox in the 05 series…and that wasn’t exactly a potent lineup. No thanks.
Yankees420
Yes, completely disregard the almost 2000 IP during the regular season and use ONE IP during game 3 of the World Series to judge how talented of a pitcher Oswalt is/can be, that just makes so much sense.
Kelly
Lets see if the White Sox where to some how talk Roy Oswalt into going and the Astros pay like 7 million of Oswalts Salary and Add lets say Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Lyon
Just to sweeten the deal alittle and get alittle more inreturn I could see a return of:
Gordan Beckham, Daniel Hudson,Brandon Short and Tyler Flowers.
And Flowers would most likly be shipped out ASAP to try and get a Young Prospect maybe to the Mariners Maybe Dustin Ackley if the Astros threw in Chia Jen-Lo or something.
The Astros would have to be blown away by the White Sox to make them talk to Oswalt
oremlk
That would be good. Maybe Mitchell instead of Short?
Kevin Chambers
That is as far from what will happen as possible.
damnitsderek
Ackley isn’t going anywhere, I can tell you that right now.
And unless their names are Moore/Minaya/Sabean, no GM will trade for Lyon and his contract.
windycitywarrior
I think the real deal here is maybe make a less blockbuster but still valuable trade. Maybe Adam Laroche and either Dan Haren or Edwin Jackson. I say start with Tyler Flowers and Brent Morrel and throw in no more than four prospects. You might be able to get a third team involved and send Linebrink to a contender that needs bullpen depth. Im not a GM so Im not prepared to figure out the logistics.
Yankees420
So Dan Haren and Adam Laroche going to Chicago would be less of a blockbuster than just Roy Oswalt? How do you figure?
Brian Wojciechowski
As a Sox fan, I wish Peavy and Oswalt could team up together – – – IN HOUSTON. Peavy will not throw a pitch in another Sox game – ever.
dro03
Wrong
Joe
that’s a stupid trade scenario. the astros know that they can’t get beckham hudson flowers. they really only want a team to take him with his salary. The astros understand that there not going to get any top notch prospects for oswalt.
lug
True that! Why do people have so much trouble understanding this?

Have you ever read the Houston Papers?
If you have you would know what we are talking about.
The Paper has said that and I qoute”We would be willing to take some of Oswalts contract to get better players in return” and on another “We want 3 near ready MLB players for Oswalt”
Do your research….
HerbertAnchovy
I think if I was Oswalt I would rather be anywhere than Houston right now.
