The Royals 'like' Jeff Francoeur, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The Mets would like to trade Francoeur, and Royals GM Dayton Moore was in the Braves front office when the right-fielder made a name for himself in Atlanta, so the Mets and Royals could become trade partners. About $2MM remains on Francoeur's salary, and that's an obstacle for the Royals, according to Rosenthal.
The 26-year-old told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork that he wouldn't mind getting traded. Even if he stays in New York for the rest of the season, Francoeur may get a change of scenery this winter, since he's a non-tender candidate. Francoeur has hit .247/.297/.380 this year, though he did post an .836 OPS after the Mets traded for him in 2009.

Wow, raise your hand if you didn’t see this one coming. I was starting to think the Royals were getting better. They have a lot of big time prospects and it seems some of the weaker vets are on their way out at the deadline. Bringing in a guy like Franceour would just set them back.
Podsednik is actually a much better player than him right now, and that’s saying something. They need to go with Gordon, Pods, DeJesus (when healthy) in the outfield, and Kila at DH.
damnitsderek
Pretty soon, Dayton Moore will achieve his goal of piecing together the first ever lineup in which every hitter posts a sub .300 OBP.
Ferrariman
billy butler gave you a mean look.
damnitsderek
Hey now, Dayton will find a way to turn Butler into Francoeur or Jose Lopez soon enough.
renegade
…. why?
YaGottaBelieve11
Frenchie – Aviles swap? About all I can think of given salaries..
pdoubleu
Isn’t one Louis Castillo enough?
YaGottaBelieve11
How about one healthy one who can play 3 positions?
ColonelTom
Of course they do. Dayton Moore must have incriminating photos of David Glass stashed away, or he’d be long since unemployed.
Ryan Riddell
“Hey, it’s the Royals.”
“Yes, it’s ‘Like Like’!”
Good Wood
Pointless.
Robert Abare
Frenchy, F-Mart, Mejia and others for Greinke
Ferrariman
others..as in ike davis and flores?
Robert Abare
I believe Davis is an untouchable now and I was thinking of other pitchers but if the Mets add Flores then it should be just that: Frenchy, F-Mart, Mejia and Flores.
Ferrariman
is this before or after you guys send david wright :]
BWOzar
With a trade offer like that I’m guessing you’re a regular caller to WFAN in New York. That offer is categorically insane and even Dayton Moore would laugh it off. You want to talk seriously about Greinke – one of the most valuable assets in baseball considering his well under market value contract of 4 years, 38 mil (though it’s backloaded) – and you’re talking a price closer to Ike Davis, Jon Niese, Jenrry Meija AND one of Flores, Martinez or Thole. Even that might not be fair value because none of those players are even close to a sure thing – Davis is the best of the bunch but not a great fit for the Royals considering their roster composition.
Francouer, though he may have some value to KC (don’t ask me what it is), is a likely non-tender candidate this off season. That is not the sort of piece included in a deal for one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball.
aap212
Seriously. I’m a Mets fan. Please don’t take people like that to represent all of us. I know better.
bigpelflikesike123
i actually think a Frenchy Mejia Fmart and thole trade for grienke would be pretty good for both sides
aap212
Respectfully, you’re just wrong. Frenchy’s not a good regular baseball player and he’s had ample time to prove it. Martinez has upside, but he has a limited track record of actually hitting well, and has a huge track record of not taking the field due to injury. Thole could be a solid regular catcher, which is valuable, but not a major building block. Mejia has never shown he can keep his walk rates at a reasonable level above A-Ball and there are real questions about his repertoire, with many still thinking he’s destined for the bullpen.
The Royals have way more reasons to not trade Greinke than to trade him, and he’s so valuable that if he were actually on the market, many, many teams would have Godfather offers to top what you mentioned in a heartbeat.
And again, I say this as a Mets fan. Dayton Moore can have any nine of my fingers and toes thrown in for Greinke.
bigpelflikesike123
I thank you for disagreeing respectfully… but mejia is regarded as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, thole has been shining on the mlb level and fmart still at 21 has a lot of upside… throw in francouer who the royals like and i bet dayton moore would pounce. You could even throw in reuben tejeda
aap212
First of all, I assume that Moore likes Francoeur in the flier sense. At his age, performance, track record, and contract, he doesn’t actually add anything to a trade.
Second, you’re ignoring the existence of other teams. Your praise of the guys in the trade is fine, but other teams can and will top that trade. Zero chance the Mets can get Greinke without including Flores, and even then, if the Red Sox build a trade around Buccholz or the Rays make a big play, etc., the Mets will struggle mightily to make the best offer. And if teams are going to go all-in on anyone, it’s Greinke.

Better get him soon so he can block Gordon ! I feel sorry for Royals fans. They need a new GM in the worst way to handle all thier young talent. Moose and Hosmer look destined to crush the ball on the corners , just need some more pitch talent.
Tony
i can’t believe what i am seeing with my bare eyes
Garrett L
why would the royals do this they have gordon waiting for a chance to play everyday and dejesus wont be traded now since hes hurt through the deadline. theres no room for francoeur. and they would have to give up someone to get him and unless its guillen, ankiel, kendall its not worth it
damnitsderek
This is the baseball equivalent of Ricky Martin announcing he likes guys.
aap212
I’d rather date him than have him in right field for my favorite team. Talk about taking one for the team.
damnitsderek
I feel like dating Francoeur would be a disappointing process. He’d spend the whole time trying to get to first base with you, but tell everyone it’s not important how much he gets there because it’s not on the scoreboard for everyone to see.
venn177
What is it with the Royals and crappy Right Fielders?
melonis_rex
This was coming. We all knew this. Fire Dayton.
Brandon G
Anybody remember when the Braves could have pulled off a Francoeur/Zack Greinke trade? I remember it was at least rumored, so it’s neat seeing Francoeur going there like 4 years too late…

wow well that would have to be one of the worst trades ever if it went down…
Koby2
It was also rumored at that time that Butler would go to the Mariners for Betancourt. Those two trades together would have caused half of KC to commit suicide.
bj82
Anyone has anything on Greinke and possible being traded??
Danny Gambill
Not happening.
Ferrariman
yeah, their telling you to wake up.

Omar Minaya trading Jeff Francoeur to Dayton Moore would perfectly illustrate the old Kevin Nealon line: “You don’t have to swim faster than the shark; you just have to swim faster than the person you’re with.”
jcrabtree7
If I remember correctly, it was Dayton Moore that signed Frenchy to his first pro contract. Chalk another one up for the Land of Misfit Braves. Seriously, Kyle Davies, Brayan Pena, Anthony Lerew, Wilson Betemit, Kyle Farnsworth, Bruce Chen, Roman Colon, formerly Juan Cruz, Ned Yost….and that’s just this year! And of course, who can forget starting Tony Pena Jr at SS for 2 years, ouch!
aap212
Right, Dayton Moore built a career on finding a developing good players. The problem is the ones he could get his hands on in the new gig aren’t the ones anyone would want.
Oh, and the Land of Misfit Braves is a fantastic mental image. Thank you for that. I’m picturing Sid Bream missing an eye and Ryan Klesko walking in circles.
Sampsonite168
Sadly, I can see a Frenchy/Farnsworth trade happening, which would truly be a trade in which there are no winners.
withpower
Francouer and the Royals deserve each other.
Both of them just aren’t that good.
icedrake523
Only makes sense for the 2 worst GMs in baseball to talk about one of the worst players in baseball.
johnsilver
Hendry wants in on that conversation also, but yeah.. If Minaya can somehow dump frenchy off on Moore, it at least proves he has 1 more braincell than does Moore.
Jordan
Out of curiosity how is Dayton Moore one of the worse GM’s in baseball? Do you realize that he has given KC the No. 1 farm system in baseball (which was his No.1 goal)? Sure he has had some unsuccessful trades but who hasn’t? Actually his trades have been low risk- low reward trades. If you’re going to blame anybody you have to blame the owner David Glass for not giving DM enough resources to go get that blockbuster free agent!
Mark S
By #1 you mean in the bottom half of the league on all credible accounts? I didn’t realize today was opposite day.
Rebecca
Are you serious? Give me a farm system that is with out doubt better than KC’s? After that give me 13 more since you think that KC farm system is in the bottom half. Geez Mark, can you be any more stupid?
KC has tons of talent including Moustakas, Hosmer, Myers, Colon, Montgomery, Lamb, Dwyer, D. Robinson, C. Robinson, Crow, Sample, Melville, Ka’aihue, Coleman… should I continue? All of them would be top 5 prospects in almost every other farm system in the MLB.
damnitsderek
Sorry, but Clint Robinson and Ka’aihue would not be top five prospects in any farm system in the Majors. In fact, neither would Coleman. And in Colon’s case, you can’t really include a guy with virtually no professional experience in the top ranks of baseball prospects based on his collegiate statistics.
Kansas City has a respectable system, but you’re definitely over-valuing some players here.
Jordan
Okay smart guy how is Kansas City’s farm system in the “bottom half of the league”? Name 15 better farm systems, and how they are better than KC… Go.
Mark S
Ok, I didn’t see the updated midseason rankings, but regardless, I’d still take the Rangers, Rays, Indians, and Marlins farmsystem over the Royals. It doesn’t what I say though because you people are way too bullheaded to realize when you are overvaluing your own prospect. I understand guys like Hosmer, Moustakas, and Montgomery, but Rebecca is listing players who don’t even have a year of pro ball under their belt.
Jordan
I would say the 4 teams you listed and KC all are legit top 5 farm systems no matter what order you put them in. Kansas City probably has the No. 1 crop of pitching (especially LHP) of all farm systems. They also have a hell of a group of position players. As far as the post from Rebecca, she is spot on except for Coleman and Clint Robinson. The rest of them would all be top 5 prospects in just about every other system.
Mark S
By #1 you mean in the bottom half of the league on all credible accounts? I didn’t realize today was opposite day.
Ferrariman
WHY the f%^ don’t they just play Gordon???
bigpelflikesike123
Would the royals consider trading gordon to the mets?
carl huenefeldt
for a bucket of balls, probably
NYBravosFan10
A former washed up Brave go to the Royals? No way that has ever happened. I secretly want him back even as a bench player but no room at all for another corner outfielder even as backup. Braves need a center fielder.
Kevin
All of you have been played here. Did Rosenthal quote a source? All he is doing is trying to connect dots that might be there or might not. He has no clue if DM still wants Francouer, and neither do any of us.
Hans Johnson
they should try to trade franceour for grienke, greinke is a free agent next year and we all know he wont sign with the royals next year, he would be a great pickup for mets
Jordan
Greinke isn’t a free agent until after 2012 dumb ass.
jdub220
…And THAT is the biggest problem about his trade proposal?
It’s not the… y’know… offering of one of the worst outfielders in baseball for an ace? Okay then.
Jordan
Do you want my full opinion of that comment? That post that I replied to was probably the dumbest thing I have EVER read on this site. I was just starting when I mentioned his contract runs til 2012. If you want more just ask, I can go all day…
Jordan

supersteve1492
I would do Francoeur for Mike Aviles. It sounds as if he isn’t part of their future and he could play 2b for us, a .300 hitter and is from New York.
supersteve1492
Come on who are we kidding Royals aren’t trading Grenkie and the only guy the Mets could ge for Frenchy is Farnsworth or maybe aviles.
Greg
Aviles is a reasonable option at 2b/ss and can play 3b in a pinch. he’s a .300 hitter. francoeur is going to available for nothing this offseason. hell, i wouldn’t trade fransworth for him and i’ve been saying the royals should rid of him for ANYTHING they can get.
dbreer23
Instead of a RP, I think the Mets would want someone like Bannister back – they need SPs much more than a bullpen arm. If this happens, that’s my guess: Frenchy for Banny
ben m
aviles would be very nice return for Jeff and all his “tools”. Aviles always seems to play well in NY and obviously be an upgrade at 2b so “Captain” cora can start coaching….
budman3
Francouer for Farnsworth is as equal as it gets for both teams. The money is almost equal as is their future value to them(practically none). But the Royla sget a useful RF’er with Dejesus hurt and maybe still tradeable in August and the Mets get a set-up guy for their diminishing chances at a play-off run.
Greg
We must have different definitions of ‘useful’. The only useful piece in that trade is Farnsworth and it’s not likely he’ll stay that way long. Dayton Moore should be fired immediately if he gives up anything of value for Francouer.
Nick Migliore
Frenchy for Farnsworth. Please please please.
wwy
This is so sad. The Royals should simply not bother.
Joe
Clearly we have some insane mets fans on here! What makes you think Frenchy will get you anything of value back? Farnsworth has at least been worth something out of the pen. Frenchy has been terrible! He is not a good player. He will be signed to a minor league deal after this season. There is not one player on the Royals outside of Yuniesky and Kendall that I would trade for him. Aviles for Francouer?????? I want what you guys are smoking! Maybe you guys can pull off the Meche for Perez trade as well!!!!!!
Zebradune
Normally, Francoeur would get nothing of value back, but Dayton Moore isn’t a normal GM. Rather, he’s a complete and total moron who has a fetish for former Braves. It would not surprise me at all to get something of at least moderate value if we’re trading with Moore.
Zebradune

RBomb2844
I think the only reason why Moore would trade for Franceour would be for the defense. I do believe he is an upgrade to Mitch Maier but even still, they should just bring up Gordon and let him play in left and move Pods to right or center because Ankiel is back now. I don’t understand why we would even need another outfielder since we have Bloomquist as a super utility player anyway!?
joe
everyone needs to stop bashing francoeur. his batting numbers aren’t ideal but he’s an animal in the outfield. he has, undoubtedly, the best arm in the game, he is an above average defender, and leads the league in put outs. there aren’t many guys who can be game changers defensively like him. i know many teams don’t get guys just for defense anymore but just his presence in RF has caused 3B coaches to hold runners at 3rd or 2nd. like i said, his numbers aren’t ideal so i’m not here to speculate who the royals would trade but they aren’t as ugly as everyone is saying. he is not “the worst outfielder in baseball.” i also would like to point out his numbers after he was traded to the mets last year….maybe another change in scenery brings his numbers up like they did before?
joe
example of a worst outfielder…jason bay…the royals should take jason bay off the mets hands (francoeur has more HR, same average, and as i already stated….is a very good defender for a lot less money)
Rob Piersall
Trade Frenchy straight up for Kyle Farnsworth. works out for both parties considering the Royals want an outfielder now that David DeJesus is out for the rest of the year, and since the Mets want an 8th inning guy. Plus, if the Royals lose Frenchy to free agency at the end of the year, and he performs like he did when the Mets acquired him half way through the 2009 season, than it all works out. does anyone agree with me?
Joe
I’m not sure what half of this even means. The Royals can throw Guillen, Pods, Ankiel, Gordon, Maier and even Bloomquist out there. How is Franchy an upgrade over any of those players? The Mets some how walk away with a semi-useful player by trading the worst player on their roster? Lose him to free agency???? If he performs well it all works out? What does this mean? How does this help the Royals? Why would this be incentive for them to trade for him? How would they lose him to free agency? Who would put him on a major league roster at this point? Let alone out bid the Royals for his services?
Joe
Francoeur has a -3.9 uzr for the year, -2 the year before and -2.5 the year before that. His ops sits at a cool .677 for a right fielder. He may be in the top three least valuable position players in the game!!!!!!!! The Mets will not get Farnsworth with fip 3.26, era 2.41 and positive WAR for a below replacement level player. So Mets fans just stop, OK!!!! Frenchy is making a cool 5 mill to be horrible. If the Mets get any salary relief from the Royals then they will jump on it right away. Holy smokes people!
joe
farnsworth isnt very far fetched…look at past trades the royals have made….coco crisp for ramon ramirez….mike jacobs for leo nunez…clearly the royals like getting washed up bats for good bullpen pitchers….personally i see francoeur for farnsworth as a trade thats a lot better than nunez for jacobs
