Every team is hesitant to trade their best young players, but if you want to acquire a Cliff Lee or David DeJesus, you’re going to have to give up some valuable prospects. Last year we saw several top prospects traded at the deadline, including Brett Wallace, Aaron Poreda, Nick Hagadone, and Zach Stewart, which brings us to today’s question…
Who will be the best prospect traded by the 2010 trade deadline?

“…..if you want to acquire a Cliff Lee or David DeJesus, you’re going to have to give up some valuable prospects.”
There is something wrong with this statement. I could understand if Prince Fielder was inserted in there instead of David DeJesus. If I am a GM, there is no way on Earth I give up valuable prospects for a no power, no speed outfielder, especially with players like Corey Hart and Josh Willingham also being floated out there as trade candidates.

Couldn’t agree more.

David DeJesus has a .379 wOBA this season. That’s actually very, very good offensive production, just so you know.
ReverendBlack
Yeah, that’s nice. I’m sure it’ll make a big difference in KC all year – which is exactly where it’ll stay if they want to be all uppity about his prospect price.
oremlk
DeJesus is already set to be a type B free agent. He has a good chance to be a type A if he continues at his current pace. The Royals don’t have to trade him, they could just offer him arbitration and get a couple first round picks when he walks. If they don’t get good enough offers, I’m sure they’ll do just that.
BaseballFanatic0707
I’ll put my money against him maintaining a .362 BABIP.

They have an option on DeJesus for 6 million next year. Are you allowed to offer arbitration for a player you already have an optional contract on? Aren’t your choices to pick up the option or let him go free? I thought clubs gave optional contracts to AVOID arbitration, not to then turn around and offer it. I really am confused here on what the rules are.
DeJesus is a solid major league outfielder. The acquiring team gets to keep him for next year too. To me, that ups his value. A team that needs an outfielder beyond this year may very well give a nice piece or two to acquire DeJesus.
oremlk
Yes, you’re right, my mistake; I thought it was a player option.

Agreed. I’m confused by this notion that suddenly DeJesus is great.
jill
He’s not great, but he’s very good. He seems to be the best outfield option that may be available in a trade. You know, when Boston is giving regular time to Darnell McDonald, well, DeJesus might look really great to you.
I’m not dissing McDonald. He’s a fine role player, key word being “role.”

The Phillies have 3 great prospects in Phillipe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez, and Tyson Gillies they could offer up for Lee!

Suckers!

Martin Perez, probably.

I wish…
Go Ms!!

Martin Perez isn’t going anywhere.

They traded Michael Main for Bengie Molina.Bengie. Molina.I wouldn’t rule anything out at this point. The Rangers are clearly desperate to make additions and will need significant salary relief in addition to any player they acquire.

I fear that the best prospect given up will be one not listed: Jared Cosart, Phillies.
Best fastball in the minors.

…For Jose Lopez.. Lets get it done. š

My guess, Jenrry Mejia. Not too siked about it but I doubt the Mariners are going to deal Lee to the Rangers for anything less than ONE of Smoak, Perez OR Holland. I also see the Rangers not doing that.
Anyone else NOT an Ike Davis fanboy? I hear how great and fantastic he is all over the place. How untouchable he is, etc. I’ve watched the guy a bit and looked at his numbers. Dave Cameron was on 710 Seattle yesterday and put it best, IMO. He isn’t a fan and sees him as a young Lyle Overbay with 15-20 HR power.
I couldn’t agree more. He’s a good young first baseman but nothing to go batty over.
Smoak on the other hand….
jwredsox
Yeah that was really the report on Ike. His ceiling was decent but not great, but he was a great defender.

Yeah Smoak’s really lighting up Major league pitching with that .208 BA.

One of the Braves pitching prospects should be on the list. Now that Glaus has cooled off, it’s becoming obvious again that they need an impact bat. They’re still winning, but they’re having to fight tooth and nail for every game.
CrustyJuggler
They should put together a Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus and Jarrod Saltalamacchia package together for Prince Fielder.
Wait..

Argh!

Haha aww that trade makes me sad every time Feliz gets a save for my fantasy team. I think Andrus is exactly the player the Braves need right now. They could use more power, but the lack of a pure speed leadoff hitter really hurts the Braves ability to score runs.

Dominic Brown won’t be traded, and I doubt Montero will.
The top prospects with a real chance to be traded are Mejia and Ramos, and out of those two, Mejia is way better.
There are others though.
Will the Braves trade Minor, Viz, or Teahran? Will the Marlins trade Logan M?(Doubt it) Will the Rays trade Jennings (To the Royals plz)

I’m pretty sure that Teheran is untouchable. His father is a scout for the Braves and he turned down more money from the Yankees to sign with the Braves. As for Vizcaino he just partially tore a ligament in his arm so I’m sure that has decreased his trade value. My guess is that IF the Braves make a move Minor or Randall Delgado may be the trade bait. As a Braves fan I wouldn’t be opposed to losing those two if they could get a guy with a little power like Corey Hart.

Everyone who tries to right Dejesus down as a player is sub-par or average is ignorant. Dejesus is a very talent baseball player. He is great defensively, he did not have one error last year, and was not considered for a gold glove even though he deserved it, and its because he played for the royals, Greinke is the exception on this mainly because it was impossible to ignore what he did that year. So Dehesus is not a power, hitter, but he is one of the most clutch hitters in the game. Everyone one is aginst him because he plays Royals. Any team she be grateful to have a player like him. He goes out and gives it 100% every game and does not complain or whine about anything. A trade for Dejesus should not even be considered unless a top prospect is offered in return.
prophetjohn
whenever i consider what player i’d like my team to acquire, stuff like “giving it 100%” is way at the top of my list.
dejesus is solid. he’s a valuable player and i was pining for him last year to platoon with allen craig before the holliday contract. he’s averaged more than 3 WAR for 6 years straight (already at 2.6 on the year) and would be an upgrade on a lot of teams. mentioning him in the same breath as cliff lee is a little embarrassing, though. he should bring a good return, but nothing like lee will

Your use of errors and gold gloves to determine a player’s defensive abilities are going to get you eaten up on this site, FYI.
By the way, I hate, when people, put commas, in the wrong, places.
hendersonisgod
How can the use of errors and gold gloves no determine a player ability to play defense?
I guess I must be confused on what determines what makes a player good from a defensive stand point. It must be how well they run around the base paths.
You attempt at picking on what that person said was a failed one.
hendersonisgod
The person was just stating how they feel you don’t have to be so rude. Oh FYI im sure no one cares that you hate when people put commas in the wrong place. All you are doing is picking on someone for what they think.
