Some news from around the majors tonight, including a bit more on (you guessed it), Cliff Lee joining the Rangers…
- Newsday's David Lennon tweets that the Mariners/Mets negotiations for Lee fell through when Seattle wanted Ike Davis as part of the trade package.
- The Mariners were after James Loney or Chad Billingsley from the Dodgers in a possible Lee trade, reports Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. (Twitter link)
- Most teams feel the Royals will wait until closer to the trade deadline before thinking about a David DeJesus trade, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.
- Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports (via Twitter) that the Padres have heard some inquiries about right-handed prospect Keyvius Sampson, among other notable minor leaguers in the San Diego system.
- Jamie Samuelsen of the Detroit Free Press says the Tigers are virtually obligated to make a move at the trade deadline.
- Blogger El Lefty Malo thinks the Giants should make an offer on Stephen Drew. Not a bad idea, but it's hard to believe that San Francisco would give up Jonathan Sanchez for Drew, as E.L.M. proposes.
- Speaking of Drew, MLB.com's Jason Beck thinks that he's "a more realistic target" than Dan Haren in a potential Tigers/Diamondbacks trade.
- Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette discusses the Pirates' international scouting system.
- Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin says his team isn't in out-and-out "seller" mode, reports MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.
- Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com writes that the Cubs could be contenders again in the near future.
- And finally, Fangraphs' Matt Klaaseen pokes some fun at the newest members of the Miami Heat by predicting a familiar scenario for some of this winter's top free-agent outfielders.

Good thing the Dodgers werent willing to give up Loney or Billingsley for 2 months of Lee. They should go after Carmona of the Indians or Marcum of the Jays.
Zach
Seriously, I would have flipped if the Dodgers did that
baseball52
What did the Mets think? They were gonna get him for a bag of beans?
antor
Thats how they got Santana
baseball52
Ahh, touche.
kelvin84
Thats what the rangers basically traded for Lee SMoak is no where near ike davis league, smoak has not even hit over 8 hrs in his minor league career, asking for ike davis is like asking the braves for heyward. Davis in his first minor league year (2009) hit 20hrs and 70 something rbis. Mejia,Thole,Fmart and another prospect would of been better than what the M’s recieved,
BaseballFanatic0707
LOL. Justin Smoak is above and beyond better than Ike Davis. Ike Davis’s ceiling is no where near as high as Heyward’s or Smoak’s. Thanks for showing your naivety, sir.
baseball52
Ike Davis=High Floor
Smoak=High Ceiling
Heyward=High Everything
Cameron Nelson
I thought Tim Lincecum = High Everything. That’s what the cops said.
baseball52
Justin Smoak>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ike Davis
kelvin84
lol smoak is the same age as davis and like i pointed out before he hasnt hit more than 8 hrs in a season as per davis he hit 20 last yr in his full year, he already has 10hrs in the majors and is 2nd in rbis trailing heyward by like 6 rbis, sorry to burst your bubble smoak has not shown anything, im proving facts and you guys are just giving your opinion
BaseballFanatic0707
My replies have links, they will take time to show up, but don’t worry, since you are proving nothing (citing only numbers and not scouting reports), i think i’ve got you covered. In essence, they will show that Smoak is still learning, whereas Davis is more polished and may not show much more production than he is already, though he does have 30 HR potential, but not nearly the potential to hit .300, which is one of the edges Smoak has over Ike.
CitizenSnips
Maybe if he reaches his ceiling but you can’t deny that Ike has done a much better job adjusting to Major league pitching. The one thing I don’t know about Smoak is his defense. Ike seems to have a really good glove for first.
Devanand
Calm down Sparky, unlike Texas we don’t have another viable 1B that could match the output Davis can produce. Who would you recommend playing 1B if we traded Davis?
icedrake523
Exactly. Davis is their starting 1B. They’re not giving him up for 2 months of Lee. If they had a window for an extension, then it’s a different story.
baseball52
They ask for Davis, why not go, “Here’s Jenry Mejia! He’s good too!” instead of just making the talks go mum.
Devanand
Yeah like Seattle is stupid enough to take Mejia FRESH off a Minor League DL stinit.
baseball52
Unless I’m mistaken, I believe that was to stretch him out to start.
Devanand
Kind Sir, you misread my post, Mejia just got off a Minor League DISABLED LIST stint with a Posterior Cuff Strain suffered while stratching out to be a starter in Double A.
baseball52
I thought it might have been a rehab assignment to begin with. My mistake.
Msforever
Yes, they did. Josh Thole anybody?
sdsuphilip
Im not trading Sampson unless I get a star I would guess his trade value will only rise
jwkc
Do most teams “fill” the Royals will wait until closer to the trade deadline, or do they feel the Royals will wait?
verlander
Well, if Jason Beck says so . . .
Michael Wahl
“Most teams fill the Royals”. Yes they do. The Royals “suck”
johnsilver
Good luck signing Lee to a LT deal. After the Yanks got blind sided 1 time for lee, the Steinbrenner’s won’t let it happen again. Pure vanity if nothing else. Like a child without a new toy.
Cyyoung
Probably Yanks will go on a vengence, sign Lee, Crawford, and Werth. Oh wait…normal off-season, sorry.
Martin
what would it take to get Stephen Drew to the Giants? maybe Brandon Crawford or Nick Noonan and Roger Kieschnick and Clayton Tanner or something like that?
leftymalo
In case you read Mark’s summary without clicking through to my post, I should clarify. I first said I think the Giants might be better served going after a right-handed bat, but if they insist on a LH bat, I threw Drew’s name out there and asked if J. Sanchez was a fair swap. If not, who would be? I appreciate the shout-out and the link, but I don’t appreciate being misquoted.
