A few more links to browse, on the night of Buster Posey's first big-league home run….
- Nationals scouting director Kris Kline tells MASN's Ben Goessling that the club is optimistic about finalizing a deal with Bryce Harper earlier in the summer than they signed Stephen Strasburg last season.
- Tony La Russa suggests that the Cardinals could pursue starting pitching, writes Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. We've heard this a couple times since both Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse hit the disabled list.
- With this year's draft barely in the books, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo looks ahead to ten top prospects that could be drafted in 2011.
- Gregg Zaun confirmed today that he will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. At the time of Zaun's injury, we looked at the Brewers' backstop options.
- Dave Cameron of U.S.S. Mariner (via Twitter) has trouble believing the Phillies would have chosen the Mariners' package for Cliff Lee over a Yankees' offer headed by Jesus Montero, as Ken Rosenthal reported earlier today.
- Cameron also predicts that Ian Snell will be designated for assignment after a disastrous outing tonight in Texas (Twitter link).

I wonder what it would take from the cardinals to get cliff lee.

not enough in the farm system… it would take something like
craig, sanchez, and someone else maybe lynn. They can’t afford to trade someone like lynn or sanchez when the dark days of Holliday and Pujols taking 50M of the roster, the farm is going to be essential to their success.

buehrle maybe? he wants to pitch for the cardinals (his hometown team) before he retires
CodyG
buehrle’s contract would extend another year and add 1M more to his salary meaning the cardinals would be paying him ~7M this year and 30M for ’11 and ’12 combined. I don’t want the cardinals to spend that much on him when they need that money for pujols…

The Yankees never offered Jesus, and have no reason to offer him now.
Zack23
How do you know? They offered him straight up for Doc, if they were willing to do that then Cashman would have offered him straight up for Lee too.
But there is no reason to offer him now for a few months of Lee + 100m contract
VoteForPrado
I know the Yankees typically buy whoever they want, but I wasn’t aware that they were able to get Jesus.
Sorry, had to.

Roy Halladay is a far better pitcher than Cliff Lee. And that was a straight up one for one trade.
Cliff Lee, it’s not worth it. Keep the prospects and wait until the offseason. The Yanks ability to repeat does not hinge on having Cliff Lee. It hinges on sorting out the bullpen.

I wonder if Snell will complain about the Seattle fans not cheering for him whenever he didn’t pitch well. What a worthless bum.

Yankees would have never traded us Montero…not to mention Montero is moving to 1st where we have some guy named Ryan Howard. Makes no sense.
I’ve read numerous reports that the only other team The Phillies were in contact with was Texas. That’s it.
jon
Montero is not moving to first. Wherever you heard that, someone lied to you. If anything, he might move to the outfield.
darkdonnie
Haha ok. Considering I’ve never seen one article suggesting a move to the OF, where I’ve read multiple reports of him trying 1B.

Ken Rosenthal is a joke. He makes stuff up daily just to say something.
I cant imagine the Yankees giving up top prospects for Cliff Lee only to have to sign him to a $100m+ deal at the end of the season when they wouldnt trade top prospects for Johan Santana only a few years ago. Yankees have shown that under Brian Cashmans full control that they greatly value their developed players and they just dont trade them.

I think the Cardinals would have to take on some salary if they wanted to pick up someone(I’m guessing at most 5-6M) Goold has suggested someone like Bannister would meet the fit but I think someone meeting the mold of Millwood would work as well. Heck I would take Ground Baller Puppy kicker Brad Thompson who would be pretty cheap…
I know some fans who want Buehrle, that’d be great but I doubt something like that would happen considering the value and contract Buehrle has.
A few other Candidate I would suggest are
*Sheets
*Lowe or Kawakami if the Braves decide that a rotation of Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, and who ever isn’t traded is enough to push them to the playoffs. (i doubt this happens though)

Is there any chance Selig would let them announce a deal as big as Harper’s will inevitably be before the deadline?
vtadave
Why not? They can announce it whenever they want can’t they?
aap212
They COULD, technically, but the commissioner’s office has strongly discouraged it. Name a well above slot deal that’s been *officially* announced more than a day or two before the deadline in the past couple of years. And Harper is going to be way above slot.

Also, I’d love to see Dave Duncan take a shot at Snell.
