The Twins agreed to terms with lefty Ron Mahay on a minor league deal, according to a team press release. Mahay, 38, finished the '09 season with the Twins after being released by the Royals.
Aside from four homers allowed, Mahay did a nice job against lefties in 25.6 innings last year: 7.01 K/9, 1.75 BB/9. The Red Sox, Phillies, and Mets also expressed interest in the southpaw reliever this winter.

I like it. Costs nothing and not committing a roster spot. He did prove useful at times last year.

Agreed. Unlike past years, it seems that our premium this year is roster spots and not necessarily cash. Love the minor league deal.

Could this be an indication that they’re keeping the door open to Mijares as closer, and Mahay is potentially their lefty-specialist option?

I would think it’s more just insurance, as Duensing and Perkins are both having atrocious springs.

Ladies and gentlemen, your other lefty option out of the ‘pen.
smootsmack
Hopefully this means all the starters we asked to pitch out of the pen last year will be going back down to AAA.

Also, Condrey has been bad this spring – this might be insurance for him.

I like it, if he’s ever on the roster, then hopefully we can use Mijares for more than just 1 guy at a time.

What harm can it do…?

I, for some reason, saw this coming. And like the rest of you, I like it. I think he did well in the very limited time. Plus, it may only be spring training but I hate Condrey so far. I’m kind of having Ayala flashbacks.
dinger1504
Agreed! Ayala was terrible, Condrey so far hasnt done much, hopefully he can turn it around or he will be this years vertern that the Twins release: Ayala, Hernadez, or pick a 3rd Basemen of the last 3 years.
Right now you would think that Mijares would be a good bet to either A) close B) Take over the 8th inning role of Rausch or Guerrier
