When the Rangers voided the contract of Khalil Greene last week, it appeared as if the club would look within their system for a replacement. Indeed, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan was told by Texas officials that there was a "100 percent probability" that this would be the case (via Twitter).
A week later, however, Sullivan reports that the team is changing its tune. Greene provided both infield depth and a right-handed corner infield bat, and now the Rangers "are re-assessing the situation and early confidence that the roles could be filled from within may be eroding." The team hopes that prospect Max Ramirez or former Angel Matt Brown can handle the corner infield job, but several options exist outside the Rangers organization for the utility infield spot. Sulllivan noted the Dodgers have some extra infielders in camp and listed a few other specific names as options…
- Julio Lugo. He may be the odd man out in St. Louis given the Cardinals' recent signing of Felipe Lopez. Sullivan noted the irony of Lugo possibly again being acquired to replace Greene, given that St. Louis did the same thing last summer. Sullivan also said Lugo "is somebody [the Rangers] have talked about internally."
- Augie Ojeda. We heard last winter that Texas had some interest in the Diamondbacks infielder.
- Ramon Vazquez. Sullivan said "the Pirates may be willing to talk about" dealing the former Ranger.

Jed Lowrie for Max Ramirez

Lugo for Derek Holland, Scott Feldman, or Matt Harrison please???? Ok, I’ll stop dreaming now.
Seriously though, if the cards can get any form of pitching out of Lugo, whether that be bullpen arm, low level prospect, or over the hill starter…I don’t see why they shouldn’t trade him.

Wilmer font seems good. He is in the Texas pipeline but really overlooked because of the mass of tslent he has to compete with
Ferrariman
Tslent = talent
InTheKZone
I’d love to get Font in return but I don’t count on that happening even if they do trade him (Lugo) to Texas. Ross is another guy I like.
What is more likely is just a low-ceiling guy.
Ferrariman
If they were wiling to give max ramirez for mike Lowell AND pay 3mil, I think font for lugo for free sounds reasonable.

Do you rally see a Lugo trade happening, especially since we’re paying him $400k and the Sox are picking up the other $9 million?
Ferrariman
Why not? He will hardly get playing time with lopez and TLR said they intend to bring tyler greene up this year. Plus he takes up room on the 25man roster. ThAt’s a roster spot we could use to take a more versatile person like Mather, stavinoha, Allen craig or go after a set up man.

Dodger’s should trade Carrol for some pitching, we don’t need him
Taskmaster75
The sign and trade from a different team. That’s new :D.
bleedDODGERblue
Don’t understand exactly what you mean by that but you gotta admit they kinda jumped the gun when signing him and now in retrospect it was a horrible move
Taskmaster75
Well, signing a guy from a different team and then trading him off to a different team is kind of new, but it wasn’t the greatest deal. They could have had Lopez, who would have been fantastic.

You can’t trade a free agent signee till midseason.

Seriously? Did not know this, thank you

I thought you could if the player were to consent to the deal? I’m not sure though…

What’s interesting is the name not mentioned in the article, Mike Lowell. My guess is that given the current FA market, the Rangers are no longer interested in the $3M salary they’d agreed to before the thumb surgery. I’d be happy (if he’s happy) for Mikey to stay on with the Sox as a role player for 2010. As for Lowrie, I don’t think the organization is ready to part with him before he gets another 1/2 season of AAA in… just to be sure he’s not the next 3B or SS for the team.

Uggh, Mark my sad words. Matt Brown will explode for Texas and the Angels will look stupid for giving up without even playing him. It gives me a stomachache.

Can’t imagine the Cardinals will trade Lugo anytime soon. The uncertainty of Ryan and Freese seems it’s in their best interest to keep a stockpile of middle infielders. Lugo would also be desperately needed as the backup SS or 3B should Lopez get injured or have to take over for Schumaker at 2nd. And even if everything works out gloriously for the Cardinals, LaRussa is the most creative mananger in baseball. He will find Lugo playing time so long as he deserves it.

Def trade ramon vazquez to them for next to nothing it opens up the possibility for the team to keep delwyn young who is a very valuable pinch hitter if nothing else and reaffirms the neil walker superutility availability I’d trade vazquez for the best possible prospect available even it is myself who couldn’t touch the diamond lol

trade vazquez for anyone they are willing to give, allows neil walker the superutility position and keeps dyoung on the 25 man to serve as a pinch hitter

The Reds have Cairo, Miles, and Janish all looking to compete for the utility role for the Reds…one of them could be shipped to the Rangers

To bad none of them can hit.

Nothing about that is ironic.
