The Athletics acquired reliever Edwar Ramirez from the Rangers for infielder Gregorio Petit, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The Rangers confirmed the news in a press release, adding that recent waiver claim Hernan Iribarren cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A.
The Rangers had acquired Ramirez from the Yankees on March 9th for cash considerations; the Yanks had designated him for assignment to make room for Chan Ho Park. Ramirez, 29 in a few days, whiffed 10.6 per nine in his 98.3 career big league innings with the Yankees. Walks and home runs were a problem, though not nearly as much in recent Triple A stints. Heading into the '08 season, Baseball America praised Ramirez's "top-of-the-scale changeup" but was unimpressed with the rest of his offerings.
Petit was designated for assignment by the A's on February 1st to make room for waiver claim Steve Tolleson, and the infielder cleared waivers. Petit, 25, hit .244/.292/.336 in Triple A last year while playing second base, shortstop, and third base. Before the '06 season, Baseball America described Petit as a "plus defender at shortstop."

Ok this is confusing.

I guess the Rangers got their backup infielder now, huh?

as upsetting it is to see him go, I am glad. He may get a real chance with the Rangers

Good stuff. The A’s have some really really good young pitching.

I will never forget Edwar giving up a game-tying grand slam to Teixeira in a Yankees/Angels game seconds after I concluded an argument that Edwar’s awesome changeup would make him a great asset to the Yankees’ pen. From then I decided that Edwar is terrible. His lack of any other quality pitch besides his changeup is his undoing.

I was at that game! Ha I remember telling my friend the exact same thing. I was on a trip to NYC for the summer before we went away to college, talking up Edwar and saying he’d be a really good reliever. Whoops…

Being an A’s fan, I hate, hate, hate this trade. Say Rosales is filling in for the injured Mark Ellis, which we all know is bound to happen, and then Pennington goes down, then what? Besides, if they like Ramirez, why didn’t they get him when the Yanks designated him for assignment? Again, I hate this trade! Leads me to believe that someone in the pen is hurt, read-out for the year, and we just don’t know it yet.
Any A’s fan willing to share their two cents?

Easy, they move Rosales to SS and call up either Eric Sogard or Eric Patterson to fill 2B.

Actually Patterson doesn’t have any options left! He will be placed on waivers soon. I think Tolleson is ahead of Patterson on the depth chart right now.
