2:36pm: Troy Renck of The Denver Post says that the Giants are the favorite to land Wellemeyer, followed by the Rockies.
2:01pm: Todd Wellemeyer told the Team 1380 in St. Louis that he could sign with the Mets, Rockies or Giants. Tim McKernan of the Team tweets that Wellemeyer hasn't talked to the Cardinals and doesn't expect to return to St. Louis (Hat Tip: Bart Hubbuch).
MLBTR reported earlier this week that the Phillies and D'Backs expressed interest in Wellemeyer, along with the Rockies. The 31-year-old pitched to a 5.89 ERA in 122.1 innings last year, with sub-par rate stats: 5.7 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9.

Thank God!
Infield Fly
Cards fan? . Lucky you!
Infield Fly
Wellemeyer? OK, NOW I’m scared!
Infield Fly
If the Mets do land him this is the rotation I foresee:
1. Johan
2. #4 starter
3. #4 starter
4. #5 starter
5. #5 starter
Yeah….that’ll work.
joshamaral
Chances he’s good without Dave Duncan?
Infield Fly
I’d say zero — or less. I’m going with “less.”
rayking
last year, he was horrible WITH Dave Duncan. It can only go downhill from there, and his fluky 2008 will be the distant past. I can’t imagine him getting anything more than a minor league deal.
Infield Fly
Yes he WAS!
The thing I’m worried about is: sure he’d get a minor league deal, but as the Mets have pretty much nothing else in the house, what’s to stop him from taking a spot in the rotation?
mochajoe
I would imagine it would be on a minor league deal
JohnLucarelli
We’re not going to sign him to play baseball are we?
KeithLawSucksInStl
If by baseball you mean throwing bullpen sessions, then yes.
Guest 1182
Three teams with hitters parks are in on him?
Fredschickenshack
mets isnt a hitters park at all lol …. his best bet is coming to ny if he wants to get some pitching time with the questions in the rotation..if he goes to san fran with tim, cain zito sanchez..gonna be alot harder for him.
dodgers_suck
san francisco is a hitters park? have you been there? i agree with rayking in that i’d be really surprised if he got more than a minor league contract. but he’s like a lot of guys, he walks too many hitters. if he was pitching in san francisco his HR’s would be lower than his 19 that he gave up last year and his era would drop. if he shows more control he could be a decent #4 or #5 starter. especially in san francisco.
Guest 1183
Colorado, Philly, and Arizona?
Fredschickenshack
what does philly and arizona have to do with this ?….. if you didnt know the giants are from san fran… the mets are from new york.. not philly or arizona.
Suzysman
Did you read the thing?
“MLBTR reported earlier this week that the Phillies and D’Backs expressed interest in Wellemeyer”
dodgers_suck
it says they were mentioned earlier this week but the article is about the giants, rockies and mets. with the giants leading over the rockies. did you not read that?
Guest 1184
Because favorite means definite?
dodgers_suck
it says that the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Rockies expressed interest at various points. doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re showing interest now. the dodgers showed interest in pineiro as well. just because a team shows interest in somebody doesn’t mean that they’re in any talks to sign him. but, most likely when the article says that the giants are the favorite to land wellemeyer i would assume he’s most like going to sign with them.
Guest 1185
Who was the favorite to sign Kevin Gregg?
Better yet.
“2:36pm: Troy Renck of The Denver Post says that the Giants are the favorite to land Wellemeyer, followed by the Rockies.”
What exactly does that mean?
rockiesfan_303
it also does not necessarily mean that they are not interested still, or could re-emerge. I would feel better with Welle coming into ARZ on a minor league deal because I am worried about Buckner at the 5 spot, and if nothing else, its someone who could push Buckner to prove himself in camp.
As far as the Rockies I see this as a long reliever contender along with Tim Redding to maybe have an outside shot at long relief, but likely pitching in the Springs getting ready in case Francis or Cook go down again, or if De La Rosa and Hammel can’t repeat strong 2009 seasons. The Rockies could definetely use insurance, but I hope they add Beimel to the pen instead of relying on Flores for that LH out of the pen.
As for the Mets, it’s something. I doubt he will get anything more than a minor league deal. Likely to the Giants to push Bumgarner to improve himself during camp.
riotmute
I want to support Wellemeyer as he seems like a good character but his comments after horrible starts really started to get to me “I thought my stuff was better than the results” “A couple bad pitches and it got out of control” “Sometimes your stuff just doesn’t work”
Infield Fly
I know that attitude. The Mets had their fill of it back when Duaner SĆ”nchez was in the house. Definitely don’t need any reruns.
KeithLawSucksInStl
Or, “My last start was rough, but after throwing in the bullpen I feel great”… puh-leeze
icedrake523
So I take it the Mets have no interest in making the team better anymore?
Fredschickenshack
i think by not signing him would make the team better… this guy will only hurt whatever team he signs with hahhaahaaaa
wright_is_my_boy
“the Giants are the favorite to land Wellemeyer, followed by the Rockies.”
best news of the offseason for met fans
Eddie Schmid
Heh. “Favorite.”
bharsh
Jeez, another bottom feeder for the Giants… Great
MorrisParkMetfan
The Mets are a joke I am a die hard Met fan and this is the first time I am not excited for baseball season to begin I feel bad for Johan and Beltran the most they are not getting younger and who knows when they will win a ring
Infield Fly
You know, it’s funny, as competitive as it is to score opening day tickets, I somehow manage to pull it off every year. This year I ain’t tryin’ so hard.
Fredschickenshack
We’ll never win with the omar or the wilpons.. they need to sell the team to someone who knows baseball.. omars just an idiot.. one of the worst gms ive ever seen, pull off some of the most rediculous trades in history hes a joke…. honestly alot of people may disagree with me but im all for trading santana and some guys at the end of the season and getting some prospects before they get to old.. bc were clearly never going to win with this bunch they just dont mesh well together and its sad.
Infield Fly
I hear you, but to me? Get the Wilpons to sell – to an owner with some vision – and with time the rest starts falling into place.
If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather not contemplate life without Johan. There’s few enough reasons to watch games as it is. I just can’t stand to lose another!
Guest 1186
The Wilpons will not sell that Franchise anytime soon. That Stadium is going to bring in tons of cash.
Infield Fly
“That Stadium is going to bring in tons of cash.”
Actually I wonder about that. I spoke to a staff member last season who said that there’s some concern about that because even fans with ticket plans had stopped attending. Correspondingly, concessions sales (where they make the real money) were way down. So, assuming that’s true, and even though it’ll be a brand new season, if the quality of play does not significantly improve, not a lot of money’s going to be pouring in for the foreseeable future.
Holy_Roman_Emperor
So what could the Mets rotation be:
-Johan “I’m not really an ace anymore” Santana
-Mike “I’m just as tall but not as good as Wainwright or Carpenter” Pelfrey
-Oliver “Look Ma, I kept my ERA under 10” Perez
-Fernando “I only last 3 innings” Nieve
-Todd “I have no trapezus muscles and I’m legally going to change my last name to ‘woefulmeyer,'” Wellemeyer
-John “I actually wish I was back in Baltimore” Maine
– Josh “I eat innings more painfully than anyone not named Claudio Vargas” Fogg
– Nelson “I get figueroaed out by the 2nd inning” Figueroa
– Jon “at least my name is not Adam Loewen” Niese
– Alay “I am from Cuba and once I threw a shutout” Soler
Fredschickenshack
haha i liked figueroas name ….. but santana, not really an ace… lol alright thats dumb, i dont think anyone in baseball would say anything bad about santana.
Infield Fly
Actually for Mike Pelfrey it should be: “I balk for a living.”
Suzysman
Just think. Johan wanted out of Minnesota because he felt they were not dedicated to winning as they surrounded him with question marks and scrubs.
Two years and 1 game short of two Twins playoff appearances later, Santana finds himself surrounded by that motley crew.
CardinalsOwn
I feel bad for whoever gets wellemeyer.
Thomas Wolff
I’m really not excited to see Wellemeyer looking to go to the Giants, we have young pitchers in our organization who could fill the 5th spot.
MLBTR though, should be really excited, great shout out to you guys in the Denver Post!
Matt Cool
Wellemyer would be another nice reclamation project for the Marlins.
Holy_Roman_Emperor
There would have to be something worth reclaiming………………
ShadowDude
Yeah, and Era of 6, Lets go get him!!
33yankeesfan33
what are the mets doing they obviously need pitching and they’ve done nothing. That’s why met fans hate the yankees. Cuz the yankees get what they need right away. The mets however are a joke with omar, their screwed again this year. A pitiful offseason on Omar’s part.
